“My very favourite hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 28, 2008

In my experience the hotel is unique, and such a breath of fresh air - a real contrast to formulaic hotels. The atmosphere is completely relaxed, the setting, the service, the building and the decor are stunning, and the accomodation and the food excellent. This is one hotel I am always really sad to leave.

Stayed here one night on business and was very impressed. The hotel has a nice established feel, with red brick and stone-clad buildings, parquet wood flooring, and lots of access to fresh air (rather than air con - which isn't really necessary in Nairobi). The grounds are very green, and the location is excellent - central, and oppose the Israeli embassy (i.e. one of the safest streets in Nairobi!). If you like your hotels shiny and full of mod cons then this probably isn't the place for you, but I'd definitely recommend it for business travellers and tourists looking for a good value place in this price range. Oh, and the breakfast is excellent.

Staying at the Fairview was a thoroughly pleasant experience.
I had hoped that I had made the right choice and was very pleasantly surprised with my stay. As a woman travelling on my own I chose a single economy room and it had everything I needed; I was extremely comfortable and the hotel was good value.
The choice at breakfast was excellent, a variety of food and plenty of fresh fruit. I noticed a previous reviewer complained about cold eggs. One would not expect to have good poached eggs sitting in a bain marie. I am sure they would have cooked eggs to order if needed, but had some on hand for busy people. I saw people making separate orders but I thought the fruit, yoghurt, juice and toast so delicious there was no need to eat more.
I was met at the airport by a hotel taxi driven by a very polite and helpful driver. He waited late into the night when the plane arrived late and greeted me with a smile.
I found staff at the hotel friendly and helpful.
I would thoroughly recommend the Fairview to other travellers and would always stay there in future.

The Fairview is an oasis in Kenya! It's a family run hotel and it shows in the way the staff treat their clients. I've stayed here several times over the past five years and now won't even consider staying anywhere else in Nairobi.
Yes... the pool is a little chilly in May but besides that the only problem I have encountered at the Fairview is that it's getting so popular, it's sometimes difficult to get a room!

stayed there on 2 seperate occasions in april 2008; first stay was relatively good although room service was poor and food very average for the price- the room lay-out was nice despite lots of noise so had to shut all windows and doors all the time but mind you fittings were quality. check out made us swipe card twice because they excluded part of the bill first time round.

second stay was very disappoitning - they gave out the first class room despite calling twice to indicate of unavoidable delay at airport - upon check in , was offered an ancient flat (above first class rooms)- this was unacceptable - then after almost 2 hours of delay was given the old fashioned first cass room which was far from first class but due to late hour and sheer exhaustion - had no choice but to accept - no rebate, no discount offered, just a verbal apology which really means nothing in the hospitality industry!

for the $200 (the price you pay for a first class room!) its not worth it - breakfast was not that great , the tea was awful (shameful considering kenya we have such superb tea), no paper serviettes, no hot milk, no sugar on tables, juice was off and to wrap one pastery for safari was like asking them to prepare a wedding cake!
i counted 5 guests who missed breakfast as it closed promptly at 10.00 am - no flexible service - you cannot even get a knob of butter after 10.00 am!

the first class lounge adds little value apart from hot beverages which you finish rather fast in your room as they only give enough satchets for 2 mini-size cups!

so despite the attractive man-made waterfalls and beautiful gardens (btw they have labelled one of the trees wrongly) - i was v disappointed and will certainly not go back or recommend to my guests who expect first class to be first class!

2 of 5 stars Reviewed April 3, 2008

We have just returned from a great stay in Kenya. Due to the arrival time of our flight we had to stay the fisdt night in Nairobi before heading off on safari. There was no sign of the recent troubles there and we felt safe. The Hotel Fairview is gated for security - but I would point out that it is very close to Freedom Park, where rallies and demonstrations are held. My main gripe with the hotel was that it seems to be lacking good management. It could do so much better with it's old colonial atmosphere but it is too out of date these days to not provide no-smoking rooms. We had a double room which mercifully did not smell of smoke, but it was very cramped and old-fashioned and had no air-con. Our two girls did much better in terms of room size as they were upgraded to an executive room. This was much bigger and had a mosquito net around the beds - still no air-con. But it stank of cigar smoke from the previous occupant.
We arrived at about 10pm and were told that the bar was now closed and the only way to get any rereshment was room service. We ordered some drinks, which were brought to our room fairltyquickly - but they couldn't provide a bottle opener! ( luckily my daughter has flip-flops with a built in bottle opener in the sole!!)
Breakfast brought more disappointments. It was self-service. I had the poached eggs and found they were cold. I pointed out to the staff that the bain-marie was not working, they apologised and jiggled about with the plug which had come out - and just left the eggs to re-heat!! The mango juice was actually rancid. These sort of issues mean that I will not be returning there for my next visit to Nairobi and I would not currently be able to recommend this hotel.
