“Fantastic luxury family safari in the heart of the Masai Mara”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 11, 2013

Wow - We spent 4 nights at the Mara Intrepids camp at the start of the summer holidays. This place is truly a fantastic luxury place to stay whilst on safari. To sum it my son said can we not give it 100 stars as a rating as that's what they deserved.

A few of the best bits:

Location - Perfect. Its right in the heart of the action with animals quite literally on your doorstep. Hippos were living in the river we could see from the tent and once you were outside the camp the animals were immediately there. Every day was different and you just never know what's round the next corner (in our case a rhino).

Drivers knowledge - Samson was our driver for the 9 game drives we had over the stay and was fantastic. He knew every inch of the mara and exactly where the best spots were for finding every different animal. Unlike other safari drivers we'd heard of (from other companies) he didn't just follow other jeeps as he usually had a much better idea of where to go. He was also brilliant with the kids and answered every question they could come up with. I wouldn't have anyone else :)

Food - Again fantastic, who'd expect 7 course dinners camping in the middle of the mara? Dinners were great but the highlight had to be the picnic breakfasts we had out on the drives, food as well as location were spot on.

Rooms (sorry tents) - We've camped a lot but never like this, much more like a luxury room that just happened to have canvas sides. The kids tents were huge, very luxurious, great views, comfy beds and the best service you could wish for. I've never stayed anywhere and be spoilt so much. Hot water bottles put in all the beds at night and woken up by a gentle 'Jambo' from Musa bearing hot coffee and hot chocolate for the kids.

Guest Service - All the staff on camp were so friendly, from King Henry at the bar to Evans the brilliant baboon scarer, they all made such an effort to make us and the kids feel welcome. The 'Chief' ran the kids club which my son loved and his nightly slideshows were not to be missed. Abi was our waitress and was very attentive, with great speedy service and made a fuss of everyone.

Stayed at the Intrepids end of July with the family and had a great time.

We were picked up at the nearby airport by John. He was our safari driver/guide throughout the stay. He was great, made sure we got to see everything we wanted and has very good knowledge on the animals and the area. We will never forget our dash across the Mara to see the black Rhino. We hope he is still there when we next visit as we will be asking for him.

We stayed in 2 tents near each other, rooms are great. Good beds and hot water and electricity during most of the day. Our room maid kept the tents clean. Small hiccup one morning when we had no water but this was addressed by the time we got back from safari

Food at the restraurant was excellent. Chef made a point of coming out to speak to everyone. Another special touch was that we had the same waiter throughout the stay. Julius was great fun. True professional and always having a laugh and a joke with us. This was a wedding anniversary trip for us and on our first evening the hotel gave us a great surprise. All the cooks and waiters came out of the kitchen singing swahili songs and had a big cake with candles. My wife was almost in tears.

Safari was breathtaking, thanks to John we managed to see a sunrise on the Mara, the big 5, a leopard kill, a hippo fight and alot more. Some photos on this review. We had the car to ourselves as there was 4 of us, I think this really helped us and John. I hope the management team look to continue to do this so families are together and the safari can be flexible and suited to that family. i.e. not sharing with other people

The management team all spoke to us at some point during our stay, so special mention to Stella, Steve and Edwin.

We came back with a great experience and will be returning to the Masai Mara and the Intrepids. I hope the Intrepids team continue to provide the same level of service as it makes the whole trip special.

Jambo to my friends at Mara intrepids.
wow words can not describe how my wife and I were treated during our stay for 4 nights.
we were meet by our guide Matthew(are you still there) and took us back to the camp no more then a 5 minute drive.
we were welcomed by Grace for refreshing cool drinks and a welcome talk.
then we were taken to our tent(no 16) this far exceeded on what we were expecting with the added bonus of overlooking the talek river we saw a few animals during our stay on the banks from our tent.

