“Outdated and poorly maintained”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed December 9, 2011

The hotel is located in the northwest corner of Beijing close to the fifth ring, out in the green so to say and close to the summer palace. Walking distance to the terminal station of subway line 4 is 15 min.
Beside of a grand lobby which has seen its best days, there is not too much to say: old rather poorly maintained room of average decoration and size.
There is a huge swimming pool available as well as bowling etc. Of course you will be charged extra when using any of these facilities.
The price is rather high for what you get in the end. There are hotels with a better value for money just around the corner....

I was part of a group visiting China Agricultural University for 2 weeks. This hotel was chosen for us and the entire group was staying there - otherwise, I would have checked out after the first night or two. It is relatively close to CAU (20 minute, fairly pleasant walk), so if your business is there, it's not too bad. The rooms are clean and the staff is friendly. You can request a free refrigerator for your room. Some rooms have a bathtub and some don't. If you get a room with the drain in the floor instead of an actual bathtub, request a switch so you enjoy your showers instead of turning off the water every few seconds to avoid a flood.

Bad parts: the location is awful if you want to have any fun in Beijing. The closest subway stop is a 20 minute walk away. It takes over an hour to get downtown - either by walking+subway or taking a taxi. Finding a taxi to take you downtown isn't difficult, but finding your way back home can be. Many taxis don't want to go this far out in the boonies. Others will take you but have a heck of time trying to find the place. Be prepared with a phrasebook, a map, and preferably a Chinese cell phone that you can have your driver call the hotel for directions. Even then, he might need help from you to get there.

Also, for a hotel that partially markets itself to westerners, the communication was awful. No one spoke even passable English. The night staff spoke no English, so good luck checking in after dark without a phrase book. Some people understood basic phrases - enough to check in and out, order a taxi, etc., but other than that, you need your phrase book, patience, and a willingness to go elsewhere. None of this would have been that annoying or shocking if it hadn't been the worst lodging experience I had in my time in China. My advice: stay in a hostel for half the money. You won't get your towels changed out everyday, but you'll be in a good location with a helpful staff.

Other notes: intermittent free wireless internet from the lobby; access in your room is wired and costs 10RMB/day. The hardest bed I have ever slept on - really hard, even by Chinese standards. The hotel was quiet and felt safe.
