“Wow the service was brilliant”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 26, 2013

Spent chinese new year in Beijing before returning home on the QM2. We upgraded to Fairmont Gold Club and was worth the extra cost Rooms large and good location for business and daily trips to the airport. The. Club lounge was comfortable and great service .Staff professional and informative. Everyone spoke English The Restaurant downstairs ,had the best Peking (Beijing Roast Duck) I had eaten . If you don't like crowds or pollution, go toBeijing in Chinese New Year. Was like a ghost town We Loved it. Shops closed but all the attractions are opened. Thank you to all the staff for excellent service and friendliness. I recommend this hotel and is consistent with the Fairmont standard

Room Tip: Extra cost for Fairmont Gold room worth The cost

Dear Aussyjonsey,

Thank you so much for your kind review! The Fairmont Gold rooms are beautiful and we're so glad you enjoyed yourself at the Gold Lounge. We've often been told that the Peking Duck at Lunar 8 is the best in Beijing. We're glad you enjoyed your dining experience there. We also have an award winning steakhouse on the 2nd floor called The Cut. We hope you'll have the chance to try it upon your next visit. Hope to see you soon!

3 of 5 stars Reviewed April 23, 2013

My family and I spent 3 nights here last week. I don't understand why it is rated so highly. First, I had booked connecting rooms two months in advance, and the day before our arrival I received an email from reservations saying there were no connecting rooms available unless I wanted to pay more for a suite. I wrote back that if they overbooked the hotel, they should upgrade us for free. Eventually we sorted it out and they gave us connecting rooms but both had kings (rather than one with twins) and they did upgrade one of the rooms. After that hiccup, the initial impressions were that the hotel interior was dated and the elevator was unbelievably slow. Yes, the rooms were loaded with high-tech lighting and TVs and Wi-Fi, but it was not intuitive to use the light switches or open the drapes/blinds or even use the toilet (it was one of those ultra-modern, car wash kind). Beds were comfortable and the rooms were well-appointed. On our last day I noticed a bunch of dust bunnies in the hallway though. We dined at Lunar 8 one night which had fantastic mojitos and dumplings but service was slow. Breakfasts we ate in the 20th floor Gold lounge (we paid extra to join when we checked in but it was obviously mostly for business travelers and probably not worth it) where the service was fabulous, eggs made to order, and the espresso was pretty good. The concierges helped arrange acrobatics tickets, restaurant reservations, transportation, and an English-speaking guide for a city tour. Prices were way steeper than if we'd booked directly, but that's to be expected. One night we requested in advance a taxi at 5:45pm but still couldn't get one by 6:15pm. More of a reflection of the city than the hotel? A concierge ended up bidding up the price online (20CNY above normal fare) in order to get a taxi for us. The concierges and front desk staff were friendly but seemed a bit harried. I appreciated their suggestion that we just book a driver to go to the Great Wall as opposed to a guide in addition; we saved some money there and had a great time exploring on our own (plus the driver helped us buy tickets and pointed us in the right direction). We did not use the spa or fitness facilities; they are supposedly excellent. A final note: the location, in the CBD, was neither attractive nor super convenient (far from landmarks, 20-25 min taxi ride to Houhai and the hutongs, for example). I don't understand why this hotel has so many great reviews.

