“A "must visit" in Nairobi”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 29, 2013

It is always nice to visit Karen Blixe Museum. The sorrunding grounds are nice with flowers and blooming bushes. The guide we had was good and this is a big part of the forming of Kenya and an interesting periode of Kenyan history. Karen Blixen was a great woman!

“Way better than expected”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 27, 2013

Beautifully preserved and well guided tour of an iconic and spectacular house from the turn of last century.
I don't gush often but this was breathtaking. Can't believe people could put such a house together at that time and location.
Highly recommended

Knowledgeable guide will talk about Karen's life and show you the grounds and house. No pics allowed inside the house though.

“Ok place. Feel free to give it a miss.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 22, 2013

So Karen was this poor little rich girl who came to Nairobi with her Danish husband. Had an affair with a British guy, and went back after 16 years, during which time she set up a school and taught some of the neighborhood children.
Now, I am not undermining what she did, but having seen similar stories in so many emerging markets I really didn't get what the big deal about her achievements was.
And the museum is basically one of the houses she lived in. It's ok. Not remarkable.
It costs 600 Kenya Shillings for residents and double that for foreigners. This includes a free guide who walks you around the place giving descriptions of the place.

If you are a fan of "out of Africa", or just want to know about an extraordinary women, don't miss this place. It gives you a sense of East Africa before the wars, and is quite interesting. The guides obviously enjoy their job and make the visit even better.
