“Great night drives!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 10, 2014

Okavango Tours and Safaris booked Kicheche Bush Camp for us because of the opportunity for night drives which we enjoy so much – we certainly weren’t disappointed!! Our guide Francis was very experienced and knowledgeable and never failed to find interesting wildlife situations - by day as well as by night – for us to enjoy and photograph. The Kicheche vehicles are superbly set up for wildlife photography. The tent was excellent with great views and the food was very good indeed. Our thanks to Brendan, Val and their friendly and hard-working staff. We enjoyed our stay immensely.

Our many excellent wildlife sightings included (animals) cheetah, lion, leopard, buffalo, elephant, bushbaby (both greater and lesser galago), crocodile, bat-eared fox, mouse, terrapin, giraffe, various antelopes (hartebeest, dik dik, topi, eland, Defassa waterbuck, Grant’s gazelle, Thomson’s gazelle, impala, bushbuck), agama, yellow-winged acacia bat, hyena, olive baboon, white bearded wildebeest, zebra, skink, scrub hare, hippo, mantis, jackal, various mongoose (banded, dwarf, slender, white-tailed), vervet monkey, warthog, genet, spring hare, hyrax.

Among the more interesting birds were bare-faced go away bird, red cheeked cordon bleu, hamerkop, Abyssinian scimitarbill , Marabou stork, bee eaters (both little and Eurasian), rollers (lilac breasted, purple), white browed coucal, various eagles (including bataleur, tawny), green woodhoopoe, ostrich, Egyptian goose, kingfishers (grey headed, pied), Ruppel's long tailed starling, Caspian plover, secretarybird, nightjar, various vultures (African white backed, hooded, lappet faced, Ruppel's griffon), cisticola, helmeted guineafowl, buffalo weaver, crested francolin purple grenadier, silverbird , Temminck's courser, yellow fronted canary, shrikes (Northern, long tailed), augur buzzard, capped wheatear, emerald pigeon, scarlet chested sun bird.

And I'm sure there are others I haven’t remembered to list!! We enjoyed our stay very much.

An outstanding camp: great setting on the valley side with views to the plains to the south-west, spacious very comfortable accommodation in light, airy, well-furnished tents. With running H & C, well designed luggage/storage area: camping was never so grand. Excellent service, great food. One of the best camps we have stayed in: and then there is the almost exclusive game viewing in the outstanding Naboisho Conservancy.

For the best safari experience... Kicheche is the answer - fantastic guides, world class food, best accommodation

Brendan and Val, and the entire valley camp team are excellent. One of the best times to visit is October/ November. The game is great, great weather.... and the valley cam team, always there for you

Room Tip: All rooms are great, but tent No 6 has one of the best views

We went on Safari last August and although apprehensive as we did not know what to expect, especially that we had an 8 year old son and 11 year old daughter in tow, we could not have had a better experience! Perfectly advised and guided by Aardvark Safaris, we felt like the lucky few who miraculously found their way to Kicheche Valley Camp in Kenya's Masai Mara's Concervancy area. Rich in wildlife of all sorts and beautifully guided by our Masai guide Francis, all decked out in red Masai tribe clothing and an infectious smile, he welcomed us off our plane from Nairobi with the phrase 'You have the Best camp, the BEST camp!!!' and he was proven right!!!! From the outset we realized that we were in a special place with Val's warm reception and her husband Brandon fascinating historical knowledge and great conversation skills. The tent was luxurious with, in our case, a huge double bed in the middle and two single beds on either side. We never felt cramped or in each other's way as there was enough space for all! The wildlife was amazing, Francis's explanations would give any University professor a run for his money and the warmth exuded by all, be it our hosts, guide or staff at the camp made us feel like we were at a home away from home. Kicheche Valley camp is a 6 tent camp with a maximum capacity of 18 people. It tends to attract very well educated people which in turn leads to excellent conversations (masterfully guided by Val) during Lunch and Dinner which, as meals, were a pleasure to consume adding to the whole magical experience!
My children LOVED the whole experience and still talk about it and write about every chance they get at school. My daughter, who is 11, enjoyed the intelligent conversations offered during the meals, my son, who is 8 would have benefitted from a few electronic games in what is mainly an adult camp, but the Safari itself and his fondness for our guide Francis more then made up for it. Note to the ladies, you cannot use a hair dryer as the electricity is mostly solar and cannot give the strength a hair drier needs. Also, for some reason, the staff refuse to wash female underwear. Truly minor points, but good to know. Bring a conditioner for your hair as none is offered, otherwise I am glad to say that the shower is within the tent and it is MARVELOUS with shampoo, soaps and an unbelievably strong water gush. The toilet is also part of the tent, behind the main bed, in an intelligently designed 'Toilet area'. All of it very comfortable and beautifully laid out. I wish everyone the magic we encountered at Kicheche Valley Camp, a 4 day stay which in length was also perfect! Final note: It DOES get VERY cold, and it does eventually warm up by mid-day, SO pack layers from T-Shirts to Thermals, but Thermals are a must!

Room Tip: Kicheche Valley Camp staff know what they are doing. Because we had children with us, they gave us t...

Could not have had a more perfect holiday w/Val and Brendan as our warm and gracious hosts. Food was excellent - lots of fresh fruit and veg, delicious freshly baked breads and desserts. Rooms and common areas are large and tastefully appointed w/earth-tones furnishings and bathrooms w/fresh, herbal-smelling toiletry products. Privacy on your own spacious veranda is there if you want it but the communal area is cosy-feeling and inviting and makes you want to linger. We were traveling w/ 2 children ages 6 and 9, and the staff - Charles, Dominick, to name just a couple of individuals - went above and beyond to ensure that they were always happy. Our guide, Jonathan, was incredible. Not the chatty type, this man could see animals a mile away with his hawk-like vision. His knowledge of the Mara's flora and fauna would rival that of any wildlife biologist or botanist. Needless to say, we were in very good hands at Kicheche Valley Camp.

Room Tip: Tents 1,2,3 are to the left of the common dining/lounge area and 4,5,6 are to the right (in that ord...

Very well looked after by Val and Brendan and all the staff, wonderful tents, great food.

Set overlooking a beautiful valley with wildlife wandering though it. The whole conservancy has many different types of varied and attractive scenery and plenty of wildlife. We saw lions, cheetah, leopard, buffalo, wildebeast, jackals, elephants, giraffe, warthogs, hyena and many different antelope. Plenty of birds - including hamerkop, kingfishers, verreauxs eagle owl, brown snake eagle and various types of vultures.

Really enjoyed the guided walk where we saw a leopard kill up a tree, leopard tortoise, frog and stick insects.

For relaxation - Selma does an excellent massage!

Room Tip: All the tents are great with good views

This camp is wonderful, we celebrated the first part of our honeymoon and could not have had a better time. The hosts are the most lovely people and ensure you have a great stay. The accommodation is of a very high standard, the staff are all fantastic and the food is some of the best I have ever eaten, as good as you would find in many high end restaurants. If you are going on Safari I highly recommend this camp, there is nothing that wasn’t perfect…oh and you see animals too!
