Bryony and Rick are excellent hosts and do everything they can to make you feel welcome and at home. I'm not sure I'd want to have breakfast, lunch and dinner with a bunch of strangers every day but Bryony does it effortlessly, and Rick, at dinner time, proved to be equally hospitable. Giraffe Manor is a true one-off - a 'stately home' that just happens to have Rothschild giraffe wandering about the grounds, popping their heads in through windows and doors looking for titbits.
Wonderful though the whole experience was, I did feel there were a few small negatives. This place is very expensive to stay in, and for that sort of money the quality of both the accommodation and the food needs to be superb - I thought it fell short on occasion. Meals were superbly cooked and presented but I thought the ingredients for our dinner that evening were disappointing - chicken thighs for main course and cooked bananas for pud seemed a bit cheap and cheerful for the high price tag.
Our room had original Karen Blixen furniture in it and had a lot of charm, but shabby chic shouldn't extend to the bathroom, which was pretty basic.
Having said all that, Giraffe Manor is totally unique and I can't imagine there's anywhere else in the world where you can share your breakfast with a giraffe. Bryony and Rick are wonderfully welcoming and nothing is too much trouble for them. You really do feel as though you're their guests, not just paying customers. A little updating of amenities would go a long way to ensuring that Giraffe Manor continues to be a touch of old-world luxury in modern day Nairobi.
