“Nice convinient hotel with good service.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed March 14, 2009

The hotel has really improved since my last time there. The rooms are all now ensuite with the deluxes having buth tubs. I enjoyed their food and the ambience is good. can improve on front office staff though.

Stayed in a Double, but they had two single beds guess size 3.5m x 6m joined together. Good for people sharing -savers, but not for couple.

Could do for students and backpackers and shorttimers, i.e. I only need a shelter for a night and I am out of here!

There is shower, have to wait for hotwater to come over, and beware you have to do a lot of balancing-act-on-the-tap to get the right water temperature. Beware even after balancing act you can still burn yourself with hot water temperature fluctuate from very hot, to very cold as you still have soap form on your face.

Duvet can make you sneeze to, I through away the duvet and left with white bed sheet.

Restaurant - they are trying, poor services, having been saved fried egg, had to ask for folk and table knife

Otherwise very secure, great location.

I have stayed at Olive Gardens in Nairobi 4 times within the last year. The main reason has been its location in Hurlingham, the area I used to stay in when I was living in Nairobi.
I find this hotel all right, not too fancy, not too lousy, just plain normal, with kind and helpful 24 hour staff on duty.

My decision to stay at the Olive Garden was simply because my boyfriend and I were coming in from the Coast very late and he was flying from Wilson Airport (2nd airport just outsideNairobi city that specializes in regional flights). He was flying to Eldoret the following morning and we didn't want to risk staying in the city and getting a cab too late which is what happened last time. Plus, much cheaper considering the distance.

Hurlingham is an awesome diverse middle class neighborhood that has some first class restaurants. Restaurant choices include Ethiopian, Lebanese and yes, even an authentic Japanese restaurant. It's close to the Yaya Towers (huge shopping mall) and best of all, it's quite close to
the airport, about a 5 minute trip.

When we checked in, we asked for a double on the first floor and paid for the double...about 4,000 shillings ($60) which we paid for with a credit card, A bargain no doubt. But when we got to the room, it contained two narrow twin beds and was incredibly small. So we went back to the receptions and requested a double room with a DOUBLE bed. The lady said, sure, no problem and then added. "That's 5,500 shillings ($85). We laughed and thought she was kidding but she wasn't. I asked her to explain the difference between a double and a single room. She said the double rate that we were given applied to a room containing two single beds..."you know, for two people who are at a conference and they are are sharing a room. The double rate with the double bed is an executive rate for couples." I asked her whether she truly explained that logic to couples who checked in after booking with a tour group and she said yes. "Are
they happy about it?" "No" she replied ruefully.

I was absolutely livid and called for the manager who went on to repeat their reasoning. So I asked for my money back and she said that it wasn't possible. Now, we were tired from a hellish flight (thanks KQ) and it was now approaching midnight. I had to push to get them to call the night manager to get an authorization code to cancel the transaction. (Be warned, a lot of places in Kenya find it too much trouble to cancel credit card transactions so they will worm their way out of doing it. Hand the card over when you are sure that's what you want to pay for).

The manager was called, hushed conversations ensued, then they offered to refund the card. I called a cabbie to wait for us and made a reservation at the Hilton. Half an hour later they were still swiping the hell out of it, shaking their heads and begging us to just take the twin bed room. At this point, any sane tired person would have but we were tired and angry and refused to bend because their reasoning in the first place was without merit. The simple option would have been to place us in the room with the double bed rather and say good night. The place was empty as was evident by the keys on their hooks.

They finally gave in and gave us a closet on the third floor. (oh yeah, no elevator.) We dragged our bags up (one watchman to called from the gate to double as a bell boy) after paying off the cab driver who had waited for an hour and a half to take us to the Hilton. The room was TINY! The bathroom had a shower with no curtain, a toilet with no seat and a sink with one working tap. The carpet was a fire engine red with stains and the bed.....even the twin beds pushed together were bigger. Needless to say we just crawled into bed and were awake before our alarms and in the lobby before the cab driver got there.

It's in a brilliant location but the staff and the facilities do not
translate that.

Avoid at all costs. If you have to have to have to stay here, take cash and antibacterial by the gallon.
