We booked this hotel because of its location which is walking distance to all these interesting hutongs in Dongzhimen district and because of its artsy and local vibe. The staff speak little English but with patience, you will be able to communicate with them. Fangjia hutong is quite famous but some taxi drivers are not familiar with the area and would not go through this narrow hutong, but its okay because the place is still generally residential and so its safe even at night.
As a former resident of Beijing, this area in Dongzhimen was our favorite since its walking distance to Gulou Street, Nanluoguxiang, Yonghegong, Houhai lakes, etc. But because its in a hutong and not fronting a street, the hotel is really quiet at night-allowing you a good night's rest. The solid wood furniture plus antique touches on the common areas give this hotel an artsy yet authentic local feel. The young staff were very friendly, accommodating and easy-going which made it feel more homely and more like a b&b rather than a hotel.
Of course, the all-glass ensuite is still a problem for us..but I ignored this issue and gave it an excellent review because it met our trendy yet authentic local vibe and were very much happy with our stay there.
