“Safe and Simple”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed November 9, 2012

Stayed here for the first time the night before and the night after my safari in the standard room. It was average, but compared to other places, it was good enough for the price. Here are the pros and cons:

pros
- relatively good price (paid about 50 euro/night breakfast included)
- lots of security to get into the premises
- free internet
- rooms are good size
- I tried the dinner and breakfast, and both were very good. Lots of food, lots of choices, and it tasted good. Breakfast was eggs, bread, fruits, baked beans, bacon, cereal, juices, tea, coffee. Dinner one night was chips, potatoes, salad, ugali, rice, soup, bread, fish, beef stew, fruits.
- very friendly and helpful staff
- there is a store in the lobby that acts as a mini post office and place to buy phone cards. very convenient!

cons
- walls are paper thin. Expect to hear your neighbour singing or people's conversations in the halls.
- I stayed in room 311 one night, and the wifi signal was too weak to reach - no wifi
- whole place is a bit dated. Rooms and beds are a bit old
- there is simple push lock on all the doors. No chain lock or bolt. Staying by myself I did not feel very comfortable with that.
- Rooms clean for the most part, but the first night I checked in there was a mud stain near the bed....
- hardly any power outlets

Overall, good place to stay if you just need a reasonably priced place to sleep a few nights. The breakfast included makes it a good deal.

Room Tip: don't stay near the stairs (too noisy) or in room 311 (wifi signal too weak)

This is our third stay at the MGH. Rooms are simple but clean, with ensuite bathrooms. There is plenty of hot water, in fact, trying to get a comfortable temperature for the shower can take a long time! The staff is very helpful, and there are guards to insure safety. We usually take two meals a day in the restaurant. It is adequate. Breakfasts include eggs made to order, cereals, beans, chips, bacon, sausage, and fresh fruit. Dinners always have several meats (beef, chicken, lamb, fish, goat), vegetables, soup, and lots of starches.
The guest house now offers free wifi, but it is spotty and unreliable. If you are having trouble with a signal, move to another part of the guest house.
MGH is just a short walk away from a bus/matatu stop, which can take you directly downtown.
Because we stay at least a week or more, we opt to pay in shilling instead of dollars, which always reduces our bill, even with bank fees.. Do the math between the room rates, before deciding which is best for you!

Room Tip: Ask for an upper floor

The hotel is very clean with plenty of hot water and the free wifi; the staff is very friendly and helpful but room was not quiet to relax and sleep. The breakfast is perfect (includes Delicious omelets and alots of fresh fruit). Rates seem high ($90-110 USD/double). This hotel is far from city center. I would stay never again!!!!!!!!!

We stayed here on our first night in Kenya, and it was a good introduction to Nairobi, especially when we didn't know what to expect. It was clean and simple, as you'd expect from a self-styled guesthouse. The corridors were quite "institutional"and echoing, and the doors did perhaps bang a little noisily, but the rooms were very clean with plenty of hot water, showers, mosquito net and bottled water. Free wifi was a bonus on our first night to let everyone know we were there safely. Breakfast was good, wide range including Kenyan porridge and fresh fruit. The staff were all very friendly and welcoming. I'd stay here again!

The service was good but if you want a quiet place to relax & sleep avoid it as there is much better and cheaper. The shower had plenty of hot water and the free wifi was a big plus. However, if anyone is staying near you, even the closing of a door 4 doors away made you feel as the door in your room was closing.

Rooms are simple but very clean, all with mosquito nets and private bathrooms. Rates seem high ($90-110 USD/double), but Nairobi lodging is generally expensive, and the guest house is quiet, safe, and surrounded by lovely gardens. Surprising amenities (a big swimming pool and free in-room wifi) along with buffet breakfast that includes omelets made to order ($15 up charge), lots of fruit and pastries. Front desk staff is efficient but nor particularly friendly. Housekeepers on the other hand are quite helpful and warm.

Room Tip: No air conditioning so avoid the west side of the building and ask for a room on the higher floors o...

We stayed here the week before Christmas, 2011. The staff were fabulous -- helpful, friendly -- and that includes everyone from the front desk to the dining room and throughout the facility. They were great about helping us get taxis, etc. Rooms are very simple but clean and eveything worked -- including the mosquito netting. Food is uninspired, but breakfast (included) had omelets made to order almost every day. After dinner there one evening we chose to eat all our other meals out. Nice grounds. We didn't use the pool but it is a nice amenity. We loved sitting in the patio and having tea in the evening. We didn't appreciate how well MGH was run until we stayed at another religious guest house later that was not nearly as nice. Very affordable.
