“Delicious!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 9, 2012

The Moonrise Restaurant has an elegant and cozy terrace with sea view. It offers great seafood and refined European cuisine with African and Asian cooking influences. The service is excellent and the hosts are charming. This place is definitely my favorite for a nice lunch or dinner in Lamu.

“Exquisite!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 1, 2012

Moonrise restaurant is one of the finest places to eat in Lamu. The restaurant overlooks the sea, white linen is on the tables, there are colorful pillows and candle light. The food is refined, but not too complicated, it’s honest and fresh. You can eat à la carte, or let the chef put together a little menu. The service is smooth and the staff is friendly. It is not expensive and some excellent wines are available. Try the cinnamon ice-cream - it is just delicious! Peponi restaurant offers a nice change, but the Moonrise restaurant is definitely your best choice.

“very good”

this is the Lamu House Hotel restaurant , but open for all. a fantastic terrace with views over the water , candel light atmosphere and the most fantastic sea food you will eat in Lamu.
we tried some others and they are not bad , but go for the white linen table cloths , great music without forgetting to mention the wine list. an absolute treat is the beers served is ice buckets ; the coolest ever had.

For Lamu upmarket , for european standards very afortable.
if you like good food , perfect service and a large choice; this is your place.
Probably the best place were you will eat during your stay in Kenya
ok it is not the cheapest place , and maybe not 'local' enough , but the chef knows what he is doing and the host is a charming guy.

“They couldn't have greater staff if they tried.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 18, 2011

There are really only two places to eat in Lamu, here at Moonrise Restaurant (which is conveniently located on the verandah of the Lamu House Hotel) or the snack department over in the Big Shop on Main Street. But a shop even as valiant as the Big Shop can never hope to be as delightful as the food and fine company of Frank, whose self-professed dream it was to open a fantastic restaurant in Africa. And that´s just what he did. He and his able staff have consistently pleased Lamu palates for two years now, offering such fine standards as white snapper carpaccio with ground nuts and peppercorns, Betty´s famous shrimp soup, aromatic ginger crab, a mouth-watering tuna steak seared just so, crispy calamari tempura and if travelling with a child, the best chicken fingers you could wish for this side of the equator. The view from the verandah is fantastic on moonlit nights, during the day, a strong black cup of Kenia coffee or a glass of chilled Pinot Grigio enables one to while away hours just watching the world go by. Much love has gone into this place and into the preparation of the food, which I must say is second to none in all of East Africa.
