“Amazing experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 13, 2012

We stayed at Mara Intrepids 3 nights after 2 nights at Samburu Intrepids. The two camps are very similar , but according to us Samburu had more intimate atmosphere despite the number of tents which is the same, probably because in Mara visitors are more.

Masai Mara is a wonderful park: the heavy rain of the previous days made everything greener and even though the grass was very high and animals difficult to see, we were able to spot all the big five just in 1 day

The camp is very nice, tents are like rooms in a hotel , they are very clean and comfortable. You can find everything you need from the mosquito repellent for your skin to the mosquito spray for the bed net , to a torch and many amenities The shower is quite big and the inside of the tent is well lighted in the evening.
The staff is caring and helpful.( we had hot bottle water at night , which we appreciated very much as well as the nice wake up coffee in the tent ) - the last day we were allowed to check out at two when we had the flight to Mombasa because no tourist s were expected to occupy our tent.- so very kind of the management.

One evening we had problems with the water in the shower and the staff was very helpful and caring and solved the problem very quickly ( we imagine it may be difficult to manage water for all the showers in places like that!)
A special thanks goes to Edwin the waiter who took care of us during our staying: he was lovely and caring always ready to help, exactly like the girls at the reception ,Doriana, always cheerful and smiling and the Masai boy . The general atmosphere was very friendly !

We liked very much the show at the end of the year where the Masai children of a local school performed dances and songs : really lovely.

We were also very lucky because we were given Silan as a driver : especially in the muddy areas where it was very difficult to manage the situation – due to the heavy rains of the previous weeks- he proved to be very a good and safe driver and a precious source of information about animals. He showed a stunning attitude to find animals. We strongly recommend him as a driver.

Another tip is to have breakfast in the savannah staying out all morning instead of coming back for breakfast and go back on a safari later.

We have been on a good number of game drives in the past 6 years in South Africa, Namibia and Tanzania but we must say that the number of animals that can be seen here is absolutely outstanding .
In addition the views in the park are definitely stunning .
We highly recommend a safari balloon which, despite being quite expensive , it is absolutely worth doing.

Just 2 notations:
1-Other reviewers pointed out that many tents do not have a nice views: not all the tents actually have ; the camp is in the bush along the Talek river and this seems to be in contrast with the famous Mara great plains. Anyway also in the bush the atmosphere is quite nice.
The advantage of the camp is that it is 3 minutes drive from the air strip and this allows you to enjoy the safaris until the last minute the day of your departure

2-the camp provides additional activities to the safaris: one of them is sundowners ( a drink with a few canapés ) in a location not far from the camp with a beautiful view. As the 30th dec it was my birthday we wanted to celebrate it having it ; but we were told that this activity is available only for a minimum of four people so unless we paid for 4 we couldn’t have the chance to enjoy it.; we were only two and so we missed it- which we regret very much .

Last thing :
We knew that wildebeests and zebras had migrated to the Serengeti but we expected to see at least a few of them: on the contrary wildebeests and zebras were completely missing .

It was a pity but this is a good reason for us to come back to Mara Intrepids again!!

We always wanted to choose a place which is inside the Masai Mara and we were spot on with our choice of Mara Intrepids. We stayed here just before X-mas for 4 nights and found the stay truly blissful. You are right in the middle of the Masai Mara. The tents are aesthetically designed, well maintained (thanks to 'Jefferson & Evans') & located right next to the Talek river. The power is cut off between 12 midnight and 5 am; you can ask for an emergency lamp if reqd. The wake up calls are prompt so that you are not late for the morning game drives. The restaurant has a fixed menu but 'Chef Vincent & Abby' took good care of our taste buds by providing Indian veg food and special meals for our kid & infant. All staff at the hotel are extremely friendly and responsive.

The highlight of our stay was the game drive. We had an exclusive vehicle booked thru 'Big 5 tours' which gave us the flexibility to enjoy the wildlife. 'Maxwell', our guide was fantastic and very friendly. His knowledge of the reserve ensured that we sighted all the animals (Lions, Cheetah, Bison, Elephants, Leopard, Black Rhinos, Giraffe, Hyena, Jackal, Hippo, Zebra and many species of deer). You can opt to pack your b'fast / lunch and enjoy uninterrupted game drives.

As the drive from Nairobi to Mara is very tedious we opted to fly. The Air Kenya flight takes about 1 hr and makes about 4 stopovers at various air strips inside masai mara. These stopovers are decided just prior to the flight based on bookings. Be prepared for an hour's delay (our return flight from Mara to Nairobi was delayed due to last minute changes in the flight route).

Room Tip: Choose among Tents 1 to 6 if you wish to be away from the reception and common areas.

Having read through a lot of these reviews many of them already say what I was going to. We spent four days here in mid November and it was the trip of a lifetime. The safari was amazing and we saw everything apart from a Rhino. The highlight of the trip was arranging with our driver on one day to do a full day's safari, rather than three separate drives. We were out from 6.30am for almost 12 hours and were able to see much more of the area by not having to keep returning to camp. Our breakfasts and lunches were brought with us and we were able to enjoy these as picnics after being given the all clear by our driver to leave the car!

The staff and rooms at Mara Intrepids are fantastic and it was an experience being in a four poster bed inside a tent, listening to all the gentle noises outside. We found it got a bit chilly at night so the hot water bottles which are left in the beds while you're out eating dinner were very welcome! The wake up call with tea, coffee or fantastic hot chocolate also made it easier to get up after being woken so early!

