“Retreat to the Great Wall”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 16, 2014

Beijing is wonderful city and full of many things to do, but sometimes one just needs to take a break from city life. The Brickyard Eco Retreat at Mutianyu Great Wall offered just that during the start of the Chinese New Year for me and my husband. We stayed in the deluxe queen room, which looked out to the Great Wall. Upon arrival, we helped ourselves to snacks, fruit, and coffee/tea that's available in the main dining hall all day. Check in was easy and the staff were very friendly and answered questions about hikes and restaurants in the area. The room was bright, clean, and open. The bed is comfortable for those who prefer a firmer mattress, and there were multiple heaters that made the room actually warmer than we needed but could easily be adjusted. In the afternoon there was happy hour, where one could have snacks and wine. The breakfasts were mostly of the Western variety, but also had some Asian dishes (zhou). The food is locally grown and meals were well-made, although be prepared to pay more for this quality and care. We used the comfortable TV room to watch a movie (Management might check since some boxes lacked the DVD.). We also used the spa services and both had a Chinese massage. The spa was very peaceful, clean, and the massage was very relaxing. Finally, since we like to be active, we hiked up to the secret tower from the Brickyard and walked all the way up and back, about 2 hours in total. Apparently, you can hire a car to take you to the base before climbing the path to the tower, but I highly recommend just walking it yourself, if you can. In conclusion, we highly recommend the Brickyard at Mutianyu and look forward to going back one day.

Room Tip: The restroom in the deluxe queen is in open space, so be comfortable about sharing private space. T...

Thank you so much for your kind review of our little hotel. As the designer and one of the owners I appreciate your helpful comments very much. We'll for sure get the DVD library cleared of titles where the disk itself has gone missing. Wishing you wonderful adventures and hope your travels bring you back again to Mutianyu Great Wall... I had a friend visiting Beijing for the first time. She wanted to see the Great Wall so I thought it would be s different experience if we stayed at the Brickyard and walked to the Wild part of The Wall a doable walk from the School House. We took the shuttle van from the Brickyard has lunch at the School House and were on our way. We had The Wall to ourselves and had a great outing. We arrived back to the Brickyard in time for Happy Hour and were served snacks and drinks. We enjoyed reading in front of the fireplace. The food was good and the room was beautiful and toasty warm. We took advantage of the shuttle service from the Kepinski Hotel to the Brickyard for a reasonable additional fee. Staff were friendly, welcoming and helpful. This was a real treat!

Whether you are a first time traveler to Beijing or a seasoned Beijing resident, a trip to the Great Wall at Mutianyu and a night stay at the Brickyard (or any of the Schoolhouse rental houses) is a true treat and retreat. We have been here many times, by ourselves and with friends, and have stayed at the rental houses and were the first time guests at the Brickyard, the Chairman Suite. Each time something amazes (always pleasantly) us: the beautiful architect of the houses and the Brickyard, the famed view of the Great Wall in the distance, the artfully displaced pieces in the houses/suites and in the glass shop, and the delicious dishes served at the Schoolhouse. Chats with the friendly staff and with the Schoolhouse partners by the fireplace in the Brickyard or in the terrace of the Schoolyard are the added delight.

We stayed in a deluxe queen room for one night and spent the next half day on the Great Wall before returning to Beijing. Our room was clean, bright and minimalist, containing the necessities and nothing more. Initially we wondered to ourselves whether we had overpaid given how simple (albeit comfortable) accommodations were, but all doubts dissipated as time went on. The shuttle service was great - it took us where we needed to go (- dinner at the Schoolhouse, the Great Wall entrance, back to the Brickyard) on our schedule. Breakfast was excellent - anything from the menu and as much or as little as we wanted. The staff were international and interesting, friendly and competent. And the many small touches (complimentary cookies and beverages, a piano, fireplace, books) made the common space inviting and encouraged interaction among guests. And, oh yeah, waking up to a view of the Great Wall - how cool is that? In the end, we were delighted with our choice to incorporate a stay at the Brickyard into our Great Wall experience and would totally recommend it.

We spent three nights over Christmas at the Heart's Desire farmhouse. It was wonderfully relaxing, warm and very atmospheric. The wood and stone of the farmhouse made for a very pleasing setting. You could see the Great Wall from the farmhouse and it was inconspicuously situated within a functioning village. There are some terrific walks both to the Great Wall itself and surrounding villages. We were looking forward to experiencing a heated kang but were told on arrival that it did not work, however we enjoyed sitting by the fireplace instead. We thoroughly recommend the Schoolhouse/Brickyard experience and will certainly go again ourselves.

When our son announced plans to visit us in China for Christmas and asked to visit the Great Wall, the Brickyard looked to be a good location. It exceeded expectations! The rooms are simple, but stylish, warm , clean, have great bathrooms and views directly onto the wall. An evening massage (extra -but worth it) dinner at the sister restaurant The Schoolhouse and a super breakfast followed by a walk on the Great Wall on Christmas Day. Truly memorable.

Having now stayed at the Brickyard two times, I can absolutely say it is a little 'gem'. Simply in the buildings exterior and some of the interior there is a refreshing attention to detail, and many things to appreciate. It seems like a magnificent mix of east and west, unique, and made by someone who cares. The service and friendliness is also excellent, so really a little oasis. Can be a bit tricky to find if you drive yourself, and there is no public transport to this location as far as I know. The view to the great wall is splendid. Walking there and back takes some effort, though. The local Chinese restaurant in the village looks a bit stark, but serves excellent food.
