“Mediocre at best”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed August 27, 2012

The resort is located in a beautiful area right infront of the Mara River where hippos gather. However, that is the only good thing about this place. Our room, despite being newly weds and having informed the place as such had two twin beds. The beddings were old as were the towels. The bathrooms have not been touched probably since the place was built and we had no hot water in our rooms until we complained and were moved to other rooms the next day.

The food was not enough and there was always a mad rush to the buffet line. One of the staff members actually advised us to get to the dining room as soon as it opened because once the food is gone it's gone regardless of whether you got there in the allotted dining time or not.
There is also quite a bit of strong arming by the "rangers". I put that in quotes because we were charged for a safari we did not go on and were never given a receipt.
We got packed lunch for our safari the following day and it turned out to be a science experiment. The meat was green (leftover lamb from the previous night), the cold cuts smelled rotten and the popcorn was stale.
I will not be going back and I would not recommend the place either.

LivingstoneMara, Manager at David Livingstone Safari Resort, responded to this review, September 1, 2012
Thanks for the comment, however actual facts are not reflected, first off the Lodge does have hot showers and that was an isolated case where a block of a room had a problem with the heating system which was fixed and in the mean time you were moved to different rooms.
As for the food there it's untrue that a staff member would advise you that if your are not on time for meals you will miss out, dinner was late on one night and the Manager put a notice prior to dinner time for everyone to read.
As for the picnic lunch it's over exaggerated since other people had the same picnic boxes but only you had a problem.
In summary the safari was organized by an interdependent tour operator and not david livingstone, there for the extra safaris that's between you and the tour operators as for the undeserved complaint it's unfair and not true.

Let me start with the best part, which is the hippo pool right in front of the bar, the Resort is an average resort, we stayed in the standard room (room 42). The bed is comfortable, room is small but cozy, but never triple share the room. The bathroom was the big disappointment, it was really small also though it was clean it did have a unclean feel (like a low end resort).
Do not expect much with food either, basic buffet composed of a couple of veggies, and expect them to be repeated, (we ate spinach for all the 4 days). Though they had a lot of Indian cuisine but the taste just did to hit the mark.
Also since this resort is not in the Mara Triangle (National park part) of the Game reserve expect a package with only one day (or none) in the actual park, which is a much better location compared to the reserve.
Though the Manager Peter was very helpful and polite the same cant be said for some of the other staff especial the reception, who was uninterested. The Library and the sting area are good and comfortable

me and my sister stayed there October 2011.
As we arrived a baboon walked across the entrance to the hotel....what a welcome!!
Lovely helpfull and friendly staff, who welcomed us with a drink and a view of around 50 hippos having a rest in the amazing mara river.
The place was quiet and calm, there was the odd noise out of the hippos but that was part of the magic there.
The food was nice, we had a bush baby join us in the resturant one night. Lovely to get up close to this creature, he didnt bother any one at all.
At night they light a log fire, in an open wooden building. we sat there on the cosy sofas drinking tea and reading our books. was really special.
Rooms are really clean, with nice basic bathrooms, with towls, flannels, shampoo and body wash. Wasnt expected but nice to have.
Perfect place to stay if you want to be right in the middle of it, i would stay there again, and hope to one day. Perfect safari location!!

Great place to stay, we were spoilt and pretty much had the place to ourselves. The staff were very friendly and welcoming and the food was delicious. Lovely location next to the Mara river with all its hippos (make sure you have ear plugs as they can be quite noisy at night!). Great time on safari as well, just the 2 of us and the driver for 3 out of our 4 game drives, very knowledgeable driver.
