“Mara Sopa Lodge”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 3, 2012

We have traveled several times throughout Africa, and many times to Kenya. And the Masai Mara has to be one of the top two destinations of my choice. We traveled with Affable Safaris and Tours out of Nairobi and the Sopa Lodge is their choice of lodges in eastern Mara. Yes, the roads are a little rough getting to the Sopa Lodge, but hey that's all part of the experience. With our guide Agoi, of Affable Safaris, we had absolutely no problems. Agoi's many years of experience provided a perfect safari and this part of the Mara is wonderful. The Sopa Lodge is located such that you can reach many varied sections of the Mara and see all the game you can imagine - lots of leopard, cheeta, and lion...But, back to the Sopa Lodge, this is a terrific lodge for the price and just a shade below what you might experience at the higher end Serena. The Staff were especially friendly, and we always felt welcome after our return each day from safari. We stayed at the Sopa for four nights - the rooms are very comfortable, good sized showers, and very comfortable beds. The food is good and plenty to eat - the only negative might be that because we were there four nights we got to eat the same menu more than once. But, buffet style was great. We do recommend the Mara Sopa Lodge as a great destination (and Affable Safaris and Tours).

“Not the Best One”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed April 14, 2012

The Lodge was supposed to be a great option for safari trip. The rooms are really nice and comfortable. The food is great. The staff is very helpful and friendly. They even have some animals fed regularly (hyena, bush babe, etc.)

But... Electricity and hot water is provided some hours a day only. Particular, it is not available during most of day time between game rides.

The location of Lodge is not very convenient for game rides. There is only one road leading to park and you'll end up with necessity to drive for 20-30 minutes through the same area each time when going to or returning from animals watching. It's quite boring.

And the last. Never use your credit card there!!!! Be sure that you'll be surprised with huge payment posted against your account. Unless your bank react in timely manner to stop any suspicious charges.

Room Tip: Rooms located close to reception area are very noisy during day time. (Example Room # 35, 36)

“Not for bad backs!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 11, 2012

Very comfortable rooms, good food, very friendly staff, the Mara Sopa was our first "game lodge" on our Safari in Kenya and all in all our stay here was a great experience enhanced by the architecture of the buildings.
However the road approaching the lodge is in appalling condition with pot holes and wash outs literally metres deep! This is the only road and must be travelled to do the game drives. It's sort of fun but not if you have any sort of back ailment.

Room Tip: Unless you are travelling with children, you may want to make sure that the people next door to you...

“Very Comfortable Stay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 2, 2012

We were pleasantly surprised with our stay. We stayed 3-nights, full board (which excludes drinks). The food was excellent and was usually buffet style. The rooms are very spacious and nice. They have a friendly staff and all in all we felt very comfortable.

We stayed in a hut with two rooms. The only problem we came across was that our neighbors were very early risers and we could hear their conversations.

The lodge offers daily activities like nature walks, animal viewing and bonfire with traditional Masai dance. Make sure to check out their activities board, which isn't very well advertised.

Room Tip: Rooms close to the main lodge. If possible, a hut without neighbors.