My wife and I stayed 8 days in Fairmont and we love the hotel. The hotel is in the quiet side of Beijing and the beauty of it is the hotel is only a 5 minute walk to the subway and 15 minute walk to the silk market. We stayed in the Gold junior suite and the room was just fantastic. We had breakfast every morning in the Gold club and we loved it. Service was great and so was the selection offered during breakfast. We were glad that the hotel was not in the busy part of Beijing, you will really appreciate it after fighting the crowd in the tourist attractions, markets and not forgetting the subways. If you love your personal space I strongly advised you not to use the subway even when it is not the peak hour. Mind you the subway is the easier mode of transportation considering the horrendous traffic jam you have to put up with. Well....back to Fairmont, this is why I am writing the review. The gym facilities offered in the hotel is one of the best with the staff always at hand to ensure that the equipment is always cleaned after every use. They even ensure that there is always a bottle of water and sweat towel on every machine. Pool was also nice and clean with fresh towels readily available. We dined at the Lunar 8 restaurant to try the famous Peking duck and we were not disappointed. Food was just awesome and you could not fault the service. If you are also looking for great steak, you must give the restaurant The Cut a go. I strongly suggest that you make time to try the awesome juicy steak offered at the restaurant. Overall the service and quality of food offered at the Fairmont restaurants is second to none. Only hiccup was one of the staff at the concierge which was not too helpful but this was sorted out very quickly after a chat with the very helpful and friendly front desk director by the name of Joe. My wife and I are so glad to have picked the Fairmont hotel for our 8 day stay in Beijing and we will come back again for sure. If you are looking for a great hotel in Beijing you must seriously consider the Fairmont!!

Room Tip: Go for the Gold club rooms.

Would recommend for business trips. I upgraded to the club room and was very impressed – VERY spacious and modern with walk in wardrobes, TV area and HUGE bathroom with lots of gadgets. The staff were very helpful and there are a couple of nice relaxing bars / restaurants onsite for a quick beer after work. All you need for a one or two night business stay…

All is perfect in this hotel except for the elevators!

They have just 3 and sometimes you need to wait 15 minutes to go to your room!!!

Unbelivable but true.

We stayed as a 50 people group in the hotel and this was the biggest problem

Dear Maksit38,

Thank you so much for taking the time to share your feedback with us. I’m very happy to hear that your overall experience was a positive one. I do apologize for the delays you experienced with our elevators. When large groups stay with us and all the elevators are being used at the same time, delays are expected. On a positive note, these delays are highly uncommon for our guests as we rarely have the pleasure to welcome such large groups to our hotel. Thank you again for post and we look forward to welcoming you back soon.

Great hotel>>>>Travelled with a 6 month old infant and i have absolutely no complaints ( and that's rare)... Stayed in the sunset suite on the gold floor and it was nice, spacious and clean.
oh, just remembered two complains.
1. At the fab steakhouse on the 2nd floor, the waiter actually said to me " Please tell your baby to stop making noise because of the other diners(she wasn't crying, she was just playing)". Okay..My baby is 6months old! i gave him a mouth full and asked him to tell her himself considering the fact that he seemed well versed in baby language. He later apologized....lol.
2. I ordered a hot chocolate and cookies at about midnight and the hot chocolate came in an open mug!!! No cover, no cling film over it....The chocolate cookies were divine though.

Dear MrsMoh,

Thank you for your kind words and for your review. I am happy to hear that your overall experience was a positive one. I also recall having the opportunity to meet you and your beautiful child in the lobby. I do apologize for the experience you encountered in The Cut on the 2nd floor. Your feedback has been well noted and escalated to our senior management for internal follow up. Regarding your experience with the hot chocolate and cookies with in room dining, our standard is to ensure all items are well covered upon delivery. It is then the responsibility of our In Room Dining Attendant to remove all covers/cling film quickly once the food is delivered. I truly apologize if this did not happen during your stay but this is certainly a consistenly practice of ours. Thank you again and we hope to welcome you and your family in the near future.

We stayed for five nights in a king room on the club level. The room was very large with an excellent bed and a very nice bathroom; strangely, the bathroom had a large window (with blinds) that looked over the bed. The room had a large desk with free w-fi and electrical outlets that accepted electrical devices from all over the world without adapters. Food and service in the Club Lounge were both excellent - a large selection of both Chinese and Western food was availale for breakfast; hors d'oeurves, cheese, wine, beer, and cocktails were available at happy hour; desserts were availabe after dinner. Check-in and check-out were effortless, and the concierge was very helpful in booking some train tickets for us. The restaurant in the lower level of the hotel was just OK -- many better option in the city. This is a first choice hotel for Beijing!
