“Perfect stay in perfect place”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 1, 2010

Two days in this perfect game conservancy, where we saw not another game viewing vehicle in two days, thus wonderful game - (lions, leopard, elephant, hippo, and teeming with abundant plains game) - all to ourselves! - Tents most comfortable, delicious food, fantastic friendly service and the most knowledgeable intelligent guides we've ever known -

This was an adventure to remember. We saw a lot of wild animals on this nice location. The service was excellent.

my wife, two adult children and i saw all of the "Big 9" as well as a cheetah chase and kill in a single, all day game drive; enjoyed intelligent and informed guides, drivers, camp staff and other guests; ate as well as a king (of beasts, which is the elephant, not the lion); were engulfed by Masai warrior singing and dancing at my birthday celebration; took showers with water heated by "green" sawdust briquets; read our books by solar powered lamps in huge tents; and slept well to sounds of nearby grazing hippos and territory-staking lions, awaking to menagerie of wild birds.
many of these amenities and minor miracles are no doubt available in other camps, but good things seem more likely to happen here.

This was our second stay at Porini Lion Camp and we were met with the same gracious welcome. The staff here is great and the guides really know their stuff. We constantly tested them with questions about birds, plants, animal behavior, and much more ... they never failed to have the answer! In the last few years, there have been a lot more animals establish themselves in the Conservancy, so you don't always have to travel into the Reserve to see great animals.

I tell people we're staying in a tent ... but WHAT A TENT! It's bigger than most hotel rooms in the city and just as nice. I also love the small size - such personalized attention.

Every time we come to Kenya we plan on visiting the Porini Lion Camp.

PORINI LION CAMP – OLARE OROK CONSERVANCY

My friend and I have just returned from our 12th safari in Kenya since 1998 and have travelled with Gamewatchers Safaris for them all! I think that might make us able to give honest advice!! Every time we have had new experiences and this one held a new ‘first’ – the actual birth of a baby giraffe when we stayed at Porini Lion Camp. Yes, it was cold and had been raining heavily and we were scheduled to go to a sundowner. We noticed no cold or rain…..and our food and drink we shared inside the vehicle……as we sat enthralled for an hour and a half in the near dark! (You always know you’ve seen something special when your guides are thrilled, too. OURS WERE!)

It was here from the Lion Camp that we had some of our most memorable moments of our 2009 safari. After the terrible drought in Kenya we can’t be disappointed to be hailed as saviours because we brought rain to every one of our 5 camps visited, and so here……….however we had the tremendous benefits in that we saw not only the birth of a giraffe but also the greatest numbers of wildlife in some amazing circumstances with our superb guide and driver. Two Maasai who became our friends!

Although the largest of Porini Camps – with 10 tents – it has the accustomed comfort of warm beds, hot water available on request – whether by shower bag or enamel jugs – and delicious meals……..though they have to learn that we do mean ‘small portion’!!
We were ‘up and close’ to a pair of bat-eared foxes, mixed herds of topi, zebra, impala, buffalo, reedbuck wildebeest and, on one drive, 31 giraffe. It also seemed to be the drives that brought the babies:- cheetah, buffalo, topi, impala and zebra as well as the fantastic giraffe birth! It was no surprise that we often found areas ‘carpeted’ with lion of all ages!
What more could we want? Nothing…… but we did get more; some amazing skies and sunsets and one to rejoice in…….the rain paused…….and as we had the sun setting in front of us a complete double rainbow swung to heaven behind.

We can’t promise you all we had……but do include Porini Lion Camp in your next itinerary!

Our three night stay at Porini Lion was our first experience of Africa and Safari and what an amazing experience it proved to be in so many ways. The conservancy where the camp is located has an abundance of animals and in three days we saw all the big five bar Rhinos. our tents were spotless and very comfortable. the camp is truly eco friendly and showers are provided by staff heating 20litres of water on request and lighting was solar. with this in mind we were amazed at the quality and variety of food. the service from all staff was personal and attentive. However our greatest praise is reserved for our two Masai guides Stephen and Kennedy who made this the most wonderful experience. We spent three days in their company including morning and night drives. Their experience meant we saw so many animals but the moments we shared with them also meant that both us and our children have left the Mara with the most amazing memories of the Masai people.

Porini Lion Camp
This exclusive and luxurious safari camp set in Olare Orok Conservancy adjacent to the legendary Masai Mara Game Reserve is the most definitely the Porini flagship. Traditional East African safari tents are luxuriously equipped and have been tastefully decorated in true safari style. They are spacious, comfortable and have quality en-suite shower and toilet. The accommodation is top class but it is its proximity to the wide open game filled plains of the Mara which sets it apart. The staff were superb and the spontaneous singing and dancing ceremony we received to celebrate our fortieth wedding anniversary whilst there was most heart warming.

The days here were spent fulfilling the promise of the camp that during our stay we would get exciting and thrilling views of lion, hyenas and cheetah plus the incredible profusion of antelope and plains game, mainly wildebeest, that abounds on the open grass plains. The magnitude and sheer numbers of wildebeest, zebras and topis one witnesses is almost beyond comprehension and shocks one’s senses. That similar herds once graced all the plains of sub-Saharan Africa and no longer exist fills one with a feeling of sadness. Thank goodness they are still present on the Mara and Serengeti and can serve as a monument to those herds that no longer survive the pressures of modern man elsewhere. Viva Kenya!

Exhilarating morning and afternoon game drives were undertaken on open Land Rovers in the company of expert Masai guides Jackson and Kennedy. Their remarkable skills and local knowledge ensured us a close up and exciting viewing of the world famous wildebeest migration and crossing of the Mara River, an event that will be imprinted in our memories forever.
Conclusion
Was it a dream?

We’re still pinching ourselves......this was by far the best trip we have ever enjoyed and it exceeded all our expectations.

It goes without saying that all the game drives were amazing. The Masai guides were excellent. Their knowledge of the birds, flora and fauna and their friendly demeanor were major contributors to the success of the trip. We are left with wonderful memories of our African brothers whom we shall never forget.
The air transfers between camps by Safariairlink were great fun and an adventure in themselves. The roll calls and announcements by the pilots led to much mirth and amusement as we landed and took off at exciting and interesting dusty airfields in the middle of nowhere.
The birdlife was wonderful with over 250 different species identified, many of them “lifers”.
The wildebeest migration was unbelievably exciting and the high point the entire trip. Pictures can not do it justice.
We loved the Porini Camps, the friendly and helpful staff, our guides, the animals, the dinners, the atmosphere....oh my. As we said, it all feels like a dream!

Our heartfelt thanks go to all at Africa Geographic and Gamewatchers Safaris for a trip of a lifetime. All the arrangements were excellent, everything was just perfect.
