“Loved this hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 23, 2014

It is extremely rare for us to book 5 star hotels, we normally feel more comfortable down the scale a bit, however we discovered The Stanley through a safari booking where we were not given a choice and just booked in for a couple of nights before going on safari. We have since stayed again for a second time and enjoyed it as much as the first. It is a beautiful reception and you can imagine how glamorous it must have been to be there when it was first built...off the lobby is the fantastic Thorn Tree Café...a must, and a shopping area. The rooms are very large and spacious, the decoration is a little tired, but not enough to bother us, and the room was clean with everything you could need. The rest of the hotel is charming, large wooden staircases, old photographs and lovely furnishings.
One of my favourite parts is the rooftop pool, its huge! plenty of seating/sun beds, a nice changing area and a bar. We really enjoyed spending time there.
Finally the staff were lovely, I really wish I could remember names because they deserved to be mentioned...as we looked at the pictures a female member of staff joined us and started to explain what we were looking at giving us a potted history, she was just finishing her shift so we left the hotel together, her going home, us for a wander she very kindly offered to show us a few of the sights...it was so lovely just having her for company and giving us an insight into life in this city, her kindness was reflected in many of the other staff we came into contact with. WE would absolutely stay at The Stanley again.

Room Tip: We stayed in a room at the front, there was a little noise from the street but unless you are a ligh...

Everyone I dealt with- from the hotel taxi driver who picked me to the one who dropped me off at the airport- was friendly and helpful, made me feel at home. The rooms are spacious, neat, clean and not as noisy as one would expect from such a central location. Supermarkets, banks and restaurants are only a short walk away. The a la carte service in the restaurants could have been quicker, but restaurant staff were flexible even indulged me when I went off-menu one evening. The wi-fi in my room was intermittent, but the staff at the business centre promptly tried to resolve it and offered helpful tips. Overall, highly recommended if you're in central Nairobi for business.

Stayed at Sarova Stanley for a couple of days before heading to the Masai. It was the perfect place to unwind after the flight and enjoy a bit of colonial style. I was met at the airport by the transfer (additional fee), which included a cold drink and a lovely cold wet face cloth.

The room was large - especially for one person, and included all the usual additions you would expect in a five star hotel.

The hotel has a great roof terrace with pool which is a the perfect place to get away from the hustle of the city and have a drink. The pool cafe food was quite good, as was the extensive buffet breakfast served in the restaurant downstairs.

The hotel is a short walk from downtown sites, although would use taxis to get around at night anywhere in Nairobi. There are security personnel throughout the hotel.

A few other tips which I hope are helpful:
- good sized safe - fitted my laptop etc
- comfortable large bed
- minor street buzz can be heard in room - would ask for a quiet room if this could be a problem
- good and free wifi access, working with both mobile devices and laptop

The air conditioning worked well - although was not 100% quiet and a reasonably old unit.

The hotel is full of photos from its long past, which is a nice touch. Staff were generally very attentive.

Room Tip: The streets of Nairobi can be quite busy until late, so would suggest a room not facing the street i...

Dear Guest,

Thank you for your review.

We are glad our hotel provided an excellent stop-over before heading to the Maasai Mara Game Reserve.

We appreciate your comments on your arrival experience at the airport, our spacious rooms, in-room safes that fit laptops, comfortable bed, good WiFi access, fully air conditioned room and security personnel in the hotel. Our dining options offered great experiences too. The Pool deck restaurant offered a perfect place to get way from the hustle of the city while having a cool drink. Breakfast at Thorn Tree Restaurant offered an extensive variety to fit your taste buds.

On your return visit, we hope to take you through a heritage walk to see and experience more of our past and history in photos and artifacts.

Warm regards,
David Gachuru.

