“Luxury Safari”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 24, 2014

Like every other Fairmont property, this hotel is luxurious and lovely. The hotel's rooms are actually modern and convenient tents (with great beds, washrooms and the usual facilities, of course) , which make the stay very special. In addition, the hotel makes it possible for active travelers to enjoy their activities in the Maasai Mara National Park ( such as hot air ballooning, game drives and more ) , and enjoy relaxing evenings at the great hotel, in luxurious conditions.

Having now stayed at Ngerende and the Fairmont Mara, I can offer a bit of a comparison. The tents at Fairmont Mara, while lovely and luxurious, cannot compare to the tents at Ngerende, but that is about the only place where Fairmont falls short. We found the food to be excellent at Fairmont. The highlight for me was an exquisitely tender and flavorful Maasai beef filet, and no one should miss the curries! The main lodge was the place to be, whether it was to check your e-mail or enjoy a post-safari Tusker in front of the large fireplace (or catch a World Cup game, as was the case while we were there). There was plentiful seating to either converse privately or meet some new friends.

Our game drives were magnificent, and we found Evans to be an extremely experienced and capable guide. Of the six drives we went on, only one was a bust. In one afternoon drive, we found all of the Big Five, and throughout the weekend, had multiple leopard and cheetah spottings. Since Fairmont is larger than Ngerende, there are more vehicles out in the Reserve, so you're more likely to get to see the harder-to-find animals when the guides call to each other. Evans went above and beyond, often keeping us out past the scheduled time if there were more animals to see. The vehicles are also very nice and even kept us dry on the one morning it was raining!

As safe as we felt in the camp, we had some reminders that we were still definitely in the wild: the hippos noisily coming back to the river in the morning, a shrieking rock hyrax at 5:15 AM, scaring up a dikdik on the way back to our tent, etc. And one morning, I poked my head out of the tent to check the weather and came face to face with a bush baby!

The Fairmont Mara definitely did not disappoint, and I would highly recommend it.

A fabulous facility is what we expected and Mara Safari Camp delivers even more. But when you are paying top dollar for a safari experience, that's not what is most important. It's about the animals. And more, it's about a guide who can bring the savannah alive for you. The camp is exquisite and well maintained, with good food, personal service, and many thoughtful touches like a cool towel and mango juice on arrival, a personal check-in while sitting on the verandah, and a tent that sports heating, running water, a shower, and a flush toilet. Luxury in the wilderness for sure. And none of that matters if your guide can't find wildlife or tell you about it when he does. We had an unfortunate beginning, going out in a heavy rain and seeing almost nothing on the first drive. Over our 2.5 days, things improved, but a guide who was better at telling us what his plans were to find wildlife and about the habits of the animals we were seeing would have added immensely to the experience.

What an extraordinary experience! Spectacular and wonderful staff coupled with a beautiful location on the Mara river in the Masai Mara Reserve. The tents are luxurious and the food was delicious. We awoke each morning to a hot cup of coffee delivered with our wake-up. The hippos had just returned to the river from their night out and we were able to watch as they settled in on the banks for the day, The safari staff were really great. We were able to find and see the Big Five during our visit. We can't wait to return.

Room Tip: All tents are wonderful.

We spent two magical evenings here on a Trips Kenya safari. It was the last stop, and they must have saved the best for last. Our "tent" (if you can call it that) overlooked a ribbon of the river with happy hippos bobbing up and down in the water. You could hear them day and night. The local tripe of Masaii warriors also performed in our hotel lobby one evening and that was a treat I will never forget as they whooped and jumped as high as Michael Jordan.

The tents themselves are amazing. We had two canopy beds, a little patio just perfect for happy hour, a sitting area and a wonderful bathroom with separate toilet and shower facilities. During certain hours of the day, the electricity is turned off, but that never bothered us as we were on safari. The electricity is also turned off at midnight, but by that time we were in bed and really had no need to wander outside the tent. Flashlights were also provided. On our laswt night there, we heard clanging and shouting from across the water.. it was the Masaii warriors herding their cattle or scaring off elephants. It was a surreal experience I will never forget.

This wonderfully situated and great tented lodge was everything you could hope for in a Masai Mara Safari. The camp is big enough to not feel cramped. The accommodation is great, the staff absolutely amazing and they make every effort to ensure your experience is memorable.

Room Tip: Make sure you book a massage with Maggie the Masseuse - best ever massage.

We arrived at this camp via light Aircraft and we were well looked after from the moment we landed! The hotel is decorated in a fantastic African theme and the rooms overlook a river full of hippos! The staff were very friendly and always happy to help. The tents were lovely and we loved the game drives - our driver Kit was fabulous, his father was a guide when he was a boy and he passed all his knowledge onto him. It's not a job it was his passion. He was so knowledgable and it was a joy to watch. The camp took us all out for a bush dinner on our second night and it was a very special experience watching the massi warriors dancing round the fire under the stars. A must do on safari!! We also did a nature walk during our stay which was very informative and quite special to walk about with the animals at a distance!! A great camp and the Massi Mara is not to be missed!!

Room Tip: All tents have a view of the river it's pot luck what animals you see floating by. But exciting...
