“Not a railway fan, but love this place”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 13, 2014

Having visited, I now understand the colonial history better and how the railroad related to it. I asked for someone to guide me among the cluttered artifacts. The guide was fantastic! On Thursday afternoon we were the only ones there. Very hard to find behind the Polytechnic University and past a restaurant row of typical Kenyan food. Take a taxi.

“Excellent History”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 18, 2014

Liked the historical artifacts inside and all the old trains outside. The guide was knowledgeable about the construction and history of building this railroad spanning from one end of Africa to the other.I enjoyed exploring the train from one of my favorite movies "Out of Africa." Lots of locomotives to visit. A must stop if you love trains

“attractive and interesting”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 12, 2014

The railway museum in Nairobi is a charming museum. It gives an impression of railways in the era when rail travel was the major way of transport on land. Engines are on show as well as carriages and all kind kind of paraphernalia (seats, cutlery, technical equipment etc). An attractive extra is the geocache trail set out in the museum and museum grounds. This makes it a real adventure, not just for kids but for adults as well. As you are allowed to climb all engines and carriages it is like an expedition.

“Not glamorous or slick, but an absolute gem”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 4, 2014

This place is a little out of the way and definitely not your normal well set up slick museum, but considering that Nairobi owes its existence to the Mombasa - Uganda railway, if you're into history, trains or both then this is a must. The museum is a jumble of random artifacts from the pioneer days of East Africa, with not much in the way of guidance or assistance, but I really enjoyed wandering around and taking it all in - it's not a very big museum, so you don't need much time for this. Outside is a train graveyard with several old East Africa Railways locomotives and carriages, including the original carriage where a gentleman was removed from his seat one night by one of the famous man eating lions along the railway. Overall, I spent maybe 1 - 1.5 hours here, and would say it's definitely worth a visit if you have the time.

“Railway history in old fashioned way”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 23, 2013

Lot's of interesting things in the museum, but it's not upgraded. Lot's of cars and locomotives are spread out without any explanation and not very well maintained. A guide is a necessity :)
