“Good buffets but expensive”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 18, 2013

We are traveling in a group of 12. Some are very picky eaters. This restaurant provides buffets that will please everyone. The prices are very high but the food is of good quality and you on't get sick.

“Good food and nice staff”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 6, 2012 via mobile

Even though most of their English was limited it was easy to get what you wanted or have questions answered. The breakfast buffet has a combination of Chinese and Western crusine that was pretty good. We did eat here one night for supper and ordered off the menu. We had the caprese salad and scallops for starter and both were very good. For entrees we had the clay pot rice, wok beef, chicken tandoori and ; we enjoyed our meals very much.

“Very good food but very very expensive....”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 5, 2012

Very nice restaurant , part of a very nice hotel ( The Peninsula) but still very expensive . I know what you are thinking if you stay in this grade of hotel then the restaurants will be expensive.
BUT the food is too expensive for what you get and the beer prices are a joke. The beer is brewed locally , china being the world's biggest brewers, so to charge what is charged is just a big joke. it is cheaper in my local tesco express and yes it has travelled all the from the brewing plant in china. The setting is excellent , the service is very good, the waiting staff do speak good English.
The did taste good though. But still the prices are way too high for china this will put people off coming back to china.

“Don't Bother with the Buffet”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed March 30, 2012

Because it's just plain average. And pricey. Too few cooked vegetable offerings, barely any protein offerings with the hot pot, gross looking soup, 1 scallop tasted good, the other I had to spit out, improper utensils for the crab claws so impossible to get the meat out, greasy stir fry dishes, and so-so deserts.

The a la cart offerings were much better, though still not fantastic, but a much better value at half the price.

“Unworthy of the Peninsula name”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed February 9, 2012

The Peninsula is one of the top hotel chains in the world and Jing is its main western cuisine restaurant at the Beijing property. I am sure that they have a top team of chefs in the restaurant and everything is up to the usual Peninsula standards; but the problem here is that it is intimidating. It intimidates their potential Chinese clientele in two ways: (1) the price, over 400 RMB after service charge, and (2) the exclusiveness of the hotel itself. The result is that it is not popular with the local people, and hence very low turnover; which is detrimental to buffet restaurants. We stayed from 6:00 PM to 7:30, and there were a total of about 15 customers. There is a decent selection, but the low turnover only allows them to put out small portions of food at a time, and also makes it difficult to keep things fresh. At the chilled seafood bar was a special Pi Pa crab from Hainan Island, but it was totally tasteless, probably over frozen and totally wasted. There was mention of lobster in some previous local reviews but I was disappointed that day. There was a goose/duck liver pate, but everything else was just average, I am sure that their a la carte menu would be much more superior. Dessert was decent. Service at the table was very good, but they need to train their open kitchen staff better. The server at the sushi table does not know what gravalax is; and the carver does not know that roast beef should come with gravy or jus. There was also this incident, I saw mint sauce and mint jelly at the grill, so I asked for some lamb. The server/cook flatly replied that there was no lamb. The manager overheard and quickly corrected him and cooked me too decent lamb racks. In all three cases, gravalax, gravy and lamb; the servers were not courteous at all. Their attitude is like “what the hell do you know about western cuisine!” Peninsula standard settings, good atmosphere, flawed service, average food; NOT worth the price of admission. The Grand Hyatt’s buffet nearby is superior in all aspects.
