“Just as advertised”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 5, 2013

The Country Lodge is a quiet hotel in a quiet part of Nairobi where you can get very good value for your money. This is in fact the typical no-frills hotel that allows people to lodge in a clean, secure and reasonably comfortable hotel for around €100 each day, breakfast and internet included.
The staff of the Country Lodge is professional and friendly, ready to take care of your needs and attentive towards a guest's requests.
The room itself was quite unremarkable and small in size, with less than adequate closet space for me, since I was travelling with two large suitcases, one of which was in fact untouched during my 17 days stay. Breakfast provided all in all a good number of choices and started early in the morning, so even in case of early appointments/meetings you still have time to grab a bite and go. Internet was generally good, with reasonable speed and solid connection both in my room and the lobby area. The hotel experienced occasional but annoying blackouts during my stay. There is no restaurant in the Country Lodge, but the beautiful sister hotel Fairview, separated by a metal gate activated by the key-card, sports five of them that should satisfy all different requirements.
I think it is fair to say that the Country Lodge delivers, exactly as advertised, a comfortable accommodation for business travellers: if you are looking for more luxury, then this hotel is not the right choice for you and perhaps should try the Fairview, Panafric or Crowne Plaza, just to quote the ones I have noticed or visited nearby. I now live in a serviced apartment, but if I were to choose again a hotel in Nairobi, I'd probably go to the Fairview, which provides that nicer touch for €20-30 more each day, but the Country Lodge would also be the logical back up choice.

I have stayed here twice, in 2012 and 2013: it's an excellent no-frills hotel, great rooms, very clean, excellent wi-fi, great staff, great breakfast, and a direct gate into the fancier Fairview (with lovely gardens and great restaurants). So an excellent hotel for work/business visits, and I guess also for leisure-travel stopovers in Nairobi.

Room Tip: Rooms near the gym may get treadmill noise.

I stayed there for one night in transit to Kakamega. The hotel was bright and clean. Security was noticeable, but as a new visitor to Kenya, I felt this was interesting rather than intrusive. The reception and breakfast staff were very professional and helpful. The breakfast was very good with fresh omelettes amongst the good range of options. The room was a very good size for just me and very comfortable. The shower was the best I have ever experienced. I would definitely recommend the Country Lodge. Thank you.

Just a one night stay after a long flight via Amsterdam. Very comfortable with clean and airy rooms, and the hotel was welcoming. Didn't have time to use the pool and have no comments on the pricing structure as I didn't pay for the room myself. Also I cannot comment on the food arrangements as I arrived at 10pm, or the location as I taxi'd in from the airport and back out to the airport the next morning.

However the Wifi worked well and breakfast was fine.Overall for an overnight stay on a business trip I couldn't find anything to complain about!

The concept advertised by this hotel is that it should provide comfortable accommodation for business travellers at an alleged low cost. Granted it’s clean, bedding is comfortable, there is a large desk with built-in plug adaptors, and staff is friendly. It is also true that it is safe. Because of the proximity of the Israeli embassy, there are all sorts of security check points and gates, but the result is that one feels like living in a prison. Ikea-type furniture and decoration are really minimal and convey an overall impression of cheapness and lack of warmth. Single bedrooms are exiguous (if you have two suitcases they will barely fit in), and there is no proper separation between bathroom and bedroom. TVs are old (no flat screen) and small. I had to complain three days in a row that I had no hot water until it was fixed. The breakfast buffet is OK, but there is no restaurant, and room service only starts at 6 pm, which, if you have to stay working at the hotel, is very impractical. It is also impossible to have a coffee or a tea at the (minimal) bar past breakfast time, and even during breakfast time, outside guests who only want a coffee have to pay a full breakfast package. Business services are minimal and there were problems with the printer and the two laptops, which constitute the whole equipment. One might accept all of this if room rates were really attractive. But for USD 144 per night, this is not the case. As for the location, aside from the restaurants of nearby Fairview Hotel, there are no restaurants within walking distance.

Room Tip: Take a double room

Thank you very much for your feedback.

I am disappointed to learn that you did not enjoy your stay with us. We did discount your room rate for the hot water issue and are sorry we did not do enough to ensure your satisfaction.

Country Lodge is a limited food and beverage service hotel with no restaurants. This is indicated on our website and in every communication during the reservations process. The room rate and the facilities offered are based on good value for money and functionality. Our product offering is consistent with similar limited service hotels worldwide.

However, we are in the process of facilitating easier access to the Fairview Hotel restaurants next door – this should improve the experience significantly.

Perhaps next time try our sister hotel, The Fairview!

Regards,
Daniel | Joint Managing Director | Country Lodge

This Hotel advertises itself as offering a single room at prices from 130 usd followed by small print that says the daily dollar rate may fluctuate. However when I came to pay in Dollars it was fixed to the hotel rate of 79 shillings ,they would not accept my dollars at 1130 usd per day face value so my daily rate actually came to 148 usd, even with the best rate in town on the day (83 shillings) it would have been 137 usd. Basically this hotels claim of rooms at 130 usd are false. Also if you do stay there change your dollars outside and pay in shillings, then at least you won't get so badly stung !

Stayed in this hotel with business colleague for two weeks. We each had individual smallish but comfortable rooms that were cleaned and replentished with supplies daily. Spacious desks allowed stay-in work days. WiFi available throughout hotel. Safe in closet worked well. Showers were strong and had plenty of hot water. Bedding changed upon request. Lunch and dinner available about 100 meter walk away. Location is in safe area with numerous gaurds and road checks in and out. Local taxis that are safe and reasonable available at hotel. Staff outstanding and conversant in English and Kishwahili.

Room Tip: If you require an elevator to upper floor, ask for a room in the "rear" part of the buildi...
