“Cute and great location, but don't expect four star amenities.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 23, 2012

A small family operation, with four ensuite rooms on the lower level and more rooms with shared bath on the upper level, this lodging provides quite an authentic hutong experience. You're right in the famous hutong neighborhood 南锣鼓巷 and it's a very walkable area compared to most of sprawling Beijing. Each morning we awoke and meandered down the alleys to the nearby cafes and had brunch while watching locals walk by. One thing about the neighborhood is that it has become quite popular with the teens, but maybe that's just the way gentrification proceeds. The hosts were cordial though not that warm. They were willing to launder our clothes and drive us to the airport (it's quite hard to hail cabs in Beijing) for a fee. The bath in the room is a shower head that hangs above the toilet, not a separate stall.

Hutongs are old buildings and usually toilet facilities are communal in a neighborhood facility. There are definitely times of the day where the odor of sewerage pervades the alley ways, and sometimes we would be hit by it as soon as we stepped outside the hotel gate. The first day there was a smell in a room we had, but the hosts thankfully moved us to one without a smell. Just things to be prepared for should you go.

The Purple Courtyard is a fine establishment. Not at all fancy, but reasonably comfortable accommodations near the truly charming Nanluoguxiang. An absolutely delightful hutang experience! The price was okay, not great, but wow! Location, location, location!!

A lot of people want the authentic hutong experience, and this is a good place to get it. Just adjust your expectations. This is a very simple, no frills, place. It was relatively clean, and the staff was somewhat helpful...although when I asked for a map, she charged me for a map clearly marked "Free," but I just found that amusing. Free wi-fi was very useful. Our room had a shared bathroom and we didn't have to wait for other people very often. The shower is adequate and clean but needs an update. Now, the location. This was not an easy place to find, and it's quite far from the nearest subway station. If you are coming from the airport, you should take the Airport Express, then negotiate a good price with a pedicab driver. (Make sure you have him write down the price, so you don't get ripped off). Taxis cannot go into the hutongs, so the pedicab is the only way, unless you walk from Andingmen station, but that's 20-30 minutes away. The best thing about this hotel/hostel is that it's 2 minutes walking from Great Leap Brewing! I highly recommend this place to hang out and have some craft beer (a rarity in China) on a hot summer evening in a quiet courtyard. Being a short walk from Great Leap is a big reason to recommend the Purple Courtyard.

i chose a traditional accommodation that's very close (about 3-5 minute walk) to historical nanluoguxiang. purple courtyard staff are very helpful and friendly, and can communicate in basic english. i stayed with my 2 daughters ages 20 & 14 on the 2nd floor at the corner room facing the entrance and i think it's the best room because we have a window (other rooms on the 2nd floor don't seem to have any window). 2 big beds occupied most of the room so we had little space for our luggage. the room also had a small cabinet, desk, TV. the bathroom has a western toilet but no divider for the shower (with hot water). although they can serve breakfast, we chose to have our meals at nanluoguxiang. they also offer pick-up from and to the airport at reasonable rates.

If you want to experience life in traditional Beijing, this place is probably the best choice. Very convenient locatoin (if you can manage with city map). It's close to famous Nanluoguxiang with its handicraft shops, bars and cafes, so it won't be problem to decide how to spend your evening :) Stuff is very friendly and warm-hearted, they helped us to visit Beijing Opera and even made a home-party with chinese dumplings and home-made ginseng wine. Next time in Beijing we want to come here again:)

If you want to stay in a hutong in Beijing then you don't have many options. Purple Courtyard is one of them - however its far to expensive for what it is. I paid an average $US60 per night for what is essentially a backpacker's hostel.

The location is ok and staff are friendly but its not super comfortable and definitely not value for money in my opinion. Be warned its not near a metro line (A new station is opening nearby in the future) and no bus routes in Beijing are in English. Taxis also loathe driving into the hutong area.

Room Tip: Avoid getting the room near the reception area - it has no windows and is really uncomfortable.

Stayed here for a week at the end of June and early days of July. Firstly, I would not call his place a hotel, it's more of a hostel really. And at nearly €50 a night an expensive one at that. It is a family run business with a small number of rooms. They have very little English so it was an ordeal to ask for anything really. The place offers no facilities really for the money. There is inroom wifi but was very slow. I needed to print off a flight confirmation which they could not do for me.
The rooms to me appeared dingy and were very badly lit. It was impossible to read in the room that I had as half the lamps had no bulbs in them. Their idea of daily room service was nothing more than throwing the duvet back over the bed. This wasnt even done at the weekend. There was no replenishment of towels or toilet paper, you had to ask for these items.
Overall, the only positive aspects about this place are; constant hot water and good air conditioning. Its location is excellent just two minutes walk to Nan Luo Gu Xiang.
However, when you arrive at Beijing airport don't expect your taxi driver to be able to drop you directly at this property as it is located on streets that are too narrow for cars. Instead get dropped at the end of Nan Luo Gu Xiang and ring the hotel and ask to be met there and walked to the hotel.
