The setting and atmosphere is amazing at Carnivore. From when you walk through the door and see the massive barbecue with guys turning meat on the skewers, to the customary Dawa when you find your table, everything is great. To me, the only downer was the lack of variety of venison, but I do understand that has to do with the conservation laws of the country. Well worth the visit.

“Great food”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 18, 2012

The food and service was lovely. Eat as much as you can while the flag is up. The only minus was that I expected more game, however the other food was excellent. I would definitely go there again

First Impressions: Acting on a tip from our tour guide, we sought out this meat lover's paradise. It is an open-air (but roofed) restaurant in the Langata suburb of Nairobi, Kenya. As its very name implies, Carnivore specializes in all meat, and it features an all-you-can-eat meat galore. Vegans need not apply. In fact, they will be horrified by the sight of the massive BBQ grill at the entrance. The price is quite expensive by Kenyan standards, and slightly so for tourists.

Pros: Needless to say, meat lovers have found their version of paradise. Various kinds of BBQ meats are endlessly paraded across the dining hall. And they have devised an ingenoius system of finding out which table wanted to be served: Each table has a small flag and, as long as the flag stays up, that table is served. Of the meat choices, I absolutely loved the BBQ ribs.

Cons: Carnivore Restaurant was reputed to be the best "Game Meat Haven" in Kenya. Not anymore. No longer can they serve antelope, zebra, wildebeest or monkeys. And this is where my beef lies (no pun intended). It loses one star in my review for that. It's not exactly their fault but, since 2004, when the Kenyan government banned the sale and import of game meats for fear of poachers, the only "exotic" game meat they serve now are ostrich and crocodile. I feel really bad, but the very reason I sought this establishment was due to its game meat reputation. If I had known better, I would not have gone.

Verdict: Overrated and overpriced. It was disappointing! What else can I say? I won't necessarily discourage meat lovers from visiting this place. Just remember to lower your expectations -- way, way down. Mind you, to be fair, they still serve all meat: chicken, turkey, beef, lamb and pork. Wow. Big deal. Except every other restaurant serves that. What was once "game meat heaven" had just degenerated into your average, garden-variety tourist trap. Enough said.

(On a side note, if you want game meats, go to South Africa.)

“Carnivore a Great Expericence not to be Missed...”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 16, 2012

After a wonderful 12 day photo safari through Kenya with Trails of Africa in Sept. 2012, our group ended at the Carnivore Restaurant in Nairobi. The food was great and they even had some decent South African wine by the glass. The wait staff and management was very accommodating and a fun time was had by everyone in our group. A special shout-out to Geraldine Dunford in their Sales and Marketing Office is also warranted. I emailed the restaurant a few weeks after returning to Los Angeles and mentioned that I had intended to purchase a souvenir baseball cap that I had seen I their gift shop prior to dinner and was greatly disappointed that the shop was closed by the time we left. She very graciously sent me a great looking cap (gratis!) and I couldn't be happier with it. It says Carnivore Kenya on the front and is a great souvenir of my fabulous trip to a lovely country with terrific people.

“Our first night in Nairobi”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 14, 2012

This interesting restaurant has an open kitchen...all the meats are done on a huge BBQ and the list of meat options is posted near to the door as you enter. The tables are mostly out in the garden area but all are under a canvas cover.
The meats are accompanied by various vegetables and salads.
The meats are brought by servers on large skewers and pieces are shaved off onto one's plate as they wish. An interesting variety of sauces are offered to accompany the various meat options....pork, beef, poultry, crocodile, ostrich, lamb, etc. The meat keeps coming until you put down the flag! Then dessert, coffee & tea are offered.
It was a unique and delicious experience!
