This is one of the best place we have ever been!. What makes "The Majlis" so exceptional is just not the superb location, exquisite food and fine, supreme decoration is the upstanding professional quality of the team working there! we felt at home!

Thank you Federico, Stefano, Katana, Evelyn, Nelson, Mwamuye, Chome and Mangi!

Thank you for making our stay so special.

I have finally found my “Kenyan Paradise”. I found out about the Majlis by chance and it was the luckiest thing that has happened to me in a very long time. I have been working/living in an African War Zone for some time now and needed a place to relax and clear my head so I can get back to normal again. My first visit I was a bit frazzled from the months before and they took amazing care of me until I slowly got back to my “normal” self again.

What I found was this beautiful hidden “Oasis” away from all the horrors of the world where from the minute you arrive, everyone from the staff to the owners takes you in as family and make sure that your visit is as wonderful as you want it to be. And for those that love to work out the 2 owners (and staff workers) even have a “boot camp” of sorts that works with you on the many many fun activities that the resort has to offer. Never makes you do anything you don’t want to but they are a great source of encouragement. Plus they have every fun activity you can imagine, swimming with dolphins, safaris, trips to other islands of interest along with many many other activities that will keep you and your children (should you decide to bring them) entertained the entire time.

There are so many amazing things about this resort that will impress you from the architecture, service, cleanlyness, amazing food cooked by a wonderfully trained chef, not to mention the absolutely beauty of the hotel, island, ocean and sunsets.

This is a place that I will be coming to as often as possible with family and friends so they can experience the absolute life changing experience that I have while staying there. An in case you are wondering, no I didn’t want to leave.. it is a little piece of heaven that I have found and would stay there as long as I could time and time again... but I have to work to pay for it which is unfortunate.

This is the first blog I think I have ever written, but the Majlis is worth it. In the short time that I was there I have made some long lasting friends and the owners are just the friendliness warmest people that you could meet.. not to mention spending a while with them at the bar will have you on the floor laughing by the end of the night.

So in conslusion, if you are on the break of a nervous, come on down,, it will fix you better than anyone could have.

Room Tip: Go, forget the outside world and just relax and enjoy ourself. And do your best to completely disco...

This hotel is probably the finest in the whole of East Africa and beyond. The setting and facilities were superb. The pools were wonderful. The food and staff were excellent too. To say that this hotel was ***** does it no service, it was far beyond that and more. Nothing was too much trouble.
Even the furniture was was worthy of note. Each piece appeared to be unique and had been made on site and was of the finest standard. These small pieces of detail are the cornerstone of such an hotel and go towards making it a great hotel. If you have the chance to avail yourself of such an experience go and stay at the Majlis for a truly memorable experience.

Room Tip: All rooms are fabulous and all have air conditioning.

My wife and I stayed at the Majlis for a week in January 2014. The hotel and staff are outstanding and they go the extra mile to make your stay truly memorable from arranging bespoke excursions, gladly preparing personal dining requests, to whatever. The rooms are fabulous and the food mouth-watering. Being located on Manda gives you the best of all worlds with bustling Shela and Lamu 5 minutes away by boat, whilst the Majlis remains your quiet oasis. This is the third hotel we have stayed at on Lamu, and is the best by some margin.

It was a busy year - two very tired adults and one very active four year old arrive at the Majlis for the Christmas break. We could not have chosen better. Casual elegance and excellent service. The hotel is on the beach and has two pools. The only reason to wear shoes is that the sand gets hot during the day! The only discordant note was that of a four year old being told that he could not eat in the pool, and would have to get out on occasion. You can do as much or a little as you want here, and the food is quite frankly amazing. Quite Italian influenced with a twist of Swahili, but then that was one of our reasons for choosing to stay here.

Thank you to Stefano, Fredrico, Evelyn (now proud girlfriend to a four year old!), Katana, Nelson, Omar, Menza, James, "Captain" Charlie and all the rest.

Room Tip: No. 14 has a double bed and a semi-separated area with a single bed. Perfect for our needs and allo...

The Majlis is in a uniquely beautiful location and is a classic looking hotel. The Majlis does have one of the best ‘Sunset Bars’ in Kenya. The rooms are large (for sunsets ask for #11) and it is safe & quiet. All the rooms have A/C and mine had a great house steward named ‘Pascal’. That said, there were significant problems that should not occur when you pay $500+ a night for your room. Issues: We arrived at the local airport with no one meeting us. I had to go through the crowds outside of the airport asking if anyone was from the Majlis. Finally, I found a man in an old plain T-shirt who answered. He did not know our names but said he was from the Majlis. I made him call get our names and identify himself. He called and confirmed our names. The small airport emptied out while we waited – not a good way to started our stay. Then, we were without internet for a day and a half because we were given the wrong password. We thought it was our computer or the signal. By chance we mentioned this to our house steward ‘Pascal’ and he sought out his friend who figured out the error – “sorry mister they left out a letter”. There are other smaller issue (restaurant service and finally billing) but the most irritating is that everything at Majlis is about money. When you arrive you are in the middle of nowhere, on an island that looks across to Lamu and you are captive to the hotel … unless you pay. Just to across to Lamu is $40. They give you activity sheet with 21 prices list and besides the swimming pool and bar there is not much to do and nowhere to go that isn’t about $$$. Snorkeling is $210, Fishing, Boat rental ½ day $165, reef fishing $210 , ½ day deep-sea $700, etc. Make sure you understand that only a few things are included (kayak, tubing, etc) but really you are there and nowhere else - unless you are a serious swimmer. In short: This property could be worth the price but they have a way to go. Conditionally recommended.

We welcome reviews that represent the truth and are constructive, not those that are used to threaten the property to get discounts on everything. Our room & activity rates are lower than what is stated. The staff at The Majlis works 24/7 to ensure the best experience to its guests. We invite prospective guests to read other reviews to get a full understanding of the property.
