“A wonderful oasis - I would definitely stay at the Fairview again.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 3, 2009

I stayed at the Fairview while my daughter was recovering from an illness. I initially stayed at the Nairobi Hilton and moved to the Fairview based on a very favourable recommendation from my daughter's doctor, who frequents the Pango restaurant within the hotel for lunch.
Reception staff were very sensitive to my daughter's plight and made sure that we had a quiet room in the adjacent Fairview apartment building. The room itself was acceptable although we found the beds to be hard. A minor repair was made within the room very promptly and requests for additional soap, etc, were also addressed quickly.
Staff throughout (reception, security, business centre and restaurant) were unfailingly polite and friendly.
The grounds are beautifully landscaped and are an oasis within the city. Much better experience than staying downtown in the more expensive Hilton.
Breakfast was included in the room price and offered a wide selection of quality foods. Food in the various restaurants was very good. We had one dinner at the higher end Pango restaurant and were very impressed with the quality of service and the various unexpected touches, eg, gratuitous glass of champagne, excellent bread basket, free samples of various foods.
This is not a "corporate" style hotel, but rather is a labour of love for the owners (same families have owned the hotel since 1946). I would definitely stay here again.

We stayed at the Fairview for a night before heading out on safari. The hotel is an older style hotel. There is the original colonial structure with a number of later additions. It is about 5 minutes away from downtown Nairobi - in an area of government offices.

This is not a deluxe 5 star experience, but a functioning and well run 3-4 star hotel. Our room was large and comfortable, we had a king sized bed. The bathroom was large and very functional. Our only grizzle was the noise of the evaporative air conditioner.

The only meal we had was breakfast which was reasonable. We enjoyed the freshly cooked omelettes and fresh fruit. We felt that the juices and the temperature of the tea and coffee could be improved.

We also wished to be close to Wilson Airport (the old airport which is far better to use than Jomo Kenyatta if you are going to the game parks or to Kilimanjaro in Tanzania). The traffic to and from the main airport can be a real nightmare in peaks periods.

We felt we received fair value for money at the Fairview.

I have not slept in a bed the size in my room at Fairview in 40 years.

If you spend what they charge per night, you should get a king or queen, just not a good value despite the place having nice common areas.

hotels are for sleeping first and foremost

the location is impossible if there is a traffic jam

Thanks for your feedback. Listening to our customers has allowed us to become the most popular hotel in Nairobi.

Fairview has four single room alternatives that differ in terms of amenities and price. Please see http://www.fairviewkenya.com/Rooms.htm for a description of our various categories. More information on our room differences and rates are attached.

All our rooms with the exception of Economy single rooms have king or queen size beds. For us, room renovation and upgrading is a continuous process and the Economy single rooms are slated for renovation mid this year. The majority of our economy rooms will have four foot beds as opposed to 3 foot by August 2009.
As for the traffic, our location is no worse than any other!

Hotel in pleasant setting although it took us 1 and half hours to/from airport. Food was poor, my husband sent his steak back because it was so tough and he could'nt get his knife through it. The replaced one was not much better and tasted peculiar!! I had grilled fish and chips and the fish was overcooked. Breakfast was disappointing also.

Wine was very expensive for a mediocre fench vin de pays at £6 per glass (about 250 ml). Bottles of wine on the wine list started at about £28!!

  • Liked — Garen setting and secure
  • Disliked — restaurant and cost of wine

Thank you very much for your feedback. Our response:

1) We are the second closest hotel to the airport so an airport run to any other hotel would take longer!

2) Good beef quality and consistency in Kenya is difficult to attain. The only consistent cut is fillet. We will be making changes to our menu shortly to remove any cut that suffers inconsistent quality.

3) Our reviews on breakfast are typically outstanding. Please let us know at: director@fairviewkenya.com regarding what can be improved.

4) Wines in Kenya attract approximately a 250% import duty. Any cheaper wines you get in Kenya are from establishments that evade taxes. I do not believe that any of the hotels in our market offer anything materially cheaper.

Thank you for your feedback.

The Fairview is a beautiful hotel with great amenities and good service. It is extremely well organized for people who come for business, with an excellent work place in each room (good lighting, comfortable chair, large desk!), and also provides just the right kind of relaxing environment for a little down time (at the pool, on of the restaurants or at the cafe) after work. If you can afford it then take a slightly more expensive room, I have stayed in both but the more expensive one is even better value for money and provides a wonderful relaxing atmosphere. In summary, an excellent choice and I will certainly be back again.

As a former Peace Corps volunteer back in Kenya after 30 years to attend a wedding, I found the Fairview a pleasant reminder of what Nairobi was like in the 1970s. The lush gardens, colonial-style architecture, and fine cuisine all made me feel right at home. The Fairview's skylit breakfast area with its great omelet station is extremely inviting and the upstairs Brasserie restaurant offers such exquisite food that it can have few equals in town. But in contrast to the good food and comfortable public areas , I found my standard room a bit spartan. A too short bed and the absence of a sitting chair kept me from lingering too long in my Room 77. And while the hotel's exercise area was well-equipped, the pool could use a heater. As a dedicated lap swimmer, I was delighted to find the pool perfectly clean and mostly empty, but it was simply too cold even at the warmest part of the day. Since the security at the hotel is tight, and even a bit intimidating, it has the effect of isolating guests from the vibrancy of Nairobi. For guests wanting to walk into town, don't let the gates dissuade you!

  • Liked — The public areas, the food, and its beautiful gardens
  • Disliked — The sparsely furnished room and the somewhat diffident staff (omelet cook excepted!)