Very nice hotel that reminds you of the British past of this great nation. Can't fault the hotel which is 5 star in every way, but super annoyed at the price I am paying for 4 nights. I booked direct with the hotel, and upon arrival I am paying USD$250 a night for a standard room, which is one of the highest rates I have paid anywhere in the world for a nice hotel. When I look online, I can find this same room from USD 143.00 / Night exclusive of 28% taxes. This really annoys me, but I am only kicking myself for not booking online with this hotel. So there is my word of advice - stay, but don't pay with them direct. Use http://www.tripadvisor.com/ to search best rates which for me right now would have been with Summit booking engine.

Room Tip: Slight construction noise all around, and some light traffic noise, so possibly higher up is better.

Dear Guest,

We would like to thank you for your review on TripAdvisor.

Thank you for rating your experience as a great stay in a very nice hotel.

We appreciate that you booked directly with the hotel for a four-night stay at a rate of USD 250 per night. Sarova Stanley also offers online rates that vary with day of the week, guest room demand and provides various rate offers. For your next stay we look forward to receiving your booking via TripAdvisor or directly via our website on www.sarovahotels.com.

We regret the noise from construction all round the hotel and traffic noise was unsettling. However, during your next stay, kindly send us a remark to provide a room on the higher floors.

Thank you for your feedback and we look forward to hosting you again.

Kind regards,
David Gachuru.

I was put up in the "The Stanley" while in Kenya for work for 7 days. Initially getting into Kenya at night through Jomo Kenyatta Airport, I thought oh dear, I have gone back in time...
But little did I realises that this olde feeling place would be more than enchanting. Its 3rd world in its own way. I never really felt unsafe at any time in Kenya and especially in the Stanley. I even walked the streets of bustling Nairobi without even an look in my direction, would not dare try that in any of the cites back home in South Africa…
The Stanley is an old hotel and not modern made to look antique, which adds to its charm. The hotel was clean the aircon worked great (Nairobi is much warmer than Johannesburg so it was a plus) and the room spacious with good fittings. The living area had a mini lounge/ dining area, desk, a separate loo and wash area, mini bar and a LCD TV. The bedroom has a double doors which separated the living space from the bedroom. Here again the room was spacious clean and had another LCD TV mounted on the wall. The Safe was digital for added security. The bathroom was a full spacious bathroom with a tub shower and granite finishes, once again very clean, there was even a note to tell me not to drink the tap water, but there was plenty of commentary bottle water so no problem there…

I really liked the Stanley, however the only complaint I would have is the pizza served in the hotel restaurant was rather tasteless. The ice cold Tusker awesome though. Will definitely stay in this hotel again on my leisure trip when I visit East Africa again for leisure on route to go check out Mombasa, DAR and Zanzibar…

Dear Guest,

Thank you for your review from your last stay with us in May last year.

We are happy that our heritage was enchanting and you felt very safe in and outside the hotel. Our room amenities air condition, good interior fittings, digital safe, working desk, wash area, minibar and LCD TV met your expectation.

Our chef appreciated the candid feedback on the pizza served and has retrained the team on tasty pizza production. We hope that in your next visit, you shall give us your feedback on the same.

Once again thank you for your feedback and we look forward to hosting you again.

Warm regards,
David Gachuru.

Had heard a lot about their authentic flavours but sadly I think they should be renamed as the most unauthentic Thai restaurant in East Africa. The restaurant seems to lack knowledge of even basic ingredients used in Thai cuisine.

All in all an extremely bad gastronomic experience which leaves a large dent in ones wallet too.

Dear Guest,

Thank you very much for sharing your feedback with us on the Thai Chi cuisine.

We would regret that the meal experience fell below expectation. This is a very unique comment that have taken time to understand and evaluate with tangible action plans. We would like to assure you that our ingredients are authentic from Thailand and our master chefs are also from Thailand.

During your return visit to Nairobi, kindly contact me directly so that we discuss this over dinner. We remain committed to offering you authentic Thai Cuisine at the Thai Chi Restaurant.

Warm regards,
David Gachuru.
