“Poor food and prostitutes”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed August 27, 2011

We booked the Bamburi Beach Hotel through one of the UK 's leading travel agents and because it was reasonably priced and looked the part. On arrival at the hotel we were greeted by the hotel staff with a complimentary drink and the usual booking in forms. The desk staff ,while efficient tend to be aloof and smiling does seem to be an effort for some of them.Tipping is sort of expected so I would keep some small denomination notes for this. We were shown to our room which was clean and was well maintained apart from a dripping shower. The hotel is well looked after and the staff are fantastic with the guests and do their best to look after you. The hotel itself caters for guests from all over Europe and East Africa and the towels on the sunbeds syndrome is alive and well, the Brits and Germans being the worst. The catering is on a buffet style basis with you helping yourself at different stations.Meal timings are marred by shortages which last for upto twenty minutes before they are rectified. The food itself is of an acceptable standard for a hotel of this rating. The Ziwahni Grill serves snacks during the day and has to be booked at night. The food is very good but takes an age to be served so do not go there if you are in a rush. The hotel has a pay reataurant,The Fishermans Cave where guests receive a 20% discount. This was very disappointing and I would not recommend this to anybody ,go to Yuls next door which is excellent has a greater choice and is comparibly priced. The most disturbing point about the hotel ,is its policy on prostitution. It does not have one. While they are not plying their trade in the hotel lobby they are certainly welcome with young Kenyan females to be seen with aging Europeans and also young Kenyan males with white grannies, not really something I would want children to be around.Beach is an open market and you will be constantly hassled by the beach boys who are pleasant enough but they always want to sell you something. If you want to book an independent safari use F King Safaris ,abasolutely brilliant and great value for money

Room Tip: North facing rooms face the sun,the further from the main building the better

Spent 6 nights here. Initially as part of a group then as a couple. Our twin bedded room was adequate size and the bathroom and shower good. Good supply of hot water -( heated by solar panels).
Great pool + kids pool. Entertainment was of good quality and varied each night of our stay.
Amazing choice of buffet food at breakfast and dinner. All tastes catered for. If you are not careful weight gain is a possible side effect!
But don't live on site get out and meet some great local people and places.

What can i say staff where lovely, but as for the food it was terrible not only was it cold but unless you like spicy asian style food there was not alot of choice, the best meal of the day was Breakfast much more veriety. There was a snack bar that was included and was open from 11am till 5.30pm and we ended up eating there most days icecrams were not included and there were no ice lollies. Bottled water was not included but they did leave a flask of water in the room and if you wanted water in the day it was in a glass. The pool and room water were salt water, the bedding looked grubby and never smelt fresh as didnt the towels around the pool or in the rooms im not even sure if the towels got washed each day or the were just put out to dry. The activities during the day were aimed at older people/ men there was nothing really for the younger child eg, 12yr old the activites included beach volley ball, water volley ball and water polo of which the men were very competative. As for the beach yes you could go down there but then you was hounded by the locals to bye goods from them so we stayed at the hotel as it was quite intimadating going down there. The evening entertainment got repeated very often. There was no where to go in the evening if it rained as all the entertainment was outside and there was no shelter from the elements, they also did a celebration dance with a foil torch filled with alcahol fire, we had see it done twice before and thought it was dangerous but on this particular evening something when really wrong and 2 of the waiting staff got seriousally burnt from the torch they came running from the resturant area alight and out onto the grass area all i can say is i do hope no-one else ever has to watch that celebration style again i hope it gets banned from being done again there are much safer was in which to celebrate . All i can say is i wish we had booked a longer safari or not stayed in kenya for 2 weeks as there was not really anything to do after our first week. Our safari was amazing we booked with Julius Safaris before we travelled and payed a deposit in the UK and then payed the rest once our safari had ended we had a lovely guide called Ferdinand and he made sure we saw the most we could and answered any questions we had, we did a 2 night 3 day safari and stayed at 2 lodges the first was called Ashnil it was old looking and the electric went off at certain times but was ok, the second called Serena Lodge although it was said to be 10 years older then Ashnil it looked more modern and was a much nicer place, the dinner hall looked out over a waterhole and was visited by many of the animals i would have been very happy to stay there fro the whole of my holiday, they also offered night safaris at Serena 7-9 or 9-11 we went on the 9-11 and got back at 11.30 it was a really nice experience seeing the animals at night we went through 100 water buffalo which was quite scary as they just stopped and stared at us and we was told they are 1 of the most dangerous animals, it was well worth the extra cost.

Room Tip: most rooms are with a sea/pool view

My kids and I stayed at the Bamburi for 3 weeks. It was just wonderful. The staff at the restaurant was nice and helpful, the food was delicious and it was clean. When my boy (12) was bored the animators Salim and Danne took him to play table tennis or squash. In fact he played squafor the 1st time and loved it. As well I didn't have to watch my daughter (8) all the time . Sometimes I didn't see her for hours but didn't have to be worried cause I knew she was taken care of. After a time she was known and if anything happened one of the staff would look for me. We all really fell in love with the place.
I could write a lot more as we were so happy there. But the best reference is to say that we will definitely be back at the Bamburi Beach Hotel in July 2012. Then for maybe 4 weeks.

This hotel is very under rated, the bedrooms are clean tidy and very few do not have a sea view. Entertainment finishes at 11.00 pm and the fully inclusive bars close at 11.30 pm. The food is very good at both restaurants and once vegatarians and vegans are well catered for as well. There is a dress code in the evening and men are asked to wear trousers and have their shoulders covered in the main restaurant. The staff are friendly and helpful.Three little niggles and they are that bottled water is not supplied in the rooms and you have to pay a charge for the room safe. The other niggle is that the pool towels aren't long enough for the beds. But that is honestly all i could say was a niggle which is nothing. The hotel was great and the First Choice Rep Victor is brilliant at his job.

Room Tip: only one plug socket but it is English sockets

We stayed at Bamburi Beach in June and were aware that it was a budget hotel when we booked it. However, we were very surprised at what we found when we arrived. The hotel although old is clean and comfortable and the staff are excellent. I have never met such genuinely friendly hotel staff anywhere in the world; they really cannot do enough for you. Anyone planning on visiting, should take the hotel on face value and embrace the atmosphere, you’ll have a great time. Make sure you speak to Merci in the dining room, she’ll make your visit. The only negative is the beach sellers who don’t come into the hotel but do pester if you are on the beach, however they are friendly and a good source of local knowledge if you treat them right and are polite and friendly.
Bring things to trade; they will swap anything for a sale, old clothing, cosmetics etc and a small amount of money.
When visiting Kenya, take with you pens, pencils, small toys, unwanted clothes and toiletries. Many people in the villages have very little and due to a drought that has lasted a few years now are struggling to provide these things for their families. Small donations like this are very gratefully received. We also saved up the tea and coffee sachets from our room and sent these to the village, which is located just through the nature park across the road from the hotel.

Room Tip: Ask for a room that faces the ocean not the rear pool and keep patio doors closed if you are out as...
