“Average feeling hostel”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed June 16, 2013

We found it difficult to find midrange accommodation in Nairobi. Hartebeest charges 40 USD on booking.com for a double with shared toilet/bathroom. The place has a hostel feel, with at least one dorm room, and two toilets plus one (hot) shower in the main building. Value wise it was the pick of the bunch, although with hindsight it would have been better and cheaper to camp at one of the handful of overlander friendly places in town. The place seems to be run by one poor woman, who juggled cooking, serving and front desk duties (we waited an hour for an average and pricey dinner). Rooms are basic and beds are clean. There is free and decent wifi, which is a big plus.

4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 15, 2013

I've stayed at Hartebeest 4 or 5 times now, alone and with my boyfriend, and I will definitely go back again! I mostly stay in the dorm room (it's typically empty), though I've also camped out in my tent a couple times. Despite being on a very quiet street, it's incredibly convenient: close enough to walk downtown if you like walking, and close to Yaya, Prestige, and the restaurants that I frequent. The food is quite good (breakfast is included), though I agree with the previous reviewer that calling ahead is a good idea. I don't eat much meat, but they make a mean veggie curry with ugali (not on the menu). The rooms are clean, the bathrooms flush, and the garden is great for yoga. The staff is incredibly friendly and helpful. If you are on any sort of budget, GO HERE!

That said, a few small things could make this place so much better. The toilet seat was broken on 3 consecutive visits, the bedspreads are incredibly ugly, they only have white bread, when I ask for breakfast at 6am it is invariably a half hour late, they've let the landscaping and outdoor bar deteriorate since taking over the property, etc. Small complaints for the price, however.

This place really needs to be commended. it is great value, has clean rooms, a filling breakfast, and fine cooking. the beds are clean and come with mosquito nets. the chef is also great and can whip up a great curry fish. he can be slow though so try to order ahead of time. the location is also much more convenient to Nairobi than the Wildebeest Camp which is out in Karen. the hot water is spotty, but there is a downstairs shower that you can also use. stayed in the dorm and the whole place to myself most nights. Take the 111 matatu into town and at the Railway station change to 125 or 126 to get to the david sheldrick elephant sanctuary or nairobi national park.
