“Amazing place from which to visit the great wall”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 9, 2013 via mobile

Very friendly, family run place with amazing views of the great wall! We loved staying here with our two small kids and using it as a basis from which to explore the surroundings. It was nice to allow a little extra time because on the first two days we couldn't see a thing, then when the fog finally cleared we realised how close the wall actually was! Our two children enjoyed the log fire and playing in the gardens

Brickyard is very well located for enjoying the Great Wall at Matianyu. The shuttle to the Great Wall is extremely useful. The staffs are friendly. The room is clean and comfortable but the design is nothing to write home about. What I love the most about the place is the cozy fireplace and ultra comfy lounge chairs in the lobby area. The tv room is also nice especially at night where there is nothing to do around the area. What it lacks is the special touch and care that warrant the prices they charge, which are 5 stars rates. First off, we had to wait for our two pre-booked transfers for an hour for one of them and two hours for the other. When the first driver arrived he couldn't communicate with us in English so we had to ask a Chinese gentleman at the airport to translate for us. We were told that the cars were late because one of the car broke down. Although the hotel staffs apologised for the delay when we complained, they seemed surprise themselves that the cars were late to pick us up and did not offer an explanation why two cars were late to pick us up when one car broke down. Secondly, there was no safety deposit box (or may be there was but I could not find it) where I could put my valuables. I believe this to be a necessity as I had my possessions stolen during my stay at other hotels in the past. Thirdly, the bathroom has no shower curtain so other areas of the bathroom could get wet after a shower (oh, the flimsy shower rod somehow broke during my shower and spray the water everywhere). I was extremely worried that my father would slip if he goes to the bathroom at night. Fourthy, despite paying a hefty prices for our stay there was no amenities other than cheap local hand wash gel in plastic bottles, shower gel and shampoo available in the room. So, if you choose to stay here be prepared to bring your own lotion, shower cap etc. Fifthly, the prices of food at the hotel is extremely expensive particularly for the quality you get. For example, fried rice with egg and a few pieces of shredded duck costs approx 17 USD. I am so sorry I decided to eat at the hotel instead as I found out later that the food is much better at the School House. Lastly, please beware that the hotel has only one therapist at the spa so be sure to book very well in advance. We didn't know this so we didn't book before we arrived so we had difficulty scheduling 4 people in for a massage consecutively.

Dear jj388, This is Jim Spear, one of the partners and owners of the Brickyard. We met during your spa package visit and I was sorry to learn then about the service issues you raised and took steps to address them reasonably and fairly. It's clear from your follow up comments on Trip Advisor that this did not satisfy you and that the Brickyard and the experience we delivered simply did not meet your expectations and taste. Once again, I apologize sincerely, and wish you happy travels. Jim Spear

We got to know brickyard from a friend and had a wonderful weekends there.
It is a family owned B&B but charge your 5-star hotel price in nearly everything. But for what is worth
--the staff does privide 5-start hotel level service, from clearning lady to key staff at the reception, they are all very nice and helpful
--the room does have specical design and has fab view of the greatwall
--the whole facility is in general of very high quality, clean and comfortable, therefore i highly recommand it to those who travel with elders or kids.
--they provide free coffee/tea/cookies in the lobby whole day, which make it smells like home, there is even a fireplace! which make kids very exciting
--they also privide free mini bus to the great wall--this is important in peak time when it is difficult to park

The only drawback is the food, which is not at 5-star hotel level but has its price. Next time, i will try some local option nearby.

Deep in my heart, i really admire the owners, what they accomplished is beyond the words, they created such a wonderful resort near the great wall, which provide unqiue expereince for all the travellers. Clearly their business also supports local communitiy. i do hope i could do the same thing one day!

P.S. We will definately come back, with more friends next time

Came across this amazing place purely by accident - Brickyard, The School House and related properties are very low key, and don't go out of the way to advertise themselves (And they have no reason to). And I'm so glad I discover this gem by accident. The property is amazing -- very low key, it's not 'overly designed', it has an amazing fire place at it's hang out area, and yes, the view from my room is fabulous. This is as close to sleeping under the stars as it can get in polluted Beijing/China.

