“Wonderful time at Whistling Thorns”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 6, 2013

Whistling Thorns is a very good, relaxing place to stay when in the Nairobi/Karen area of Kenya.
We stayed in a cabin with a bathroom/shower, and our accommodations were very comfortable.
Jacob, our driver for two days, was fantastic. He explained the history of the area, along with knowing exactly where to take us in the area on our free days.

The food is very good, served on a porch dining area where you can watch the Kenyan sunset.
Mary Louise runs a very good operation. The only negative was that it took a bit long to get food served at dinnertime. At breakfast, we didn't see these delays.

Whistling thorns has always been a great gateway and i have been frequenting it since i was a child mostly for day trips on a self catering basis. Today i decided to order from the menu and down went the ratings. I go there at 12 and ordered for drinks which were served in a timely fashion then ordered for a cheese and tomato sandwich with chips which not only was served late but also had ham in it...no chips were served with it...i then returned it and asked them to correct the order...the person taking our order then came up and asked us to order something else..i ordered for a pizza because that was the onother vegetarian food they had on the menu...they told me it would take 40 minutes...granted as it was a busy day...i asked them to atleast serve the fries while i wait...i prompted the waiter twice and they kept promising that the fries are ready and coming...2 hours and nothing served so far...meanwhile i am seeing other tables being served with fries...i then called the waiter to cancel the order...the fries are then served in a matter of minutes...the waiters are now on a mission to serve the food because i had threatened to pay just for the drinks ...the pizza is then served...i refuse to pay for the food and ask to speak to the manager...no one calls the manager...i pay for the drinks and walk out....the waiter asks the gatemman not to open the gate...i ask again to speak to the manager and the waiter poses to be the manager...the owner a white lady then happens to over hear the commotion...the waiters lie to her about what happened...they tell her that we returned the sandwich without mentioning that the reason for the return was the ham...the owner did not want to listen to me and at one point even said that we do not serve chapatis here...she said we serve what's on the menu.....this i feel was said with a racial undertone...i am a kenyan Asian and chapatis are our daily food...i felt helpless and was forced to pay...i then left...i later had the pizza and it was alright...

Stopped by Whistling Thorns en route from Namanga to Nairobi on Jamhuri day. It was a lovely stop on a very bumpy road! However was a bit disappointed with the service - there was only one women's toilet available to visitors - and it didn't have any toilet paper, even an hour after we informed the waiters. The food was ok, but one of my pet peeves for a decent hotel is serving that weird-coloured tomato ketchup they have here in Kenya. For the price we paid, I would have expected heinz ketchup or something higher quality than the fluorescent stuff.
Other than that, was a lovely spot and obviously a lot of work and thought has gone into making the place welcoming and a nice change from Nairobi.

A small hotel 13Kms from Kiseriain on your way to Isinya. Alot of peace and quiet-good if you want to just have a sober conversation with your important other/ have a retreat or read books. The restaurant has no music. Went to this place with a few friends based on the reading on the website-A good place for families or retreats. Go if you want the Quiet.

Went to Whistling Thorns for a quite afternoon with family. My son and sweet wife enjoyed their swimming to the fullest.

The food was really tasty and like home made...an culinary experience I do remember till now. The entry to the facility is however bit hidden with poor signage to lead you. Especially, once you take the left turn at the main junction off Kiserian main road to the lead road, you will find yourself stopping people by the road to ask about the entrance to the attraction.

Were it not for some people walking near our vehicle, my son while running up and about, was almost mauled by one of the many dogs that loiter within the compound and to date he seems not to like the idea of going back there.

The drive to the venue is also soothing...A true road trip feeling.. I would highly recommend this facility to families, groups of friends or anyone willing to try out something less formal. the waiters are really good and first and the place has a lot of life from interested patrons.

All the same it was time well spent away from the hustles and bustles of the city.

Had heard of it but had never been. General location is superb and grounds perfect for big groups activities. The children enjoyed the swimming though I would suggest a baby pool too for small babies. We loved the nyama and accompaniments.

I would recommend it to those who dont want to travel so far from city yet want to forget the busy world.
