“The perfect safari experience!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 7, 2014

Richard's camp was full of unexpected surprises. The accommodations were amazing and felt so surreal to be in the middle of rural Africa with all the sights and sounds but still able to enjoy sleeping in a king size bed and having cocktails on a sofa in an open air living room! It felt so luxurious having coffee, chai and cookies delivered to our tent with our wake up call. And we can't say enough about our amazing guide, William. He found every animal we ask for and then some! His ability to spot them from what seemed like miles away was amazing. Every day was an adventure driving through rivers and bushes to explore the wilderness. We did not expect to have the amount of timing provided to go on safari drives and we took full advantage from the moment we were picked up at the airport until we were dropped by off ... literally, every second we could spend on safari we did! Alisa and Thor were so thoughtful and always asking if we needed anything and making sure we spent our (very short) time there doing what we wanted. Richard was the perfect host and took time to talk to us even though he was busy actively tagging elephants during our stay! The camp was bustling with "saving the elephant project" people during our visit but it was fascinating to see what we only get to watch in documentaries happening right before our very eyes! We loved the stories they shared and will remember this experience forever. We wish we had more time there to actually spend some time hanging out and exploring the camp itself. Maybe next time :)!!!! Thanks for the great memories!!!

Thank you so much for writing a review of Richard's River Camp- Its always so interesting for us to hear what the highlights of our guest's stays were. I know the camp was bustling (to say the least) with all the MEP crew- helicopters, planes and cars all a-go. But as you say- its always great to see conservation in action, and to meet all of the fascinating people that make it happen . We too were all highly entertained by a certain someones magic tricks.... I am still scratching my head as to how they were done!

Thank you for coming to stay and please do come and visit us again soon-

All the best to the whole family,

Alisa

If you want a memorable Mara experience, go to Richard's Camp. Immediately we felt welcomed, like part of the family, and were shown to our outstanding tent accommodations with had outside showers (showering under the stars is awesome!). The dining tent was so comfortable and the meeting tent became a hangout for us, very comfortable seating and a relaxed atmosphere. We spent many hours in the evening sitting by the bonfire and talking with our hosts and fellow travelers. Richard, who is inspiring and a man of his word, spent time with us talking about the Mara Elephant Project. He has really put his heart into saving elephants. Alisa and Thor were also wonderful, finding time to help out in any way they could, including some of our group's dietary requirements. They were always so nice and went out of their way to make us feel at home.

Our game drives were more than memorable, driving through the incredibly beautiful Mara, finding through experiences eyes many animals we couldn't have seen on our own. The dedicated Maasai guides were so much fun, laughed with us, found wonderful site to show us, and really knew their stuff.

After spending two weeks at other sites in Kenya, I would definitely come back to Richard's Camp first, spending more time in the vast outdoors and taking in the spirit of the land and people.

Room Tip: The very end tent area had hippos and zebras wandering right past.

Richard's Camp provided the picture perfect environment we envisioned when planning a memorable African vacation. The accommodations including the tents and common areas were beautifully decorated and luxurious. The food was fresh from the garden and prepared beautifully. Our hosts, Alissa and Thor, were charming--a pleasure to meet, entertaining, knowledgeable and ensured all of our needs were met. Our walking safari and bush dinner were "out of a movie set". The quantity of animals we saw was incredible including late night adventures and early morning drives. 5 stars on all accounts.

Thank you so much for a great review of River Camp- It's great to hear that you loved our new family tent, it has been very popular with guests like yourselves who are travelling with children.

We walked along the river to a bush dinner last night, you would have loved it- we saw so much... 3 of the big five (lion, buffalo and ele's) plus the hippo and giraffe. It was a stunning night, stars were out in full force and there was just a sliver of the moon above us… Chorus of tree frogs and hyenas for our soundtrack. Then we saw TWO aardwolves on our way back to camp!

Please come and visit us again.

All the best,

Alisa

We spent 3 nights at Richards camp and I have missed it ever since!!

The highlight for me was the game drives. Our guide, Lenkume, was amazing. He could spot animals that looked like dots on the horizon to me. I will never forget the day we were zipping along when he stopped, pointed to a far away hill, and announced that there was a lion. We went over and saw a male lion eating and guarding its giraffe kill while the female lions and cubs napped in the shade of a nearby tree. This was only one of many amazing spottings by Lenkume.

The rest of the staff was also top notch. Alisa and Thor seemed to anticipate our every need, and they were so knowledgeable about the land and animals. It was great to chat with them each night over dinner. The food was amazing and the tents were very comfortable. The definition of "glamping".

We went at the beginning of March and it seemed to be a great time to go. We had our own vehicle and guide and only saw a couple of other cars each day. Lots of baby animals as well.

My only wish is that Richards camp was closer to home so we could visit more often. I definitely hope to go back!!

Thank you Anne for taking the time to write us a review. We are so glad to see that you enjoyed your stay at River Camp, and we too hope that you will be back out to visit us again one day soon.

I will be sure to pass on your comments to Lenkume- He never fails to amaze with what he can spot!

Everything is now very green as the first of the rains started about two weeks ago, but we have been lucky in that we are still having beautiful warm sunny days.

All the best,

Alisa

The Hainsworth family - 4 children and parents, had an amazing time staying at Richard's Camp. Kaila and Shawn, the hosts are amazing, so helpful and the perfect hosts. The accommodations were luxurious, the food was so tasty. And being right in the middle of the reserve was amazing, to see wildlife around you, and to hear them, it was thrilling. The guides they arranged were so knowledgable and friendly. We couldn't recommend this any higher.

We stayed at Richard's Camp in September and were treated like family and royalty at the same time. Nothing was too much for our hosts Alysha and Tor, assisted by Kayla and Sean from the other camp. The facilities were outstanding - we have never seen tents this luxurious! And Wi-Fi in the middle of the Masai Mara! Who knew?
The game drives were everything we could have wished for and our guide's knowledge about the birds and wildlife was limitless.
The food was also great - even a full breakfast cooked over a fire, and I really liked the piping hot tea and coffee with the wake-up call!
We will recommend this camp to everyone.
