“Best location, economical price with a touch of nostalgia”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 23, 2012

Am surprise to find this hotel listed in Tripadvisor. I sourced out this hotel during my backpack trip to Beijing and never regret staying here. Preserved from the ancient structure with a touch of modern fittings (glass windows, aircon etc) and the exterior outlook is exactly what you see in those drama serials. Rooms are adequately spacious for two, and the furniture are made like those ancient china. There is this big space in the middle of the courtyard where one can mingle around with other guests and chit chat. Location is ultimately superb. 10mins walk to Tiananmen Square or East gate of Forbidden City. Wangfujing food street is about 20mins walk away in distance as well. Only minus point is this hotel is hidden in one of the alleys, so might have a hard time locating it, especially in the night. Look out for the sign at the main road. Apart from that, for the price paid for, this hotel is definitely worthwhile.

Room Tip: Almost all the rooms are non-identical. Hence, all rooms almost different layout. Best it to try to...

Steps to Forbidden palace, night market and Tiananmen square. I liked the courtyard style, it was quiet but doors/walls were thin. There was internet terminal and staff was very helpful. They helped me with the Great Wall tour and even make tea for you. Oner

This is a nice little hutong located 5 mins walk away from Forbidden City, 8 mins walk from Tiananmen Square, 2 streets away from Wangfujing Street, 4 bus stops (Bus 120 & 20 @ Tiananmen East train station, RMB 1 per pax/way) away from Qianmen Old Street, and 6 stops (same bus number) away from Temple of Heaven. Perfect location for any first time tourists to Beijing.

It takes 30 mins drive from Beijing Int'l Airport (without traffic jam), cab fare about RMB150.
Just tell the driver that it is along the Street called 'Nan-Chi-Zi' that is right beside Forbidden City will do. Then look out for Deng-long-ku Alley while along Nan-Chi-Zi, then a 30 secs walk from the entrance of Deng-Long-Ku, you will see 'Best Year' hotel.

I managed to have hot water throughout my 5-days stay in this hotel, but it was turning summer so the weather wasn't cold to start off with. Rooms on the ground level are not sound-proof but lead straight out to the quaint little courtyard that is so classic hutong living. Rooms on the second level are quieter but guests will have to lug their luggage up 2 short flight of stairs.

In the B&B, there are a total of
- 6 Family Rooms (various beds' combination that can accommodate up to 3 persons, just have to email the hotel and let them know your preferred configuration)
- 4 Single Rooms (1 King-bed that can accommodate up to 2 persons)
- 3 Twin Rooms (2 Super Single beds for up to 2 persons)

Rooms are on a small side and recommended only if you are not going to spend long day hours in the room, which shouldn't be the case if you are tourists.Beds are comfortable mattresses, not thin cushions. All quilts have beautiful Chinese embroidery design.

I agree that toilets on the first level do need a little refreshment. While you do get a little sewage stench from the sink and toilet bowl, it did not affect us much during our stay. It will also be nice if the management can provide disposable bedroom slippers, since it can be rather cold walking on the tiled flooring, especially during winter.

Can't commend on breakfast, which costs RMB 30 per person since we did not take breakfast during our stay. I do recommend walking out (just across the road) for breakfast if you are fine with eating local street fares - noodles, fried sesame cakes and dumplings. A good selection that that is relatively cheap too - About RMB 10 per person will suffice. The street stall owners speak a little English, enough to communicate with non-mandarin speaking tourists.

Room Tip: The second level rooms are prettier in design and pricier too. A ground-level corner Single room h...

Only hot shower early in the morning and around 7 at night, I got to the hotel at midnight after 22 hrs flight, only cold shower. They used solar hot water system.

room is not sound proof at all, the large glass door and a big gap between door, only a curtain behind the door, room is clean, bed is comfortable and firm, the boy and the girl service staffs including the cleaning lady are very friendly.

airport pick up for flight late at night is a plus, good location.

the local tourists are very noisy, they were up at 4 in the morning in large group, spoke loudly at the enclosed courtyard, and they don't stop the noise until mid night.

The hotel is getting very popular among the local Chinese, they don't care about other people who need their sleep. If you have jet net, and feeling sleepy after 7pm and woke up very early in the morning, this hotel is not for you, I stayed there for a week, it is impossible to sleep. Everything else is great, but not the sleep quality, the hotel locates at the quiet street, no traffic noise, all man made noise. By the way this is my third stay. The hotel owner is so nice I really don't like to say anything negative. If you are a good sleeper, and will be able to go to sleep at any situation, this is a perfect hotel for you, for sensitive person like me, it is no no.

Room Tip: all rooms are the same, with good bed and chinese style

Our pick up at the airport, organized by the hotel, was waiting for us on arrival and drove to the hotel in record time. A great start. The appearance of the hotel was just as we expected from our research on Tripadvisor. We enjoyed our stay of 8 nights here very much. The location is excellent. Easy walking distance to Tiananmin Square, Forbidden City, Jinshan Park and Wangfujing Street. There is also easy acces to the subway which is very easy to use and only costs 2 yuan per trip.
The pleasant atmosphere in the courtyard where guests seem to collect and swap stories of their days was delightful. It was very easy to meet people from different parts of the world as well as chinese tourists.
The young folk managing the hotel were inexperienced but wanted to learn and improve the the quality of there guests stay.
Breakfast was boring as it was the same every day.
Although the hotel is advertised as having coffee/tea making facilities in the rooms there was only a kettle. No cups, coffee or tea. The rooms had a small fridge but they were all useless.
I know I have put a few negative comments here but I would have no hesitation in recommending a stay at this hotel, it was a wonderful experience with very friendly staff.

Room Tip: We chose an upstairs room so we would not be disturbed by any noise from the courtyard.

I really wish I could give this hotel 5 out of 5. It is in a perfect location, charming setting, the staff are lovely and the courtyard is quite social - a great place to meet up with other travelers and chat. The room I was in had two beds. One looked a little hard but the one I slept in was wonderfully comfortable. They also make decent coffee. My only reservation was the water. The couple across the courtyard said that their shower was only luke warm, which isn't too bad. I think I had the room closest to the water heater though. The shower would go from so scaldingly hot that you couldn't stand in it to freezing cold with nothing in between. Didn't matter what you did with the temperature setting, it just sort of went hot and cold all on its own. I really do like good showers, but still enjoyed my stay here. The location simply can't be beat.

I booked and paid for a room here through Agoda. The place was easy enough for the taxi to find. As I arrived a large Chinese family pulled up behind me and followed through into the hotel. I was told to "rest" while the family went running around the hotel. It all got a bit Fawlty Towers as they offered me tea, though the pot was empty and not switched on and there was no water. I asked for water, which seemed a real hassle. Alarm bells started ringing and eventually I was told I could not stay- the family had decided to stay.
I was taken on a ten minute walk to an absolute dive and was told it was the same value. I became quite angry and said I had paid much, much more than what the smelly, dirty Wancheng Huafu International Hotel was worth. I was eventually sent to the Najing Great Hotel which had no character, but was at least clean.
The worst part was that in the morning I was asked to pay for my stay. More phone calls ensued before this was sorted out.
Note, I have since discovered they have played this game before after reading a review of the Nanjing Great Hotel.

Room Tip: Just ask to be taken directly to the Nanjing Great Hotel if they try to stuff you around.
