“Lamu Taxi”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 14, 2013

Lamu old Town is an extraordinary place, the only form of transport are donkeys with only one or two cars on the whole island. The market is fibrant and full of exotic produce. You have to visit the meat and fish market its an eye opener!

“Escape from the modern world”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 31, 2013

Get rid of your Macbook, iPad and Blackberry - this is the kind of place you walk around in your tank top, shorts and flip flops and be at one with nature and old civilization. It is like a journey back into an age of simplicity. Hotels are simple, food can be had at tiny restaurants mostly specializing in local fare and the cobblestone streets are narrow, and dark albeit relatively clean. If you really want to do some soul searching and to "get away from the world" this is the place to do it.

“14th Century World Heritage Site with Burkhas and Donkeys”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 18, 2013

Lamu Town on Lamu Island is a walk back in time. The women are covered in their burkhas and the only mode of transport is by foot, donkey or boat. The cobble stone streets are littered with donkey droppings so most homes have a place to wash your feet before going inside. Many buildings are made of coral block with magnificent carved wooden doors. You'll be greeted at the dock by men who will try to carry your bags or give you tours as well as the stray cats who are probably more populous than people. When the mosques aren't filled at times of prayer the narrow streets are filled with people busily moving about to places unknown.

There are some shops to purchase legitimate antique African art as well as fine modern creations along with the typical cheap tourist art and souvenirs. A few days in Lamu Town is probably enough to get a feel for the history and culture of the place. If you want to spend time on the beach walk over to Shela Beach. If you are really lucky and want a more relaxing experience, find a way to get to Kizingoni beach--about 30 minutes by boat. You'll be nearly alone.
