“AN INCREDIBLE ENCAMPMENT”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 3, 2013

What a wonderful spot. It is the perfect location for seeing the animals of the Maasai. The staff was excellent; the drivers superb and so well informed. Philip and Katie, the managers, were delightful. One of the selling points for me was their connection to a charity that helps finance the Mara Rianda Boarding School. Our family and grandchildren visited this amazing facility and we were able to help out with tuition for the children attending. We funded two of the young ladies who are studying there. The children of Kenya are so eager to learn and so appreciative of the chance to do so. Be sure and visit this school if you stay at Governor's Camp.

The animals roam free among the tents at night but there are many guards who keep them from visiting your room!

My family is wanting so much to return to Kenya and to Governor's Camp soon.

Best location, best game, best guides, just amazing. I had been in Masai Mara in June and really loved it, but when I found out I am returning to Kenya and will have a weekend to kill I decided I had to go to this place that everybody recommended. They were right. Sited on top of the Mara River in a wooded area full of game (including leopards), this is the place to go. There is a reason the British Governors selected this place for their safaris. Our guide, John, was exceptional. I challenged him to find me a leopard and he worked tirelessly to deliver. Along the way he was a fountain of information. The tents are perfectly located if you do not mind hearing the hippos talk at night. The lunch area is where the hippos eat at nights and where the almost pet warthog walks around our tables. Staff are wonderful and management very attentive. I will be back.

The whole experience was fantastic. The tent we stayed in had views looking over the plains which was wonderful to see buffalos grazing in what was our front garden! The fact that it wasn't fenced in made it even more special to see the hippos coming out of the river at night and grazing by the tent when we had gone to bed! I had my 21st at the camp which was an unforgettable experience, the camp had brought in the Maasai Warriors to do a performance after dinner where they sang and danced and the chef brought out a birthday cake. I could not have asked for anymore on my birthday and the camp pulled out all of the stops to make the day the best day of my life. It is the second time my parents have been to the camp and we would definitely go again. The staff are so hospitable and the food was absolutely delicious. We saw every animal we wanted to see and more. We were there during the migration which was fantastic, a special thanks must go to Japhet for being such a wonderful tour guide. We were so sad to leave, everything was perfect.

Room Tip: Tents facing the plains give spectacular views to greet you in the morning

We stayed at Governor's Camp during Easter 2013 and absolutely loved it! We took the hotel's plane from Nairobi to the hotel's airstrip and met our own driver / guide immediately after landing. We took three safaris per day with our guide and saw basically all the wild animals one could imagine (besides rhinos). The food at the hotel was very good and service was excellent.

Governor's Camp has a great historical feeling to it and words cannot tell how perfect it is to sleep in "a tent" in the middle of wildlife! You can hear elephants passing by in the middle of the night and hippos eating grass just a couple of meters away while you are asleep.

Although Governor's Camp is a rather expensive experience, it is worth every penny!

Room Tip: Ask for a tent next to the river bank!

It was like a family gathering out in Africa. We were made to feel so at home. The staff were so helpful and accommodating and Nikki was an excellent hostess. The Game drives were great, and our guide, Gideon, was brilliant at getting us the sights we came to see. The accommodation is not luxurious......but what do you want when your on a safari camp? It was clean, had all the necessary provisions you needed - including your tea delivered to your tent ( as a wake up call) at 6am ready for the 6:30 game drive. The "en suite" in tent bathroom was more than adequate and had on tap running hot water ( as long as the fire was kept stoked in each tents individual water stove). The food was excellent and varied. The site was interesting as it lies on the river bank with Hippo and Crocs just tens of feet below you in the gorge. At night the Elephants invaded camp on a couple of occasions waking us up and causing us to take round-about pathways to get across camp. Saw all the animals we hoped to plus more - only the cheetah eluded us. An added fantastic experience was the sunrise balloon trip and breakfast picnic out on the plains. Very sad to leave and already wishing to return. Sorry most of my pictures were too big to upload.

Totally amazing - accomodation, food, staff - brilliant. Nothing was too much.

Amazing game drives. Our driver- Sopia was an excellent guide - totally determined to ensure we saw the "big five" - and our pursuit of the illusive leopard resulted in a totally unforgetable experience (check out the Governor's Camp blog for the story about the fight between two lionesses and a leopard - we saw it! - the leopard thankfully escaped).

The tents were very comfortable with great bathrooms. The morning wake up call very civilsed with tea brought to your tent and the setting by the Mara river outstanding.

Hippos and elephants and warthogs roaming freely through the camp (armed rangers on a night to escort you to the restaurant tent - so safe).

Fantastic experience. Definitely recommend.

Room Tip: We had a double and twin tent - bote in great locations - very good standard and all seemed to be in...

We were on our honeymoon and stayed at 5 different camps. This was not the most luxurious camp, but it was very nice and was our overall favorite. There are several reasons for this - the food is good with large variety. The rooms are nice and big, and our tent was on the river so we had nice views (saw a croc and a hippo from there). The camp is right next to prime safari areas, in fact we saw 4 of the big 5 (just missed the rhino) and also saw numerous other animals (like cheetah, zebra, wildebeast, wart hogs, too many to name). This was definitely our favorite safari, Duncan was our guide and he was really amazing. I would recommend this place to anyone, it had the perfect balance of coziness, friendly staff, and amazing safari. Oh, and the staff if helpful and there is a lot of guards around, so it was easy to get back and forth between rooms.
