“Idyllic, design hotel, the Majlis to the rescue”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 1, 2011

We stayed with the Majlis for 3 nights. Our stay was wonderful. The hotel has a sharp eye for art and design, gourmet dining, beautiful accommodations, and an extremely attentive staff. We could not finds any faults in our stay.

But to top it all off, on the day of our departure, our flight with fly 540 was suddenly cancelled (for no obvious reason) leaving us stranded on the dock at night near the airport. Fly 540 threatened to put us up in a hole in the wall hotel in Lamu. We were able to contact the Majlis through a local police officer, and the hotel returned to collect us and other guests, and allowed us to stay the night until the next available flight in the morning. I don't know what we would have done without Stefano, Peris, Evelyn, and the rest of the hotel staff. Its treating your guest like special persons that really sets this hotel apart.

Room Tip: Choose a bright room with easy access to the pool.

Living in Nairobi, we go to Lamu about once a year - and this time had decided to try out the Majlis on Manda right across from our usual spot Peponi in Shella. Then of course, school break was only a few weeks after the incidents on Kiwayu, on Manda, and up in the refugee camp next to the Somali border.

After having spoken to Stefano (Moccia, owner manager of Majlis), to various security units and intelligence experts, we felt assured security had been upgraded to a point where no rational commercial kidnapper or ideological terrorist (and these are soft target unsophisticated cowards) would try another attempt. Upon arrival - all promised security arrangement were as we had been told - including armed police right outside both Majlis and Peponi across the canal.

Thus, we had a fantastic vacation, because Majlis is extraordinary. If Peponi is all charm, Majlis has larger and better rooms, better pools and facilities, equally good staff and service, and a great sunset. It is still not fully finished (the beach was being "repaired") but soon there. The only two minor issues would be food, that is good but not great, and prices for extracurricular activities. 50 Euro for a massage is outrageous by local standards - as is Euro 30 for rountrip to Lamu town.

But overall, a great and safe vacation

Room Tip: Fantastic family rooms

We stayed for 7 nights at the Majlis after doing safari at the Maasai Mara. We were met at the airport by the Majlis staff and then wisked off to the hotel via speedboat. Pulling up the hotel looks amazing. We opted to change to a different room (as our first room was on the ground floor) and this was no problem for Evelyn. Our second room was massive, it included a second bedroom, walk in shower and a sun terrace almost as big as the main bedroom again. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are all take in the hotel restaurant and the ala carte menu changes for most meals. Chatting to the owner (Federico) you can see how much planning and detail has gone into the hotel and it really shows. Finally the staff were amazing, friendly and really made the resort. Could not fault it at all.

Room Tip: Some ground floor rooms open right onto the beach

AMAZING.....and that is not even a strong enough word to describe this gem! The pictures do not do this place justice and the service is second to none! The Majlis staff took such good care of us that we felt like royalty! They became family to us! We are from the USA and since my husband works in Africa we thought it would be a great place to vacation. This being my first time out of the U.S. it was more than I could ever imagine! ALL the rooms are decorated in such exquisite taste that there is not one room that out does the other. They are all beautiful! We highly recommend the Royal Suite!!! The food deliciously enticing and servings were very generous. (The Italian dishes were my favorite)

Thank you to our server/waiter Ruben especially for our 8am Capacchino deliveries to get us started off right each morning! Peris and Evelyn are there to greet you from the plane to the boat ride back to the Majis! Super nice, friendly and always there to meet any of your request! Both pools are awesome and the bartendars can serve up a drink like none other! Try the Majlis Special, the Mojito and my favorite Old Pal! You won't be disappointed! Thank you to Rodgers, Mangi, Jefwa, Philamon and the rest of the bar gang! Be sure to take advantage of the upstairs night bar. We went there every night for good conversation, good music and drinks before dinner.

If you are looking to relax, reconnect and rejuvenate then the MAJLIS is the place to be!

Finally, to our host and owner of the Majlis-Federico! Your service is impeccable! You and your staff made Dan and I feel like we were the most important people at the Majlis. We can not thank you enough for making our 11 day stay the most memorable vacation we have ever been on. We are looking forward to our next stay at the Majlis!!

Kindest Regards, Daniel and Joy from Texas!

Room Tip: There is not a bad room in the whole place! The Royal Suite is the way to go!!!

We came to the Majlis only by chance because we were so miserable in another well named hotel in Lamu. Coming off a very long and luxurious Safari in Tanzania we were in need of a much needed "beach vacation"
From the moment we were greeted at our boat by their amazing staff and stepped on to the softest sand, we were in heaven!
The room was spacious and clean. But, most importantly, they had air conditioning (a rarity on this island). A creature comfort we find hard living without! especially with all the mosquitos in the evening.
The food was superb and there homemade pizzas and pastas could rival any good restaurant in Italy.
But, what separated this hotel from the rest was Federico one of the two brothers that own the Majlis. He makes it a priority for everyone in the Majlis feel like they are at "home".
I would recommend this hotel to anyone who wants to vacation on the most beautiful African beach, to be surrounded by total luxury, and truly wonderful people.

From the first moment we were in touch with the staff of Majlis, they were professional, pleasant and accommodating. We thought about staying just for one night as a treat to ourselves but ended up staying for 8 nights (our entire time in Lamu). The service was fantastic and the hotel itself was incredible. We felt so welcomed and personally cared for...all the staff knew our names and we got to know them, the owners, the chefs. We even attended a Swahili wedding of one of the staff members. I have sent friends looking for a vacation in a special place to Majlis, and none have been disappointed--rather, they couldn't say enough. Granted, it has a few shortcomings like any place I have ever been (the musical selection could have used a bit more variety, and the food was great some nights and subpar others) but overall it is a definite two thumbs up. The Majlis provides a great mix of relaxation and culture with Old Town just a short boat ride away. Next time we're in the neighborhood, we'll be back for a visit. I recommend you splurge a bit, you'll be glad you did!

I just got back from a 3 night stay at The Majlis ad I just had to get on Trip Advisor and post my comments straight away!

What an incredible place.... beautiful and very clean rooms, delicious food, very attentive and personal service and was totally worth every penny spent. 3 nights here are total bliss.

I would definitely visit again and considering that it took me 14 hrs of travel time to get there and back again that's really saying something :)

Simply put:- BOOK WITHOUT HESITATION...!!

Room Tip: upgrades to Junior suite is worth it as you get balconies...