Tips for anyone staying: bring warm clothing for early mornings and late evenings. It got pretty cold on the drives as the cars are open and although each car has blankets, it's better to have a fleece or light jacket with you. Definitely bring binoculars for the safari - even a small pair. The guide will have a pair you can borrow but it helps to have your own so the driver can use his for spotting the animals. Finally, if you visit a Masai village then be prepared to haggle on the prices of the stuff they're selling there. The place we visted wanted $20 per small wooden keyring as a starting price which seemed pricey, though apparently a lot of the money goes back to the local school.

I can't recommend this place highly enough to anyone thinking of visiting - we can't wait to come back and have promised ourselves that next time we'll be there to see the migration.

The Mara Intrepids Camp is located in the heart of the Masai Mara right at the Talek River. After landing at Ol Kiombo Airstrip we were picked-up in the Landrover by our guide James who showed us Masai Mara’s wildlife during the next three days. Mara Intrepids has 30 luxurious, beautiful decorated tents, mostly with Talek River view. The service is outstanding – from the wake-up call with fresh coffee or tea served at the tent, lunch and dinner in the open-air restaurant up to the hot-water bottle in the bed at night time. For lunch they usually offer a buffet while for dinner a menu is served. You have three game drives per day: at 6:30 am, at 10:30 am and at 3:30 pm. We always merged both morning game drives and went for a picnic in the savannah instead of breakfast in the camp. In the afternoon you can relax in front of your tent and watch hippos in the Talek River or hang out at the swimming pool. The camp is perfectly integrated into the natural environment, at dinner time there is sometimes even a bush baby visiting the restaurant. The variety of animals in the Masai Mara went far beyond our expectations. We even saw a lion kill, several lion prides, a cheetah kill and a cheetah with two cubs. Furthermore we had the chance to watch the leopard Olive, her daughter Bahati and her grown-up son. Thanks a lot to James and the whole Intrepids team who made this safari an once-in-a-lifetime experience for us. And that we didn’t see the rhino is a good reason to come back to Masai Mara and to the Mara Intrepids Camp…

Absolutely amazing! We saw about 70 lions in 1 week and many other game such as cheetahs, hyenas, zebras, elephants, etc. We have been on safaris in Botswana, Zambia, Kenya and Tansania. The Masai Mara was hands down my families' favorite due to the absence of crowds of any kind and an abundance wildlife, especially large game. We also liked that the reserve is protected so no hunting is allowed. Food at camp was great and tents were beautiful.

Mara intrepids was a wonderful way to see the park. Many of the other reviewers have touched on all the basic points, but there are a few highlights/tips to note.

1. Some tents are really far from the lodge. We stayed in a low-numbered tent and felt that it was a good walk to the main resort area. Since the tents are along the river, this makes sense, but someone who is mobility challenged may have issues.

2. The food was very good, though limited in selection. No drinks are included in the price, including sodas. Overall, no real complaints. We especially enjoyed the crepes prior to the afternoon safari.

3. The guides and drives were great, try at least one full-morning drive. Also, the hot air balloon ride was 100% worth the price (although it will take an entire morning).

4. The camp is fenced in, which gives you a false sense of security. The power is off in the camp from midnight to 5 a.m., and I wouldn't wander outside of the tent then.

5. Understandably, hot water only runs at certain times during the day (but can be arranged for off-hours). The water is VERY hard, and it is hard to lather the soap.

We were extremely impressed by the camp and would not hesitate to stay there again.

Room Tip: Tent #6-12 are closer to the main dining area.

Dear Guest,
I have taken note of the five points that you have raised. I take particular note of the waters being so hard and the distance of some tents when has some challenges with mobility. These will all be put to our Think Tank so we can continue reviewing them and seeing how to improve.
We are elated about the other good cooments raised and we appreciate that you took time to write to us.

We stayed at the Mara Intrepids for 4 nights on our honeymoon in November. It was the most fantastic experience and one we will always remember.

The accommodation at the Mara Intrepids is very luxurious whilst also maintaining the feel of being close to nature. The beds are very comfortable and all of the amenities well kept and of a high standard.

The food was always excellent. We chose to return to camp for breakfast each day and enjoyed a wonderful buffet cooked breakfast. Lunch was a buffet with a great selection of hot and cold food. Our first night dinner was also a buffet, apparantly as there was a very big group in, however the other nights the evening dinner was a very high standard sit-down affair which we enjoyed a lot more. (Not that the buffet was bad but it was nice to have a change for the third meal and the food served in the evenign meals was of a very high quality). Tom's service throughout was very friendly and he alwyas made sure we were well looked after, even carrying us some hot chocolate back to our tent at the end of dinner.

The game drives were what really made this trip so memorable. We were gently awoken by Gideon each morning with tea and cookies, making the 5.30 am start a little easier! Our thanks go to Samson, a wonderful and very knowledgable guide who seemed to have a knack of tracking down whatever we were looking for. He was also very good company and good fun over the 3 and a half days we spent with him. We were very lucky to see all of the 'big 5' several times over, including the elusive Rhino and Leopard. The 1500 photos we came home with after just 4 days are testament to the great variety we saw! The scenery as well is absolutely stunning and just the experience of bouncing over the plains in a 4x4 was great fun.

We would thoroughly recomemnd the Mara Intrepids and hope we will be able to return again one day.
