“Horrible!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed January 31, 2013

Do yourself a favor and go somewhere else!

Bad food, too pricey an very slow service!

We had 4 different menu items and we all felt the same way; far too overpriced for what we got and none of it was really good either!

“Nice food and fast service”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 1, 2013

Lamp shank was incredible. The breakfast buffet prepares you for a whole day ahead and has quite a variety of choices. You can even relax outside with friends for a drink or chat. Nice and quiet

“NOT IF YOU HAVE A SENSITIVE STOMACH”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed July 7, 2012

The Panafric is a convenient place for an after work drink or a weekend mid afternoon meetup with friends. Just make sure you stick to beer, coffee or cakes!

i have a very hardy stomach.I have no problems here. My wife has a very sensitive one. She does have problems ... big time.

The cooked food is typically bland, hardly very inspired, big hotel all day dining, stuff. Over the last 10 years we have been talked into eating at the Flame Tree by friends 5 times. Always at least a year apart in the belief that things must have got better. There is no nice way to say that she has ended up with an immediate and bad case of diarrhoea and vomitting every single time!

This does not happen in any other Nairobi restaurant. Specifically it does not happen in the Thorn Tree which is the same ownership and a fairly similar menu.

We have come to the conclusion that it can only be that they massively recirculate their cooking oil. The other alternative - waiters and cooks who have not washed their hands for 10 years - does not bear thinking about!

Anthony N, General Manager at Flame Tree Restaurant, responded to this review, July 17, 2012
Dear Guest,

I would like to thank you for your recent dining experience at the Flame Tree Restaurant and would also like to express my sincere appreciation for your Trip Advisor review.

I am saddened to hear about your dining experience. This is indeed quite surprising and a unique experience as we have stringent procedures that see to our Food & Beverage team deliver thorough & uncompromised hygiene standards in the kitchens, restaurants, and hotel as a whole. We are also strictly regulated by the international HACCP certification policies & procedures and therefore recycling of any food type is forbidden in this and any other Sarova establishment. Our food & beverage associates are not exempted from this and go through scrutinizing tests such as the scrupulous food handler’s test that ensure they are fit for handling & preparations of guest meals. As a standard procedure, the kitchens, restaurants, and hotel as a whole are also evaluated every quarter in order to maintain our top hygiene standards.

Immediately after your review, we investigated the reason behind this and discovered that it might have been caused by some meal that maybe your wife might have consumed before or after dining here as it was prepared by the same team & using the same technique as your meal. We greatly encourage our guests to counter check anything they’ve purchased outside of the hotel so as to avoid any unforeseen instances such as this. However, due to your review, we were able to tighten our belts even more to ensure such incidents never occur at any of our restaurants.

I sincerely hope that this independent experience doesn’t deter you from visiting Flame Tree Restaurant again.

Warm Regards,

Anthony Ngunga