the food was outstanding with around 4/5 choice of options for each meal.
the drinks were very reasonable considering they have no competition.
we were served by Dennis and Abby who looked after us like royalty the same as all the other staff.
the manager Edwin asked each day what we had done and seen.
onto the game drives our guide Matthew went out of his way to find the big 5 which we lucky to see as well as the great migration (see photos) not a pretty sight if you are an animal lover but this is nature.
on the last day we still had not seen a cheetah Matthew seemed to drive for ages to find one. we went to lookout hill and he saw one in the distance with some cubs.
when we got near he said they had seen these a few days ago but 2 of the cubs had been lost/taken.
we were given an option one morning if we wanted to go out earlier and take breakfast with us, which was great as we spent around 5 hours out on a game drive, instead of going back to camp then out again.
on day 2 we spent over 4 hours near the main crossing point waiting for the wildebeest to cross the river, Matthew radioed to the camp and asked for someone to bring our lunch out instead of us leaving to go back to camp just in case the crossing took place.this is how they look after you some would say time up we have to go now.as it turned out they decided not to cross that day but went the day after.
one special moment was we were the first to spot a serval cat with her cub.
on our day we were due to leave we were told Matthew was unable to take us to the airstrip but Samson would take us as he was picking up some guests.
the airstrip near the camp was closed for repairs so we had to use Musiara airstrip which turned out to our advantage as we were able to see one of the 4 musketeers male lions Morani (see photo) charm & siena part of the marsh pride.
thank you all at Mara intrepids for looking after us so well and the kindness you all showed.
we will also have fond memories of our time seeing and spotting the animals.
special thanks to Matthew who made this special.

Mara Intrepids in perfectly situated for gave viewing. We saw many of our favorite sightings just within a 5 minute drive of the camp gates. It's a bit further to the main crossing point of the Mara River (approx 90 mins), but many things to see along the way. Was not a fan of the layout of this camp; felt very separated with a long walk to anything. Tented rooms were the least favorite of our entire trip; very small and our shower did not drain. Food was average. One highlight was the Masai who gave talks before dinner and was always milling around the camp ready to answer a question about the animals or culture. I loved this guy.

mara intrepids was fantastic, the rooms a long the river are superb!Amazing game drives with Tapen, who made sure that we spotted every Animal that we wanted to see.He his a first class guide and we will recommend him to our friends who are visiting in october.Compliments to the room steward who did every thing he can to ensure our room is tidy, clean and provide with hot water bottle every evenning.Otherwise the only negative part we can mention is the Restaurant,my british girlfriend was bitter about this, nobody to wait and sit people for lunch and dinner, wake up calls not done properly.According to the guest information, the Headwaiter is suppose to move around taking calls for everybody but thats not the case, for us it was done by three different people for 3 nights. The Headwaiter George was not honest, looks hungry for tips,we gave him tips for the waiters,100dollars but we confirmed that he never shared the money until we left the camp at 4.00pm in the afernoon, and gave him the night before? So please ask for me wether Julius and Daniel got the money if not that is a big shame!we wanted to ask George about this but he was busy carrying trays. So give him enough salary to avoid him grumbling with tips for the waiters. However, thanks to every member of staff for the hospitality!

Room Tip: rooms a long the river are the best!

My wife, our 15 year old daughter and I spent 4 days and 3 nights here in mid July.  The camp is situated on the bank of the Talek river, with luxurious tents set on solid foundations. Ammenities include wood floors, seperate shower and toilet, really comfortable beds. Wifi is available at the reception area, cell phones work fine with a tower nearby. Electricity is available almost all the time (off between midnight and 5 am).  The beds were turned down at night and a hot water bottle was placed in under the comforter.  Really special!!! So was the wake up call, where our room steward Gedion would come to the tent with hot coffee and tea, which we had ordered the night before.

We had an absolutely fantastic time here. The staff are superb. They were consistently warm, helpful, and really genuine. Abby and Francis were our waiters/tress, Both were always welcoming and friendly.  They remembered our names the first day.  Many of the staff are Maasai, who have grown up in this area, and they know it so well. The food was consistently good.

We have to mention our guide Samson. He has to be one of the very best guides in the business! His knowledge of the animals and their behaviour is astounding. He can see animals miles away, when they are just specks on the horizon, knowing immediately what they are, how many of them, and where they are going. Often, we would be the first vehicle at a particular viewing spot (with the best location), and others would follow. His love of the animals and the entire environment is obvious. He stopped the vehicle at one point to pick up a pop can that some bonehead had left behind. He is warm and funny, and we feel so lucky that he was our guide.Thank you, Samson.

We stayed two nights with our grandson as well as at 6 other lodges in Kenya and Tanzania. Mara Intrepids was the best experience of all. It is in the midst of a superb game viewing area. Sightings start as soon as one leaves and continue all day. We saw several animals that we did not see anywhere else. We also got better views of many animals we saw elsewhere.
Now to camp itself. Luxurious tents with all amenities. The best food we had while on safaris. Wonderful dinners. But don't miss the wonderful breakfast crepes with carmelized sugar.

The staff were friendly, very helpful and more than willing to make an extra effort. One noticed i was n't feeling well and arranged for the medic to see me.The medic quickly recognized my unfavorable reaction to my malaria medication and saved me much misery by switching to another.

All in all, an exceptional experience I wholeheartedly recommend.
