“Wild and wonderful”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 29, 2013

Keekorok is a wonderful place to stay , it feels well established and traditional. The location is great and rooms have wonderful views often with wildlife wandering right in front of your room.Where else can you wake in the night to find zebras grazing at your door in the moonlight. The restaurant was good with plenty of choice and good service. The hippo pool is good to visit and game drives in the Mara are truly outstanding - the abundance of wildlife is amazing. There are no doubt more luxurious properties to stay in but this one is friendly , comfortable and you are made to feel welcome . No complaints whatsoever , would recommend and stay again .

We arrived at the Lodge very late in the evening as we had some trouble with transport. The staff at the lodge were in constant contact with our driver, in order that we could gain access to the game reserve. I feel that they really went above the call of duty here. From the moment we arrived the staff were wonderful. The staff genuinely seemed to want to make sure you had a great time, and it felt a little less forced than other resorts I had been at within Kenya this holiday. The Masai were so informative, we were guided to our room by torchlight as the lodge is unfenced and so they escort you as there are animals roaming freely in the darkness. On the way to our room we were greeted by zebra, buffalo and wildebeest grazing outside our room. The room itself was dominated by a huge, extremely comfortable bed, which had a canopy mosquito net which was put out and then returned each day by the staff who also turned down the room. The shower was hot with good pressure. The room was clean and had wonderful views over the Mara, you could sit on your balcony and watch nature unfold before your eyes. The power outages were at convenient times of day, so they interfered very little with anything. The food was nice enough, although the choices were sometimes odd, apparently though the desserts were amazing! The hippo pool was a wonderful place to spend the day, watching the hippos wallowing and the crocodiles sunbathing, watching herds of elephants wandering past along with all the other animals of the mara. I sat there for hours talking to Samson the bar man who would happily point out all the birds and passing wildlife, giving you information about them all. He was a wonderful man, who always made you feel welcome and told you the good times of day to be there to see things happen, like the hippos returning to land to graze of an evening. We also went on a nature walk that are organised by the lodge, which was a good bit of fun and we learnt about Masai life (and a lot about poo!) The game drives from the lodge were fantastic, the location of the lodge is wonderful and within moments you are seeing what you came to see. Joshua one of the Masai is so happy to share his experience, he has a vast knowledge and was ready to point out the birds, insects and smaller creatures, whilst we were on the hunt for the big 5.

After reading some of the negative reviews, was sceptical how my experience of the lodge will be. However, after staying there for two days, I presume the negative feedback was indeed biased and uncalled for. An excellent lodge with one of the best location in the safari game reserve. A perfect place to unwind yourself after the game drives with all the possible comforts you can ask for in the middle of a safari park. The hippo bar is their prime attraction. Special mention must be made of the security personnel who are always on the alert as hippo's, zebras do loiter in the gardens of the hotel in the night. The food was excellent and so was the desert. A memorable experience.

The welcome after a long drive was very welcoming and appreciated. The room was fine and clean if a little dated. In fairness, by the time you get back from your game drive, you'll be too wiped out to care! The service from all the staff was excellent and they made the effort to sound like they cared how good your day had been. The food was excellent with a huge amount of choice. Very tasty too. The only time I saw an unhappy customer was an incredibly large American with 3 dinner plates crammed full of food, complaining that his sweet potato was too salty! No pleasing some people. I'm sure he got his daily calorie intake from the other 2 1/2 plates. Plus desert! You can't fail to enjoy a stay here.

The hippo pool, that is part of the hotel, is the star attraction. One can sit at the hippo pool bar, that is right next to the pool, sip beers and watch the huge hippos wallow and tussle in the pool. The antics are very amusing as they establish territory by passing wind and spreading their dung by vigorous tail movements! The Masai warriors, in their colourful tunics, provide additional colour and talking to them about their customs is interesting...not too sure about their tales of having to kill a lion before they could get married. The rooms are simple but tastefully decorated and have a nostalgic air about them. There is no fence around the hotel so animals can come into the hotel grounds and early morning before breakfast is a great time to see them. At night time the hippos wander near the hotel and one can hear them grunting outside the verandah...so keep your doors and windows well locked. Staff are friendly and are happy to escort you with torches from the main hotel reception and dining room to the guest rooms that are separate and arranged around an open area. The hotel lounge is relaxing with nice sofas around fireplaces that are lit in the cool evenings. Don't miss going through the hotel visitor / guest book as we discovered some entries by one talented guest who has left wonderful sketches of animals seen on safari. The meals were excellent with western and Indian dishes both of which were very tasty. The bar in the lounge area is also well stocked. There is a shop with souvenirs of good quality. The safari park is of course fantastic with thousands of wildebeest especially around the Mara river during July / August.

Room Tip: Best to keep windows and verandah doors firmly locked as animals do wander within the hotel grounds.

My girlfriends & I stayed here for 2 nights. This place is just amazing! Just make sure you lock your door when you leave, we saw a baboon trying to open one, we thought it was funny. The food is not that great. If you're into Indian food, then you will probably like it. I think they need to have a variety of food since most of the guests are Europeans & North Americans. We felt very safe & staff are friendly. I will highly recommend this place.
