“Country Style Hotel in Upperhill Nairobi - high international standard”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 15, 2011

The hotel is located just outside main city center Nairobi in an area called Upperhill. Lots of government departments and embassies are around, the area is very safe (however don´t leave at night). The hotel is owned and operated by a family and is to be considered 4/5 star. The rooms do meet international standard and lots of business travelers share with western tourists. The hotel has a very nice pool area and 4 restaurants from casual to high class. You can get economy, business, first class and suite rooms located in 5 buildings on the compound. We stayed there two nights before flying out of Nairobi. it is ideally located next to the main road to downtown and 30 min from airport. Even without navigation or local help you´ll find your way. the quality of service and food is excellent, you can easily stay there for one of two days without leaving the hotel, relax at the pool and enjoy the quiet and cosy atmosphere. There is no distinction between resident rate and tourist rate (which is to our experience unusual for kenya). Parking is available at no extra cost. When you are looking for an hidden gem within a major city this is the place to go.

The Fairview is a beautiful unexpected hotel. It is relatively near the Nairobi city center in a quiet residential area close to a convent school. The proximity to the Israeli embassy makes for a limited traffic area, armed guards at times, and cameras on at all times is initially a bit daunting, but the Fairview is so charming behind the gates that even the obvious presence of world strife did not diminish the experience of being at the hotel.

Fairview staff were helpful in finding good rates on taxi service when I ventured out to the Karen suburb to the Kazuri bead factory and the Karen Blixen estate. The staff were overall professional, friendly, and helpful.

The breakfast--inclusive in the cost of our rooms--was sumptuous and freshly prepared--omelet bar, fresh-squeezed tropical juices, and English/European breakfast standards as well as fabulous Kenyan tea and coffee.

The gardens are the quiet stars of the Fairview. A stroll around the property reveals series of tranquil views around every corner with familiar and unusual plantings impeccabily maintained.

This is truly a hidden gem in Nairobi. A quiet oasis in the midst of a crowded, busy city. My mother and I have stayed at other hotels in Nairobi such as the The Tribe , The Stanley and The Norfolk (all very wonderful hotels as well) but preferred the Fairview Hotel as it was the most comfortable and homey . Security and location are great, staff are wonderful and the food was excellent. A home away from home, casual elegance at its best

We stayed here for 3 nights in December 2009. The rooms are clean and basic. The hotel grounds, pool and garden are beautiful. It's a good value if you are looking for a place to stay in Nairobi proper. We splurged on the rest of our trip (Giraffe Manor, Ngerende Island Lodge in Masaai Mara), so Fairview met our needs and budget overall. I wouldn't spend the bulk of your vacation here as it does seem more business-y in some respects, as others have mentioned.

We arrived from Europe late saturday, arrived the hotel exactly 10.50 pm. When we were finished with the reception nd wanted some wine after a long travel, we got tha answer that they closed at 11 pm, now it was 11.05pm. There were nothing they would do to meet your needs!!!!!!!! And on sunday the winecellar they are famous for was closed. Who are they running the hotel for? The staff or us paying? And the hotel was full, so I bookcked the executive siut, but that did not help! There are just fastfood after 10pm, so we were very very dissapointed with the lack of flexibility and understanding og curtoumers situation. This is a 5 star hotel, and rated nr 1, I had sincerely expected the hole different welcome and followup. And the roomservice used more than 2 hours to bring us some fastfood. It does not help that the place is nice and kleen, when basics do not function.

We stayed here twice, at the start and end of a safari trip. It was everything you want in a hotel. Clean, comfortable and convenient. The food was outstanding, we used all the restaurants and found the Pango Brasserie to be as good as a good restaurant anywhere. The traffic in Nairobi is dreadful and although there are roads all around the hotel, you cannot hear it, the gardens are beautifully maintained and make a peaceful haven in the big city. Staff were helpful and pleasant, beds were very comfortable, bathrooms functional and clean. The buffet breakfast is one of the best ever, poached eggs florentine rocks! The only small negative is the arrangement of tables around the pool. Business meetings are usually going on there while you try to relax by the pool, not always a happy combination.
