Writing a good and balanced review is not easy when you have to give an overall rate. I give it 5 stars bc it is an excellent place, despite some shortcomings to be described below. First, I found an amazing rate of 127, ex taxes (160 in total or so), on "obits". Normally the rate is much higher, and since I'm always looking at price/quality ratio (from 3-5 star hotels), so this price may influence this review a bit.
The Stanley is perfectly located in downtown Nairobi, which is buzzling during the day. Although the stories about the city may be true, I felt quite safe during the evening around the hotel as well. But of course, be vigilant always. Now the hotel itself. The staff is amazingly friendly and super helpful. In comparison to other hotels, even those in Asia, I believe this was about the best I've ever seen. Moreover, they really made me feel home. The lobby is genuine, far from the "standard" lobbies in those big chain hotels. Check in was fast and convenient.
The room was very spacious... make that HUGE!!! And apparently my room was just a standard one. It is also very clean, silent and very comfortable. The furniture is old but very classic and nicely maintained. The bed is large, clean, and comfortable. There is a large study desk, a little desk with a hairdryer and some comfortable chairs in the corner. The bathroom is standard, but all amenities are there, including bath slippers. The minibar is well equiped and the prices are super (1.5 bucks for a cook, a bit more for a beer). Roomservice is friendly and quick. I must say that the quality of the stake was not great, but the soup and smoothie was exactly how I liked it). The wireless connection in the hotel costs 1200 shilling per 24 day, but if you want 12 out of 24 hours it is a bit cheaper (this was fine for me). The connection, however, is not super fast, but sufficient for websites and even Skype with video.
The restaurant downstairs is nice and the food is very good. Service is excellent, although it takes a bit long to get the check (this happened three times). Check out of the hotel also took a bit long because I wanted to pay with AMEX and apparently this card needs to be verified by phone first.
All in all, the hotel is an absolute great place to stay. It will make your time in Nairobi memorable due to its distinct and authentic character. Even though I paid little, I think it would be a great value too had I paid (much) more. Anyhow, look for the deals on all general booking sites!!!
