“Great value and service close to the UN”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 16, 2012

Nice gardens, comfortable rooms and decent home-style cooking, friendly service for an excellent price. If you want a pool, restaurant, bar, 24 front desk, etc. this may not be your place, but it certainly worked for me. Not all rooms have attached and non-shared bath, so call and make sure in advance.

Room Tip: The ground floor room does not have an attached bath; it is just but outside with a separate door. A...

My room was clean but spartan. The mosquito nets were heavy duty and romantic in their way. What made me suffer was the lukewarm to cold shower which even in November made me shudder. I loved the breakfast which was cooked to order and had fresh fruit and things like mango pancakes. The coffee was mediocre - a disappointment in a country famous for its beans. I also felt hassled when I couldn't pay for my dinner together with my room. It had to be cash and I had no more shillings!
But the garden was lovely and homey and the staff friendly and personal. So many interesting other guests. I'd go back, this time with more cash...

This was my third visit to Nairobi and I thought of trying out the Gigiri Homestead which is on the UN's approved list of local guesthouses.I was not disappointed. The ease of communication when booking and the friendly welcome was reassuring after a long journey from New York. The room was clean and comfortably furnished with good wifi connection.Any requests were dealt with promptly, and I mean promptly ie. immediately and not several minutes as with many posh hotels which have to go through several links in the chain.I reported a problem with the water pressure in the shower and within literally 30 seconds they were on the phone to the plumber.Problem solved.
All the staff without exception were courteous and helpful, always ready to help and with a smile.I will have no hesitation in recommending the homestead for it's service and proximity to the main UN compound.

Room Tip: Book early for an en suite room on the first floor

For those who come for a meeting at the UN campus, this hotel is located perfectly between the UN campus and a shopping mall (called Village Mall) both within walking distances. I came to know that there are two houses (50 and 54). I stayed in a room on the first floor. Although my room had a bathroom separate, the bathroom was only for me and located next to it. The room itself is also at the end of a short hallway and I did not encounter anyone at least during my short stay when I went to the bathroom from my room. I heard some people upstairs did not get hot water but my bathroom did not have any issues and was clean/comfortable with a big shower outlet. Internet was also working very well. There is a shared living and dining area and the people serving guests are very nice, and I felt very much welcomed. The breakfast was also nicely served. Upon request, you can also have a dinner. The Village Market is also within a walking distance, although we took a taxi at night. The house is located in a very quiet area. I will definitely go back if I have a chance.

I stayed in Gigiri Homestead twice recently, and had an excellent experience both times. From the large shower heads that give you a proper soaking to the hand made beds, everything has been carefully thought through. The staff are welcoming, courteous and accept feedback eagerly. The walk to village market (10 mins) and the UN (15 mins) is pleasant and safe. Breakfast hits just the right spot, and the staff will happily book you reliable, friendly and fairly priced taxis. If you want all the hotel extras like swimming pools etc, you can take a trip into town fairly easily, but I didn't miss this at all. I will definitely stay here again.

This review is long overdue and one of the reasons why I have become a member at TripAdvisor. We stayed at the Gigiri homestead in October 2010 and as a former Nairobi resident, I was pleasantly surprised by this place. If you really want to experience how wellheeled Nairobi residents live, than you could do no better than to stay at this lovely and pleasant homestay in the outlying suburb of Gigiri (close to the UNEP headquarters). The house itself is a typical Nairobi house built in the traditional colonial style and decorated with a an African touch with a pleasant garden surrounding it. After the heat and the dust of travelling through Nairobi traffic, this was a peaceful oasis to escape to. We never met the efficient Martha but were warmly welcomed by the charming and efficient Stella instead. Nothing was too much of a problem for her-from sorting out taxis to cooking us breakfasts at 6am. The bedrooms with the bathrooms are clean and well furnished and the whole experience was relaxed and informal but with every important detail taken care of. Martha and Stella know a thing or two about hospitality. Try this place if you want a real Nairobi experience.

having travelled various destinations in the African continent and i would pretty much say that i haven't had quite a warm welcome as the one i got while staying at the homestead.the staff are quick on their feet and willing to meet your needs inorder to ensure one's comfort during the visit.the meals are prepared on request and are exemplaryand am glad that when i was ready to eat, my meal wasn't delayed nor was it cold. the rooms are cosy with an extra blanket for chilly weather which is a norm.the bathrooms are impresively clean with hot water and the grounds are secure no need to lock valuables.....believe it!
