“Lovely lodge and Tent Cabins”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 9, 2014

We enjoyed staying a few nights at this resort. We had been looking forward to being in a luxury tent resort. We couldn't have enjoyed it any more. We had our safari by the Micato Safaris and they had "sun downers", basically open bar with appetizers. The dinners and breakfasts were complete but we had early morning safaris to go to. Amazing drives as you can see from others pictures posted.

Room Tip: Rooms are along a river and hippos wake you up in the morning with their interesting "roar"...

Unbelievable, an adventurers must do in a life time. There was no time to sleep 8 hours you had to wake up early for the delightful breakfast by the river and then a game drive. I must tell you the game drive was like watching National Geographic channel only difference you were in the documentary taking the pics n video taping. I can't describe it words but it was beyond my expectations I saw everything except a leopard. Our room was a tent, inside looked like the chambers of a British explorer on a safari trip during the 1800s. And the service was so great, staff became friends and leaving was a sad experience. Of in Kenya I will 100% go back to Fairmont Mara Safari club. Thank you for an unforgettable time.

We visited here November 2008 so this review is a little late. But it was such a memorable experience had to share. Wonderful accomodations (tent cabins, don't forget to zip up the tent of you'll have bush babies going thru your stuff), amazing service (hot water bottles to warm your bed, wakeup service with tea, coffee and pastries delivered to your tent), and the best food (aged maasai beef we had for dinner still wins best meal ever award in my mind). Lunch is a buffet you eat outdoors overlooking the river with hippos. The best part of it, though? The game drives. Kiefer, our driver, found us all the animals on the Big 5 and several times over. We got to get very close to the animals but I'm guessing they're used to it because it didn't seem to bother them. Got to pet a baby rhino (don't get btw baby and mama though). Another family joined us on our drives and they invited us along on a trip to the Maasai village.
It's not inexpensive, but it's worth it. This is an experience that will stay with you forever.

I didn't make that statement lightly. Two million air miles and hundreds of fine hotels to compare with. We slept in luxurious "Fairmont" tents that allowed us to go to sleep to the sounds of wildlife and hippos at night. The property perched over the Mara river feels totally isolated from the world, and at times during the day there is no electricity (runs on generator). Don't even think of turning on your Iphone - what a treat to see people's faces again. The highlight is the easy access to thousands of varieties of wildlife on the daily drives or hot air balloon. Despite the remote location F&B is very much up to Fairmont standards. Best of all the staff. Samuel was assigned to us for our 4 days of game drives and our trips to and from the airport. He is an outstanding guide who can sniff the Mara or look for some different animal movement and know where to go. We saw four of the big five (no leopards in the area lately) and got spectacular photos. The staff were so friendly to my daughter Kate, they invited her to a staff party in the staff quarters to celebrate Women's Day. You will never forget this property.

Room Tip: For a premium there are slightly larger tents with delightful private outdoor showers. They are on l...

This resort is one of my all time favorites, especially if you want a romantic time, time to be with nature, or time to unwind. If you like wild animals and 4-wheeling, all the better, as there is plenty of that, too. Even without the room charge, the daily cost is $90 for food and over $80 for park fees per person per day. All safaris and other activities are additional, safaris are $60 per person and range from 2-3 hours. When you arrive you are assigned a personal "handler" with whom you take safaris and book all your activities. During my visit the place was nowhere near full, so it felt like i was in paradise just with my wife. Most of the staff remembered our names and knew exactly what activities we planned (no secrets, unless you put the "privacy please" sign on your tent. Oh, yes, you get your own tent, but it's the nicest tent I've seen with a private bath and optional private outdoor shower. It was such a great design, I wish I could duplicate it for myself closer to home. One drawback for Americans coming hiere is just how difficult it is to get to. It will take about 2 days, but, believe me, you won't be disappointed. The 2 things that could be improved: the food was superb but not as good as I expected. Music from the staff quarters (it is so secluded that its staff must reside onsite) wafted over the nighttime peacefulness of the densely forrested grounds. Fortunately, it ended by 10. The early safari leaves at 6:30AM before breakfast is served, so you'll want to get to sleep early if you plan to participate. Without TV or internet in the room, there's only a few activities to do there anyway. There is a lobby bar and lobby internet with roaring fireplace which is still needed in the hot African summer during the night when chances are you'll need a cover-up to keep comfortable.

Room Tip: All rooms face the river with excellent views in a semi-circle, more of less, with the staff quarter...

We flew into the Masai Mara from Malindi which took about 2 hours. It was a new experience for us landing on gravel air strips but the pilots seemed to just do it casually and so well. We had 2 stops before arriving at the Mara Safari Club so were getting quite accustomed to the landings and take-offs.
We were met at the air strip by our driver/guide for the stay, Kepha. We were also provided with warm, wet towels to refresh ourselves and a very welcome drink.
The drive to the camp was only a few minutes. Check in was quick and we were shown to our tent. It is a tent. It has canvas sides and roof. The entrance does zip up. It also has a four poster bed, a dressing area, a shower and toilet. Let's say it's not camping Boy Scout style! Adan, the guy who looked after us, even put a hot waster bottle in our bed! It wasn't really that cold to us though.
Re "Sleep Quality". It was good once you got used t the hippos roaring!!
Lunch was served at a table overlooking the river. There's lots to see while you enjoy your meal.
The choice of meals is a bit limited but very good.
After lunch we started our game drives. All I can say is WOW!! We saw all sorts of wild life. The only animal we missed out on was a leopard. It wasn't through lack of trying by Kepha. He searched for us but the leopards just weren't performing for us.
The camp grounds are full of birds and we even had some monkeys resting on our veranda. There are viewing points from which you can look down into the river and watch the hippos.
Before we went to the Mara Safari Club we had a problem with the flight back. We were supposed to be flying back to Mombasa which would have involved a two and a half hour drive to our hotel instead of 15 minutes from Malindi. I mentioned this to John, the manager I think, and asked if he could help us to fly back to Malindi. Don't ask me how he did it but we flew back to Malindi.
We really enjoyed our our stay at the Fairmont Mara Safari Club. Enjoy yours!

When I heard that we were staying in tents, I thought I would absolutely hate it. But it was great, we had tent #5 which was a good location. The hippos in the river right outside the tent made a racket during much of the time but it wasn't disturbing.

Food was good. Only problem was that we asked for a wake up knock twice and never received it either time. Be sure to take the early morning balloon ride with JP! An hour isn't long enough but the hotel provides a champagne breakfast wherever the balloon lands. Absolutely stunning experience start to finish.

Room Tip: Ask for a tent close to the main building. Some of the tents are a bit far to walk.