The service is superb. The staff are very friendly, very helpful, and would go out of the way to ensure your stay is comfortable. I was greeted by Gina, the amazing "Homo Multitasker". She listens to your request with a smile even when her mobile phone is ringing non-stop -- and proceed to do that it takes to satisfy your request. She deserves a badge (And possibly much more) for that.

I would recommend this place to anyone planning a visit to Mutianyu. My only regret is that I only stayed there for one night. I should have stayed there for 2 nights and really enjoy the village setting etc. Highly recommended.

I can't begin to say how much we enjoyed our stay at the Brickyard!!!!!! The facilities are exquisite, staff couldn't be more welcoming and the setting ... well breath taking!

This spot was worth the trip to China alone.

Generally a good experience. We wanted something a bit different and this place offers a great chance to stay near the wall in relaxing surroundings.
The rooms are fab and the ceiling to floor windows offer impressive views. The weather was quite chilly whilst we were there and the room was lovely and warm. There is a lovely log fire with relaxing chairs in the communal area, we didn't ever feel cold which we were grateful for!

We got some good advice from the friendly staff on where to go to see the wall however where we would like to see the Brickyard improve is to be more forthcoming with this advice. It was quite 'busy' when we checked in and we didn't really get much information e.g what time breakfast was, how we can arrange to use the shuttle bus and where the various walks around the area are. When we asked for this information we got help none the less.

Breakfast was excellent however in general the restaurant food was limited and quite overpriced. 42rmb for a mug of hot chocolate which is really just powder and milk.

Overall we are glad we stayed there but feel that a few things need to be polished up to be 'value for money'

Dear millsythailand, This is Jim Spear, a partner in the Brickyard and I am responding to your review on behalf of our team. We're happy to know you were toasty and warm and enjoyed the views in your room. I am so sorry you felt there were areas we should polish up in order to provide what you feel would be value for money at our small-scale private resort at the Great Wall. I am glad that you obtained good and accurate information when you asked though we can certainly coach the team to try to be a bit more proactive when they sense guests are expecting a more intrusive style of service. Our little cafe on site offers breakfast (which I am delighed you felt was excellent) as well as a limited variety of comfort foods prepared from scratch to order from quality ingredients exclusively to our guests. Our hot chocolate, which contains whole milk, water, sugar, chocolate powder, Belgian dark chocolate, cocoa powder, and heavy cream, is made to order. We do encourage our guests to enjoy our complimentary beverage service with freshly ground Yunnan coffee, premium teas, soft drinks, and homemade cookies daily from 11:00 to 23:00. We also happily recommend local restaurants with a variety of cuisines and price points to guests who prefer a more extensive menu than we can offer on premise. We actually provide complimentary rides to and from those other restaurants in the interest of offering as much choice as possible to our guests. Thank you so much for your feedback via Trip Advisor and I wish you happy travels, Jim Spear

Having been to various sections of the Great Wall we wanted to experience something different so decided to stay close by for the evening. The Mutianyu section of the Great Wall is very nice for photos but personally we prefer some of the less touristy sections of the Wall, however the Brickyard was simply amazing!

From wherever we were in our room we could see the Great Wall through the large seemingly double-height windows. We took a look at the Spa and the jacuzzi, which both looked very tempting but decided to save these for next time. Our room was very nicely appointed, very clean and it felt truly 5 star. Great heating (it was the end of winter) and a fireplace with wood to keep it burning plus a very nice rain shower in the bathroom.

The staff were polite, accommodating and spoke more than enough English. The breakfast and lunch that we had at the Brickyard were very nice, simple food simply well done. We also dined at the sister restaurant, the School House, for lunch on the day we arrived and this was also very good. Being part of the one organisation meant we were transferred by minivan from the School House to the Brickyard by their own driver.

We will be back, and perhaps with a group of friends as it would be a fun place to enjoy some dinner and drinks together while loooking up the mountain to the Great Wall of China.
