“Good location, average service”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed December 30, 2011

The location's pretty good....walking distance to Fort Jesus and to discover the old town. Service was at best average. The staff was friendly. The rooms are basic....hot water only twice a day. Not very convenient for some of us who take hot showers whether in the north pole or sahara desert. However, we did have a good night's sleep. Breakfast was disappointing....cold sausages, potatoes, the orange and passion juices both diluted.....only positive were the fruits!

Enjoyed a very good conference on the roof top! a large room, excellent air - conditioning (actually needed to switch it off at one point!) with a good PA system and lighting.

Followed by a delectable buffet dinner outside on the terrace.
Food was tasty, well presented, and generous servings.
Drinks were reasonable priced and fresh juices were a treat!

Location is very convenient and safe parking at the back of the hotel.
Staff were smart, helpful and accommodating to our requirements.

Clean rooms with AC, fan and bath-tub. Stayed there twice, third floor, to the back (not street side). Ok value for the money (we payed 80US$ for a double). In walking distance of old town and market.

This hotel's website advertises rooms at KSH5,100, which has not been updated since 2010 and is now KSH6,000 for a double. But non-resident rates (not properly advertised ) are $125! Far better hotels in the area for half that price (even for non-residents!). We stayed at the Sai Rose hotel which had air con, fan, lcd TV etc for just KSH5,000 for a double inc breakfast and is nicely away from the hussle and bussle but only a short tuk tuk ride away from wherever you want to go.

We stayed at the Castle Royal hotel in Mombasa for a few days. The hotel is located in the heart of town, within easy walking to restaurants, markets, Fort Jesus, old town etc. You can sit in the verandah having breakfast, lunch or dinner and watch the world go by. We used the travel desk for our island hopping and tour, to the airport etc, they were efficient especially our taxi driver/tour guide Roy Pamba who far exceeded our expectations with his kindness and service, Roy is available at the front of the hotel or the travel desk will get him for you. Said Bakari at reception deserves a mention as he was great and handled our online booking and was very obliging. No problems with security at the hotel or in rooms we left our suitcases open and my lap top on the desk in our room and all was ok. Moses and his team of house keeping did a great job and were very obliging. Breakfast was ok with a limited selection, however the staff were a bit slack with clearing off the tables and topping up the food, lacked morning motivation I guess. We used the in room internet it worked well with no problems. On the down side the hotel is certainly looking tired, needs more maintenance and inexpensive repairs to give it a lift it so badly needs. We changed rooms twice, first room smelt of damp and had mould and water stains on the bathroom ceiling and around the air-conditioning unit. The second room was huge looked great however the hot water was not available, the air-conditioning did not work and at the hotel hot water was available twice a day at certain times and was only tepid. Moses and the house keeping team did a great job were very obliging and helpful. Love to go back to Mombasa and The Castle Royal if only Sentrim Hotels Group will pull their finger out and give this old 1920s Royal Dame a touch up and a new dress. Cheers.

Located by the main street gives great location but loads of noise as well. Room was decent, but was surprised with info in the bathroom of timing hot water. Breakfast buffet was very disappointing especially due to the fact that hotel restaurant serves great meals - I strongly recommend steak in pepper sauce with couple of White Caps!

My family and I stayed at the Castle Royal on 17th August, sadly just for one night.
The hotel has a great vintage feel, the staff is friendly, the location is good and our room - a triple - was clean and very spacious. We also had dinner there and the food was not a disappointment.
The only minus point I'd give to this establishment is a more general bad habit shared by several establishments in the Kenyan tourism sector: if you decide to pay your room by credit card, the hotel warns you that they are going to charge you an extra 5 percent. Someone should wake up these commercial entities to the fact that this is illegal. They join a credit-card circuit to facilitate their customers' transactions, and not o pass the buck of the related costs on to them.
Otherwise, a hotel we can heartily recommend.
