“simply fantastic!”

I had a chance to stay at this lovely camp with my husband. it was recommended to us by our neighbour who stayed there afews years back. we slept in a huge tent, beautifully furnished. the staff looked after us so well. we had a chance to see lots of wildlife.
Lions, Leopards, never seen so many elephants. the food was great too.
the location is superb for game viewing. we have so many photos we can wait to share them with our friends. we shall return once our baby is old enough to travel(just found out we 3 weeks pregnant! ) i am very excited!

We ( myself and my two children aged 23 and 21) arrived at Richard's on my birthday and immediately we were welcomed like old friends. The staff were absolutely wonderful and nothing was too much trouble. We have been lucky enough to spend quite a bit of time in Africa previously and I can honestly say Richards was the best ever. Our guide, Leng, understood our wishes perfectly and we were so happy to spend our days with him. The tents were incredibly comfortable and the showers the hottest and longest we have ever had. Richard is an incredible host. The food, also, was outstanding. I cannot recommend this camp enough, but guests must be aware it is unfenced and open to all manner of wildlife so probably not best suited to those of a slightly nervous disposition!

We stayed here in September 2008 and words can’t describe how incredible our stay was. It may be going too far but I would say this was the best 3 days of my life, really.
We had a spacious luxury tent which felt quite secluded, but at the same time you only needed to call out and a member of staff would be there in a moment (which is helpful to know when you hear the sounds of the wilderness at night). Nothing beats coming back from a late game drive to a hot bucket shower, hot water bottles in the bed, a bath outdoors in the middle of the Mara! The camp felt a little like it was set in a country garden, it just had an amazing feel about it and the light at dawn and dusk was stunning. And at the same time it was everything I had ever imagined the Masai Mara to be. Every meal was delicious. We felt so welcome and at home here.
Then there were the game drives. Our guides William and Sedera were just brilliant - we will never ever forget them. We spent the best part of 3 days with them, but there was never a moment we felt we needed space. Their knowledge was excellent - we learnt so much and saw every animal we would ever possibly expect to see. And it felt like we had the whole of the Masai Mara to ourselves. I could not rate the experience of the camp, the staff, our amazing guides, the game viewing, highly enough. It was completely perfect in every way and I would go back tomorrow (now, preferably).

When my fiancé suggested a safari for our honeymoon, I had my doubts. All reservations and doubts dissolved when we arrived at Richard’s Camp. Our hosts, JJ and Edwina, were wonderful and our guide made our experience unforgettable. Everything was perfect, from watching the sun set in the Mara, to seeing the wildebeest migration to a candlelit dinner with hippos. I would not change a thing!

Back from an incredible holiday in Kenya which included a stay at Richard's fabulous camp. I could have stayed there for weeks (months even!).

What could be better than eating outside, under the stars, listening to the sounds of the animals as they make their way out to hunt? Waking up at 2am to hear hippos munching grass at the edge of camp, perhaps. Having sundowners in our Land Rover as a storm swept across the plains. Sitting around Richard's cozy log fire at night listening to his hilarious stories after a fantastic meal of Roast Lamb and all the trimmings.

This is a fabulous way to safari - in a comfortable camp that feels like home, with a fabulous host like Richard, extremely attentive staff, fabulous food and drink and private vehicles for comfortable game drives with the eage-eyed spotters. The staff make it their business to ensure you have the trip of a lifetime here - and we did. The memories of Richard's Camp will stay with me forever. I very much hope that one day I will go back.

I spent two nights at Richard's Camp in low season where despite heavy rain and flooding, the mood remained extremely positive and the service was always with a smile. The game drives were quite outstanding watching a lioness and her cubs, two stalking lions, leopard (!) croc, birdlife and hippo/topi/buffalo/wildebeest/gazelle galore with Richard and Sedera our experienced spotter. The other family staying also raved about their game driver and guide called William. We witnessed a spectacular thunderstorm from afar and the open spaces allowed for stunning sunsets. The stay was made particularly special by the presence of Richard and Foxy the dog, the staff and chef who made us delicious meals.

We are a family with four small children, aged 3,5,7 and 9. Contrary to popular advice in the UK, we took them all with us to Kenya for the most amazing holiday we have ever had. We started at Richards Camp and wish we were still there. Liz and RIchard (the Camp Owners) could not have been more accomodating and helpful. I can't understand the previous reviewers from Bognor Regis, it's not a 'boys camp' at all. The camp manager was a woman, and Liz is always around. THere is a strong female influence. The staff are all male, but Masai women stay at home and look after their own families, you would be unlikely to find Masai women working in any camp. The tents are fantastically comfortable, and have every thing in them you could possibly want, flushing loos, hot showers, wonderful hand made soaps etc. There's also the best bathroom in the world, a free standing bath, in a fenced off glade in the woods, lit by candles, hot water and bubbles galore. The children thought it was wonderful (plenty of room for two grown ups afterwards to have a bath together with a drink, while the children are eating supper, total bliss!)

Our children slept in a tent close by ours, and were thrilled to be watched over by their own Ascari (night guard, armed with real bow and arrows) so if any of them wanted us in the night there was no problem. Liz took care that the children ate when it suited them, either after the afternoon safari, or better, picnic supper by the river, watching the hippos fighting and splashing as the sun went down. Grown ups ate later, all together on a long table, candlelit, under the trees outside. Hyenas and lions could often be heard while we dined. The most delicious food, and wonderful relaxed yet efficient service from the camp staff. Richard's extraordinary knowledge of local wildlife, meant that he could tell you what bird call you heard, or which of the big cats is roaring. His easy charm and generous laugh is infectious, and makes the camp a relaxed and welcoming place to be. The wildlife is incredible, there's something interesting everywhere you turn, and the children sat fascinated for hours in our landrover, asking endless questions of our charming and very knowledgable Masai guides. They learnt an enormous amount, not just about animals, but about Masai people and Africa in general. After three days of total bliss, we were driven to the other camp that we had pre booked. Kitchwa Tembo, in the Masai Mara. The children wept copiously when our lovely guides, Lekutas and Sedara dropped us off. After two hours, we realised that a tented resort, complete with swimming pool and restaurant was not what we wanted at all, so after some panic struck phone calls, we went back to RIchard's Camp and stayed there another three days. We couldn't have been happier or more relieved to get 'home'! For our last night, we had a particularly special treat, there wasn't enough room to accomodate us in the camp, so Liz and Richard sent us up to their new camp, then, not yet open (but it is now!) called Little Richards. It's about 2hrs away by landrover, still in the Mara, but completely different terrain. Utterly, utterly beautiful but still carrying the same grace and incredible good taste that Liz brings with her in everything from the tent interiors to the central mess tent, where there are wonderful sofas, and lighting and masses of books to read, in front of an incredible view of the Mara.
This second camp is smaller, and suitable for a party of people to take exclusively, it would be a wonderful place to stay for a few days and we will almost certainly go back taking friends with us.

DO go to Richards Camp, I can't believe ANYONE right thinking would regret a minute of it.The REAL secret about this part of the Mara,(Masai Conservation Area) is that it is mostly Masai owned and there fore guides in their Landrovers do not have to stick to the tracks as they do in the main Mara Reserve. You see a lot more animals here, and a lot closer too. It's fabulous.
