“A Truly Relaxing Beach Front Property”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 13, 2013

This hotel had a fabulous eclectic interiors with each property entering into a communal area that is furnished comfortably - as if you were in your lounge. The bedrooms were clean with crisp sheets and left with beautiful flowers and towel art each day. The staff were so helpful and caring, that nothing was too much trouble. Evelyn was a star and made our stay memorable. The staff were happy to show us all areas at the hotel and take care of our needs especially with activities such as canoeing, lasers e.t.c Manda Toto is a great trip to snorkel and see the beautiful fish. Thanks Charlie. The pool bar is unique and the ambience of this place is geared to rest and relaxation with two pools to choose from. The views were beautiful across to Shella Beach with great sunsets each evening. The beach is quiet and no beach boys selling! Without any prompt the staff kept us guessing on our dining location from ground floor to 1st floor dining and also fire with candle light on the beach, even though this must have been extra work for them. The Chef Kenneth cooks the meanest Swahili Curry and pancakes/crepes that melt in your mouth. Lemmy and the waiters were attentive and very friendly and happy to chat on a range of subjects or leave you to your privacy. We will definitely make every effort to return.
Thank you Evelyn, Freddy and team.

Room Tip: Sea view for Sunsets

To stay at the Majlis Resort is like taking part of a TV documentary about a paradise at the end of the world which is wonderful as well as unaccessible. But on Manda Island you get the chance to check in the paradise. The word "Majlis" means the room, where pepole come together. And the Majlis is definitely a good place to come together. From the very first moment you got a homelike feeling. It's more like visiting a good friend instead of stayin at a hotel. The way the different buildings, the lobbies (more like living rooms) and its rooms (e.g. the furniture or the decoration) are designed is a symbol for the love and the effort the Majlis team put into this resort. Our room was spacious (with two balconies), comfortable and absolutely clean. The stuff (from the gardener to the captain, from the waitress to the roomservice) were very obliging and pleasant. First of all the management stuff were taking care about us in a lovely way and they fullfilled our desires at every time. We had a boat trip with the Dhau, a beach dinner, a totaly relaxing massage, a trip with the kayak throu the mangrove forest - and we enjoyed it to the fullest. Most of all we enjoyed the delicious food (every meal was a manifestion of delicacy) and the relaxing atmosphere overall, which was the perfekt finish of our safari trip throu Kenya. We absolutely recommend this resort.

Room Tip: Perfect view in the first floor!

This hotel is very nice. The staff is extremely friendly. I feel like I have to preface my review with this because the hotel did nothing wrong, it just was not our style. We booked our Kenya trip through a travel agent and they were WONDERFUL in recommending the right safari camps for our trip - ones with a local feel and felt more like a family. We were then in a little bit of "culture shock" when we arrived at the Majlis because it was very much a highend hotel. There are a lot of things to do, but they will definitely cost you. I would not expect to snorkel/swim from the hotels beach. There is a retaining wall due to beach erosion so you will have sand up above and then need to walk down the retaining wall to swim, but in that area boats are coming and going on a fairly regular basis and not good quality for snorkeling. We ended up going snorkeling on our 2nd day there (we only stayed 3) and it was a great experience. They took us to Manda Toto where we saw tons of fish, coral, a sea turtle and sting ray. One of the better snorkeling experiences we've had. Our boat captain even caught a fish that we ate for lunch. Very yummy!

It's my understanding that several famous people have stayed here and that would make sense based on the "highend-ness" feel to the place. If that's your travel style then you will LOVE this hotel. Again, great staff, good food, nice hotel and we felt secure.

If you're looking for a peaceful escape from the busy life of today's metropoles, The Majlis should be your choice. Perfect to hang out with friends, as a romantic couple destination or to hide from the world even as a single traveller. The service is simply amazing and the staff is bending over backwards to fulfill your wishes while respecting your privacy if needed. I was not the easiest guest as I was a little bit sick and moody but their positive attitude and the beautiful setting here made it impossible to stay grumpy :) The beautiful location makes it easy just to be lazy and to relax at the beach but there is also lots to do and to discover if you are the more active type. You should love boats though as there is only little movement other than via boat. On the other hand that gives you the advantage of seeing the beautiful sunset every evening while the hotels on the other side of the channel like in Shela village only see the sunrise in the morning - at a time when I prefer to enjoy the luxury of sleeping in :) And last but not least the food is delicious and based on what the ocean has to offer everyday. Enjoy your stay - I for sure did!

Landing at Manda Airstrip, it is immediately apparent that this is a place of peace, quiet, and appreciation of nature and life. Speedboat transfer to the hotel across the bay brought us to land on the beach to an enchanting villa on the shore - there is but a simple porch as the entrance to this amazing lap of luxury. Checking in was a simple affair, rooms incredibly well sized and appointed with A/C, Fan, Kikoy Towels and all other amenities expected of a 5-star resort coupled with creative presentation.
Fresh seafood and healthy but tasty meals at Majlis meant we ate to our hearts content while avoiding the extra holiday weight. A wide variety of cocktails, sheesha and chilled madafu (coconuts) added that extra touch.
Staff were very attentive to bring round towels to whichever pool you wanted and a tasty snack menu keeps the hunger at bay after swimming.
Would recommend learning how to Wakeboard/WaterSki with the instructors who were very positive and encouraging as well as the Sunset Dhow cruise with a cocktail of your choice onboard.
A place that has far exceeded my expectations and is definately due a return visit!

Room Tip: All the rooms are very well appointed - some rooms face the inside of the island however you shouldn...

This is a luxurious resort set on a beautiful island.

The setting of the resort is unique. It is located right on a beautiful golden sandy beach facing the sea. The design has an ancient traditional feel and all the pillars and the doors are carved with ornamental designs.

There is plenty of space within the resort for privacy and relaxation. The terrace bar has an amazing view and it’s the perfect place to meet other guests and enjoy the sunset whilst having a drink.

The interior of the rooms is gorgeous and you will definitely want to take pictures of it. The villas provide ample space and modern comfort all combined with an ancient charm.

The staff could not be any better and they really made my stay special. From the moment I arrived I felt welcomed and well looked after. They were genuinely friendly, polite, never intrusive and always willing to make my time there as pleasant as possible. One of the best I have come across in my travels.

The food was excellent! The cuisine is traditional combined with a modern twist. The ingredients were very fresh (fish was superb!) and the presentation was always to a high standard.

There are lots of fun activities on offer in the resort to suit all tastes. I personally enjoyed the fishing trip in the dhow sailing boat as well as the popular excursions around the island by mountain bike with Katana.

I have travelled extensively and this is one of the best and most unique resorts I have stayed in. The setting is gorgeous and I had everything I needed to relax and unwind. This, along with the warm hospitality, great food and plenty of fun activities, means that I'm already looking forward to going back very soon!

This place is a piece of art: greatly decorated and designed, the resort includes many confortable and quiet rooms, very large and practically on the beach! All amenities are included. Also, for families there are connecting or double rooms. Not to mention the unbelievable Royal Suite.
Food is superb: a true mixture of local and haute cuisine.
Service is unique, with friendly and numerous staff.
Also beautiful garden, incredible pools (2!), massage and many activities (beach, sea, mountain bikes, ...). Absolute must: the sunset drinks on the terrace bar or on the dhow boat.
Last but not least, the entire resort is eco-friendly.
I would recommend this place both for families and couples, including business off-site meetings. Of course, perfect if you want to rejuvinate mixing nature and luxury.

Room Tip: The Royal Suite is of course unique - otherwise room number 3 or 21
