It was incredible to see such an amazing safari right in the middle of the city! I was in Nairobi for work and my boss arranged for a few colleagues and I to have a day of safari the day before our conference. He hired a great driver/guide to take us through and we couldn't believe that there was such incredible wildlife so accessible in the city.
To be fair, it'll be a bit difficult for you to see the 'big five' (lions, elephants, buffalo, rhinos and leopards). If you are set on seeing all five, your best bet would be to head to Masai Mara (the Kenyan half of the more popularly known 'Serengeti'). But that's a distant and comparatively expensive trip that requires a flight and at least one overnight stay. If that's out of your time/price range, fear not. At Nairobi National Park, you will definitely see some of the five and, if you're lucky and in the right place at the right time you may see most.
At the opening of the park you are greeted by Masai warriors, in full dress, jumping and singing. Then you drive in and realize that the park is HUGE. Seriously, this is not Central Park. It's a world unto itself. During my tour, I saw elephants, buffalo and rhinos, as well as a ton of gorgeous giraffes, zebras, ostriches, antelope, wild deer, wild boars, alligators, and tons more. Note, this is not the zoo! You see these animals up close and personal from your guide's jeep. Amazing pictures and an unforgettable experience.
