“"All expectations exceeded"”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 12, 2013

Having recently returned from a 4 night stay at Ol Moran on 7th January we need to share our views and also respond to a scathing review from a previous visitor. Before our visit, we actually took the time to check the Ol Moran website ( lets assume internet is available in Europe) to be clear on the accommodation and facilities available - the description "tented camp" along with the rugged roads leading to Ol Moran, suggested to us that there was no 5 star oasis at the end of the path. The word " tent " gave us reason not to expect an expansive 3 bedroom apartment with Van Gogh's dangling from the wall. Did i mention that we checked the website before our visit......therefore we were aware of the electricity and hot water time schedules and consequently were remarkably able to equip ourselves with a torch and shower (together - as 2 people fit comfortably ) within the allocated times. The surrounding grounds were well groomed, and a lion attack on cattle beyond the fence, some 150 mtrs from our tent, gave us a more than adequate feeling of "camping in the bush". The food was of very good quality, and never lacked quantity - additionally we found by asking the staff about the dish gave the opportunity to converse with them to mutual benefit. Overall, in our opinion, Ol Moran more than met our expectations - it certainly was better than identical camps in Australia (actually, we don't have lions, zebras, elephants etc) while sadly, it apparently falls short of identical camps in europe. Well done to the friendly staff of Ol Moran - your efforts were appreciated, and the camp will be strongly recommended to others. Rob and Anne, Australia.

A party of 13 of us visited Ol-moran over New Years Eve and couldn't wait for the whole experience to be over. As a party we have been on safari and stayed in numerous other camps and lodges around the area and Ol-moran was the worst camp we have ever been too. This was our first visit to Ol-moran and we will NEVER be going back. I assume that the positive reviews below are from people who have not been to other camps before in the area so do not know how amazing the accommodation, service and entertainment in the area can be!

1. Accommodation - having stayed in a number of tented camps, the tents provided at Ol-moran are the most basic tents we had ever seen. The tents are small, cramped, dark and dingy and there is no decoration what so ever inside the camp - so the room is very un-appealing with various marks on the floors and walls. The bathroom is even worse and the shower area incredibly small. As expected there was limited times for hot water but the hot water was a dribble of luke warm water which was awful after a long day of safari.

2. Staff - none of the staff had a clue what was going on (especially the female manager) and most were very unhelpful when we asked questions. We had to request a torch on numerous occasions as lights go out at 10.30pm with no provisions of torches or matches provided - this is unheard of at other camps. Secondly there were no umbrellas so we all got soaked going back to our tents every day afternoon rain.

3. Food - the food at Ol Moran did have a bit of flavour but there is very limited choice and most times the food was not properly hot. Secondly there were no food labels so we had NO idea what was being served. One night we were told the meat was goat by one staff member and the other staff member said it was impala! The chefs did seem friendly though and accommodating when requesting extra items. However the tea and coffee served before PM game drives was awful, milk was constantly running out and no biscuits/sweets were served - again unheard of in all other camps

4. Entertainment - we had to pay a supplement as we were in the camp over New Years and it was a birthday of a party member travelling. When we asked if there were any matches or candles we were greeted with confused faces and the entertainment provided for New Years (30 min maasi dance show at 8.30 pm) was good but the camp lacked any atmosphere what so ever and all 13 of us huddled in our small dark and dingy tents to celebrate the New Year.

5. Location - being located outside the actual National park itself you do not experience the true feeling of camping in the bush and it adds time to access the great wildlife deep inside the park.

Luckily we had a good game drive but we couldn't wait to get back home to Nairobi. It was such a shame and we were all gutted as it was a pricey trip.

Room Tip: though a small tented camp, the tents and especially the beds are really nice with a bathroom connect...

After 2 days at Lake Nakuru it was time for Masai Mare. The camp is just a 5 minutes drive from the entrance to the park, it is a small-tented camp but the tent and beds was nice, the bathroom is a small building in connection with the tent, this work all right. The restaurant is not big and the buffet is simple, but everything was of good standard. When the generator closes 22:00 it is quite fantastic to fall asleep to all the sounds of the savannah. The Ol-Moran is a basic camp giving a lot of value for the money.

This camp site is truly a wonderful experience of living close to nature but also feeling safe. The service is excellent, nothing is too much trouble and there is a friendly feel to the place.
The food was the best food experienced on my whole trip being fresh and tasty.
Thankyou for the experience :))

We visited Masai Mara and stayed 2 nights (September 4th and 5th) in Ol Moran tented camp. The first night dinnerbuffet was cold. The staff was serving us in wintercoats. Nice camp, basic tents, good beds, clean place.

This location is a 10 minutes drive from the Masai Mara national park. The camp works with a generator wich means that you only have electricity during the evening hours from 7 till 11 pm and in the morning from 6 or 7 till 9 am. The tents are very basic but clean. The meals are in buffet, you do not have a lot of choice but the quality is good. The staff is very helpfull and friendly. When we sat on the balcony from our tent we saw a baboon walking wich makes this tented camp a little bit more special.
