“Great Value, except rooms too hot at night”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 9, 2012

We didn't plan to stay here but after our booking fell through at another hotel, we were recommended to check this place out. We were immediately glad about the overbooking because the Sunsail turned out to be far better value than our original hotel. The double rooms were big and bright with en-suite bathrooms for 3000 KSh. The hotel is located right on the waterfront and with a big balcony overlooking the main street it was great for unobtrusive people watching. There were a number of restaurants right beside it and we felt like we were in the heart of Lamu. The rooms themselves were attractive with big comfy beds. Bathroom was clean although we never got more than tepid water. Breakfast was included and fairly extensive with a couple choices plus toast, fresh fruit, juice and tea/coffee. The only major detractor to this place was that the ceiling fans were not very powerful (at least not enough to get through the mosquito nets) and hence the rooms would get very very hot at night. We found this in both our room and our friends room with different layouts. In the end, we'd leave our window and door open to try and get some air circulation and even then the heat would sometimes prevent us from sleeping. If it hadn't been for that, we probably would have loved this place and would be able to unconditionally recommend it. But given how poorly we slept, the whole experience was rather average.

Stayed at the Sunsail Hotel on 10 and 11 June 2011, located about 2 minutes walk from the main Lamu Town jetty on the waterfront (turn left off the jetty). Walked in off the street and had no trouble getting a room. Paid KES2,500 (June is the low season) per night for two people in a twin room that also had a single bed. Price included breakfast. Rooms were basic but clean with nets and a private bathroom. Breakfast was served on the main balcony overlooking the water. Dinner and drinks (not alcohol) also available. Staff were helpful, friendly and provided information about things to do and where to go. Was a good base for exploring Lamu Town and recommended for those on a mid-range budget.

A locally owned muslim hotel right on the seafront - so no alcohol allowed inside. A great verandah to sit on and watch the waterfront. Nice rooms with fans and showers/toilets. Very secure and freindly. All for about £15 per person per night B&B. I have stayed there about twelve times.
