“Fabulous getaway close to Beijing”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 25, 2010

We recently returned from a six day trip to the Beijing area, and the three days we spent at the Brickyard exploring the Great Wall and the surrounding villages were by far the highlight. The hotel is lovely- the rooms are beautifully designed with natural materials, comfortable beds, rain showers and full wall windows with views of the Great Wall. It is not possible to darken the room, but the hotel provides eyemasks. There is a beautiful hike that leads from the village directly to Tower 21 of the great wall and countryside, and other smaller hikes through the surrounding countryside.
Gregory, who hosted us during our stay, was helpful and attentive.
The owner is building a pool and plans to run Tai Chi workshops in the near future.
This is the ideal place to get a bit of nature one hour from the bustle of Beijing. There is no better place to stay if you want to stay overnight and explore the Great Wall and small countryside villages. Highly recommended!!!

“Lovely, unique spot with a view of the Great Wall”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 11, 2010

Finally, there is now a nice place to stay overnight while experiencing the spectacular Great Wall of China. This place is a renovated kiln factory, and rooms 1-1 to 1-4 have special balconies, but all rooms have huge windows directly overlooking the Great Wall in the distance. It's an unforgettable scene, and this boutique hotel is by far the best option for anyone traveling to Mutianyu for an overnight stay.

The room is first rate and nicely designed, and the lobby is also nice and quiet in this boutique hotel. Service is very personal and competent. The nearby Schoolhouse restaurant has a nice, Western-style menu.

The only small problem was the lack of adequate curtains to block all light, as the floor-to-ceiling windows are not yet fully covered. And one thing they have no control over is the daily 7am loudspeaker that plays all over every village in China, every day for the last 60 years.

“Pleasant retreat with a timeless view of the Great Wall”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 13, 2010

We simply wanted to be out of Beijing and didn't bother to plan a trip, so the weekend package with transportation was perfect for us.

The locale is wonderful which resides in a small rural village. We didn't rush out to hike but staying in the Brickyard having our afternoon coffee when arrived. A short walk on the main street before dinner in the School house around 6PM while the sunlight still bright. Food in the School house and Xiao Lu Mien was great. Back to the Brickyard, simply relaxed and gazing the stars at night, the big dipper was easy to find in the sky. We ventured to let the terrace door open for the cool air for sleep without turning on the air conditioning.

The staff were warm and hospitable. We asked for transportation the next day to visit a nearby ancient temple. We had a late check-out after taking showers from the day walk.

Enjoyed strolling in the alleys in the village. The booklet published by the same group operated the School house is a good read to learn the villiagers' life.

The room was smaller than my expectation but clean. Few things be noted. The door and its lock of the room was troublesome. The toilet without door needs good venting or a curtain for those not used to the style.

Hope to visit soon again, either stay in the brickyard or the countryside house.

“Lovely stay in peaceful and beautiful village”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 17, 2010

We stayed one night as a weekend getaway from Beijing to a trip the Great Wall with some visiting overseas friends.
Hotel is brand new, clean and nice. Simply but tastefully decorated. Bed was very comfortable, which is not always the case in China.
The village in which the hotel is located in is very peaceful and beautiful. There is a lovely view of the Mutianyu Great Wall on the mountain ridge in the distance.

I can highly recommend this hotel when visiting the Great Wall.

Mutianyu is a great place to visit the Great Wall. Easily accessible by cable car. The landscape and the section of the wall is very beautiful. Safe for children.
