“great for the price - and safe”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 19, 2011

Stayed for one night at the start of our safari. Hotel is well guarded with several layers of security, so it is a safe place to stay. There is an in room safe; most of the other hotels we stayed in did not have one. Rooms are a bit sparse and basic, painted cement walls etc, but clean with adequate toiletries. Horrible TV. We did not get the badly needed good night’s sleep; the room was just too hot and humid for us Canadians. It just didn't cool down at night like the game reserve hotels did. The ceiling fan was very noisy with speeds varying from very fast to downright scary. The buffet breakfast was pretty good, we drank the juice and had ice cubes and didn't get sick. Room service is available but they bring it in from neighbouring properties. Do your currency exchange here, they had the best rates we encountered, up to 8% better than the safari hotels, we didn't and it cost us. If I was doing the trip over I would look for a room with air-conditioning, other than that it is great value.

Great hotel for the business traveler. Rooms are clean and functional, internet works well and staff are super friendly. The location on Upper Hill is ideal for business functions in this part of Nairobi as you can avoid most of Nairobi's mind-boggling Traffic.

Room Tip: I prefer rooms in the new wing,

We stayed at Country Lodge for 1 night as part of our Kenya vacation.
We used a family room as we were 4 of us.
The hotel itself is in a very quiet neighbourhoodright next to Fairview hotel.
It is on a small hill with lots of greenery around. It is a simple hotel with no restaurant except for breakfast service which is an average spread with something for every one.
The family room was neither too big nor too small It was comfortable. The bathroom was a little small and tight but every thing was neat and clean.
There was a gym available with fair enough equipments available.
For food, you have to order room service which is sourced from near by restaurants or you could walk across to one of the 4 restaurants at the next door Fairview. There is a vendiing machine available for soft drinks and some basic candy options.
Wifi was available in the room as part of the room rent which was good.
The taxis available at the hotel entrance are not ripping you off and provide a good way to move around the city. You could call them once you are done with your chores or shopping and the same taxi will pick you back from an agreed place.

A standard room is around 100 USD. Our family room cost us 180 USD including taxes and breakfast. Overall a very good option for staying in Nairobi either before or after your safari. The only thing that could have made it better was a onsite restaurant.

This is not a hotel with a lot of character. In fact, it's decor is minimalist and modern. But, it has everything you need for about $100. There is even a long desk with enough outlets for phones, computers etc. Breakfast is not bad and the staff is very prompt fulfilling requests. Location is great and for meals the Fairview Hotel, just down the lane, has a patio restaurant with fabulous sandwiches and a few other eateries. One note, the 4 storey building does not have an elevator but I believe the other does.

Room Tip: Reserve early as this place is nearly always full.

Sister property of larger Fairview Hotel; located in heavily-guarded embassy corridor; quiet at night; older demographics; businessmen oriented; staff speak excellent English; internet connectivity fastest near the lobby; rooms are spacious with large desks; assortment of electrical outlets available; great water pressure and hot temperatures in showers; parking can be tight; business center & fitness rooms are small; no restaurant on premises (though a breakfast buffet is available) - plenty of selection though at the adjacent Fairview Hotel;

Room Tip: Ask for a lower level room to get the best wi-fi!

Stayed at the Country Lodge on the way into Kenya about two weeks ago and returned to fly home. for the last night in country. Economy plus room was 9600ks (80/$) and includes free Wi-Fi that is easy to use along with television and walking distance to center city. There are even two small rooms with exercise machines and great looking courtyard. Breakfast is also offered for the price and it was cooked to order. Close to five star without the five star price.

Attention to detail produces a great guest experience. Everything was incredibly clean and well-organized. Decor of hotel is light and airy. Security seems excellent (I had to use my card key 5x to get to my room--2 outside doors, 2 hallway doors, then room); Israeli embassy is across the street so soliders with AK47 on patrol outside. No a/c in room but I never even used the ceiling fan. Went to Fairview Hotel for meals. Power failed a few times, but generator kicked in immediately. Rather than sit in a taxi for an hour in a traffic jam, I walked up from the shops in University District below the hotel, only took half an hour. Free wireless in room worked well, called home using skype with no problems.
