“Good location, great example of Chinese dignitary's home”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 19, 2014

We stayed at Courtyard 7 for 4 nights in October 2013. It is on Qiangulouyuan Hutong, just off Nanluoguxiang which is the oldest streets in Beijing. The neighborhood is very active, with many shops and restaurants, but we were never bothered with noise. Courtyard 7 was the home of a Minister of the Qing Dynasty, with 16 rooms facing a large courtyard, Typical of this style home, a little open air corridor separates the large courtyard from a dining room and the entrance to the street. The property was renovated about 5 years ago to be a hotel and has western-style fixtures. The rooms were OK - the staff kept the bathroom relatively clean but the tile floor looked like it may not have been mopped in the last several weeks. The room was poorly lit, although it did not bother us much because we could read on our iPad. Wifi worked well all over the property. Only Chinese language channels were available on the TV. The food in the restaurant/dining room was good; not fine dining but much better than KFC or McDonalds and safer than the hot pot shops on the street.

13 days and nights of exactly what I wanted. 5-star glitz is certainly available in Beijing, but I sought something closer to the daily lives of the people amidst the historical relics of the city, and this was it, built into a traditional courtyard structure preserved in a hutong setting of narrow streets and alleys -- an area I might be suspicious of in western cities, but completely safe and quiet here. EXCELLENT atmosphere. Authenticity and consistency to tradition implies a smallness to the rooms, as others have mentioned, but the bathrooms have been brought up to date and are unexpectedly stylish.

The staff were extremely helpful and courteous, and my ignorance of the Chinese language was not an issue. The included breakfasts in the dining area were the best I have had in any hotel, with choices to satisfy any preference, and the hotel chef was quite skilled. (And not that they are traditional items, but we especially enjoyed the milkshakes.)

We came from the USA and return from this trip with a very positive impression of China and its people. Courtyard 7 was a great example of the helpful, respectful, and friendly nature of the people in general, and China's efforts to preserve and present its historical relics. The staff and directorship of CY7 are clearly proud of their Chinese heritage, and China should be proud of them.

Room Tip: I stayed in a "Superior Room" on the inner courtyard. I did have a small closet. As othe...

This is a lovely hotel. We stayed here for 6 nights and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The rooms are small but beautifully decorated. All of the niceties are thought of. The room and courtyard are kept very clean. The staff is very helpful and friendly. Breakfast is provided and is excellent. The subway is close by but we could also walk to a lot of the historical sites. The neighbourhood comes alive in the evenings with lots of shops, restaurants, bars and street vendors. We definitely recommend this hotel.

This is in a great location in the heart of a bustling hutong with lots of bars, restaurants and local shops and stalls selling an array of gifts from across China.
The hotel itself is relatively basic, but clean, warm and great rustic charm. I often visit Beijing on business, and have now switched to staying at courtyard 7 rather than staying at stuffy 5 star hotels. It's charm, low price and delightful and helpful staff make every stay much more interesting than the big chains.
Close to subway, and walkable to the forbidden city and Tiananmen square.
Rooms are also very warm and cosy.

A quaint hotel with character but tiny rooms with nowhere to hang clothes. Suitcases had to put on the floor.
Staff very friendly, great location in a historical part of Beijing with loads of restauarants and shops nearby. Easy walking distance to Drum and Bell towers.

Room Tip: Maybe pricier rooms are bigger? Quite expensive all round though.

We stayed here for 3 nights and enjoyed our stay. Although we arrived late on a Friday evening and had to walk from the main road to the hotel due to no cars allowed we loved the surrounding areas. Lots of shops and restaurants and although very busy we felt very safe. Close to the metro and we walked to a lot of the sites. The staff was always helpful and friendly and the breakfast was excellent. We definitely recommend this hotel.

Our trip to China ended with four days in Beijing at the beautiful Courtyard 7. The place is in the centre of the vibrant Nanluguoxiang alley. It is buzzing with quaint shops along the hutongs and a walk around in the evenings is so much fun! Courtyard 7 the best service, with the ever smiling staff who can guide you about the places to see and offer you tips. We were in one of the back rooms, which was quiet and relaxing. Small, but cosy enough. They even packed us breakfast for our early morning flight (at 5:30 am)! And we didn't even ask for it! That was very heart warming! I would definitely recommend this place to anyone visiting Beijing. Friendly staff, beautiful architecture, buzzing hutongs. A slice of real Beijing!
