“Wonderful Setting,Food,Service & Atomospher!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 25, 2013

A great choice for one of the 14 nights in China. My girlfriend's daughter who is studying in Beijing took us here for a taste of China, we had read through the reviews on TA, we were not disappointed. Check it out for a great Chinese( yunnanese) meal. Fresh &quality ingredients!

“Serious Food”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 2, 2013

This restaurant -- set in a hutong off a small alley -- is a thoughtful take on Yunnanese cookery. It's the kind of place that wants to be taken seriously for its food. It's not glitzy: the service, while attentive, isn't polished, the rooms are comfortable but not posh, and in general it has the vibe of a place run by and for foodies.

For us, all of that was a big plus. We ate in several bigger and obviously well-known "destination" restaurants in Beijing, but none with better food. The set menu is a great advantage if you don't know Yunnan cooking well, as a balance of dishes is critical in most all of Chinese regional cooking, and that comes automatically with the set menu. My regret is that I failed to convey clearly that we wanted the maximum set: each dish was a gem, and with the food as good as it was, we could have kept going for a while longer.

“The charm of hutong, great food , relaxing environment”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 27, 2013

It's a great place! You don't have to spend time checking the menu and worries about what food to order because there isn't any food menu in this restaurant ! The serve set menu base on the daily availability. The supplies are transported fresh from Yunnan daily to ensure the freshness. The set menu is good for 4-5 adults, they charge by head count. A variety of food will be served: pork, fish, chicken, different type of vegetables, eggs etc and all are yummy!
The courtyard is excellent , winter will be too cold to sit outside but they do have few rooms.
Remember to call before heading to the restaurant as this courtyard is rather small and busy. A new outlet is opened close by but I prefer this old and authentic one.

“Great food, great atmosphere, great people”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 25, 2013

So glad we did not follow our initial instinct to leave before we even sat down. This was our favorite meal during our 5 days in Beijing. They serve a set menu, but ask if you have any preferences or dislikes up front. Every dish they brought out was fantastic. The service was friendly and attentive. The courtyard area was lovely. From reading the other reviews, your experience may be effected by the menu they choose to serve that night, as well as the chef who is preparing it. We had a great experience and would highly recommend it to everyone traveling to Beijing.

“We loved this place, the people, and the food”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 23, 2013

Everything we had was wonderful. It's a set menu, which is nice because then you get to experience food you wouldn't necessarily order, and it leaves more time for conversation. Yes, as one person pointed out, there are some bones, but this is pretty standard for almost any restaurant in China. It's a different culture after all... That's what's so great about going to a good restaurant that allows one to experience an alternative menu. And it was a good chance for me to practice my Mandarin, and for the wonderful staff to practice their English. I like a restaurant with interesting people who have personalities and are not just trained to be passionless servers. We had very nice conversations with the people working at the restaurant. One goes to a different country to experience the country (I would hope) and not to just get Western-style food pretending to be Chinese. We had multiple dishes, and we were quite full when we were done. We drank good beer. It was really lovely and unique. I appreciate Trip Advisor and the people who comment on it because I have been very happy with the places that I have found using this website. By reading the reviews, one can tell if one thinks similarly to the reviewer. The rating is helpful, but the actual written reviews I find the most useful.
